Since I come from the Eastern Shore of this state, I was surprised to hear a ghost story I was previously unaware of. The story takes place in a park in Salisbury. The person who told me the story is a 19-year-old sophomore at the University, and we spoke about it one evening after dinner. He believes it to be true, because one of his friend’s siblings has apparently experienced the ghost firsthand. I tape-recorded his narrative:
All houses are haunted; all persons are haunted; throngs of spirits follow us everywhere, we are never alone. Every county has they own haunted places some more known than others. I know this very personally because I live less than 100 yards from one of those haunted places, Marsh Road. I will take you on an adventure though Wisconsin’s past and present gulls and goblins that will sure give you a new look on Wisconsin. The haunted places in Wisconsin are worth learning about.
Hauntings are sometimes believed to be a contributing factor of people acting insane. The spirits could control what the person's mind thinks and hear and make them appear to be crazy. Haunting may make people appear to be crazy but this presence is actually there. It is real and could interact with you. Physical evidence, and others who believe could help prove a ghost is there. In “The Yellow Wallpaper,” by Charlotte Perkins Stetson, Jane, the narrator, becomes infatuated with her yellow wallpaper. Jane is being haunted because of the things she saw in the wallpaper, like the dark figure, which becomes a woman and the fact that her husband John and Jennie, the housemade are well aware of the mysterious factors of
When most people think of paranormal activity they instantly think of ghosts, spirits, or even demons. Paranormal activity is more than that. Paranormal is when something is beyond normal and activity is the state of being active. Some people like to say it’s their imagination, but me personally, I think it is much more than that. Paranormal is used to describe something unordinary that lack a scientific explanation (Cha Cha Inc., 2006). (McGuire, 2010) stated that supernatural or paranormal events which occur when people are not seeking them out can be very difficult and frightening. Most people wonder about the different ways paranormal activity can be explained. A few different examples of paranormal activity are ghosts, levitation, telegraphs, etc. Footsteps, abnormal sounds, shadows, and even moving objects are all signs of paranormal activity.
If you’re really into doing some ghost hunting or if ghostly spirits don’t bother you then right in the heart of Little Haiti in Miami, Florida you’ll find Villa Paul. This is a neo-Classical mansion built in 1920 with a special Cuban flair. The mansion has ten rooms, two baths, 18 ft. tall ceilings, hand-painted floor tiles and Tuscan columns. It was built with Cuban-exported yellow bricks and white stucco.
In The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson, there are a lot of various occurrences within the walls of Hill House. Dr. Montague, Eleanor, Theodora, and Luke are staying at the believably haunted house as a part of Dr. Montague’s experiment to see if there is scientific evidence behind paranormal phenomena. As a matter of fact, they end up being the targets of all the happenings in the house. I believe that everything going on in the house is peculiar, but when you look deeper, there is some logic behind it all.
Many people all over the world have asked themselves this question: “Are ghosts real?” To those who say yes, what exactly is a ghost, and where do they come from? A ghost is considered a spirit or apparition that does not or cannot “move on” or proceed to the afterlife (“Are Ghost Real or” 1) Understanding ghost and where they come from is very difficult because there is not solid evidence when it comes to ghosts and eyewitnesses. One of the causes is that there are so many cultures and religions that believe in different things about life after death (Thadani 1). Also, there is no a universal definition of what a ghost is, what it does, or what it can do (“Are Ghost Real? Science” 2). Due to the over increasing popularity of ghost among tv and movies, the subject is becoming more and more stereotypical. Another reason the existence of ghosts is such a well debated topic is because there are countless eyewitnesses claiming to have seen ghosts (“Are Ghost Real or” 1).
Ghosts have been around for many years and the root of the whole idea comes because it is “based on the ancient idea that a person's spirit exists separately from his or her body, and may continue to exist after that person dies” (“History of Ghost Stories”). Ghost stories have been told through centuries and because of this it is not known where the first spirit could have appeared or why, but one of the first actually recorded experience happened within the first century A.D. A man named Pliney recorded that he had seen a man and heard objects moving around and he could not explain what what happening (“History of Ghost Stories”). Even though the first supernatural experiences are not known, they created worldwide talk to present time about spirits and hauntings.
One quality of ghosts that makes them very difficult to evaluate is their form and behavior. Benjamin Radford writes in his article “Are Ghosts Real? - Evidence has not Materialized” “One difficulty in scientifically evaluating ghosts is that a surprisingly wide variety of phenomena are attributed to ghosts, from a door closing on its own, to missing keys, to a cold area in a hallway, to a vision of a dead relative” (N.p). Because so many different experiences are associated with the presence of spirits, it becomes more of a challenge to validate their legitimacy. Perhaps the door closing was just a coincidence, or that the cold area happened because an air vent blew cold air into that part of the hallway. Not everything needs to be attributed
Savannah is supposedly one of the most haunted cities in America, and later in the week on the same trip, we decided to go on one of Savannah's biggest tourist traps. A ghost tour. We walked around the city on a Wednesday night at ten PM for about two hours. We walked outside of buildings that may have had many deaths in and was supposed to be filled with paranormal activity, but we never went inside. We just got stories of people allegedly seeing ghosts through the window. It was terribly at the time but it was worth it to be
The Harlem Renaissance changed the overall demeanor of African Americans in Harlem and gave them the opportunity and hope they were lacking through the development of writing and arts. It opened the door for blacks to display certain capabilities that they never had the opportunity to witness. Furthermore, it really conveyed the movement of authors and expanded the idea of rights for blacks and their identity. It really gave life to African Americans and helped reform the overall meaning and form of life for them. “The White House” uses imagery and “I, Too” uses perspective to suggest that we should not let the way others see us derail our dreams.

In Turn of the Screw by Henry James, there is a question of whether the ghosts of Peter Quint and Miss Jessel are real. They seem to only appear to the governess and she is the only one who admits to seeing them. F. W. H. Myers recognized apparitions as "a manifestation of persistent personal energy, --or an indication that some kind of force is being exercised after death which is in some way connected to a person previously known on earth." (P. 141) This fits the story perfectly for the ghosts appear to be nothing, just a "manifestation." The governess swears that Miles and Flora see the ghosts too, but that they refuse to admit it. She says, "whatever I had seen, Miles and Flora saw more-- things terrible and unguessable and that sprang from dreadful passages of intercourse in the past." (P.53) They are scared or intimidated. Some of the places the governess appears show many parallels to the sightings of the ghosts as well. The governess sees Quint in the glass door and up on the tower, a place where Mrs. Grose notices the governess. And the governess sees Miss Jessel sitting at her desk. She recalls, "In the presence of what I saw I reeled back upon resistance. Seated at my own table in the clear noonday light I saw a person" (P. 59) These reflections of herself upon the ghosts portray an idea that she is a ghost or it is in her conscious and Bly is driving her mad.
