The Book Whistling Vivaldi by Claude M. Steele is a book about confronting and acknowledging stereotypes. As well as trying to find ways to curb stereotypes in today's society. In the first 3 chapters Steele discusses his experience with stereotyping as a young black man in Chicago. He speaks of his friends experiences from their youth. As well as discussing research he and his colleagues have conducted over his career. Trying to figure out what causes stereotype, how it affects individuals, what we can do to eliminate it, and does it affect everyone the same in all situations. Chapter 1 titled “At the root of identity” begins with Steele speaking of his experience as a young black child growing up in Chicago's Hyde Park. He recalls that as a young boy he could only go swimming in the community pool on Wednesdays. He speaks to how this racial segregation was all around him but he did not realize the true meaning of it. He was able to see that he was treated differently but did not really know or question why. In his recollection Staples refers to his time when he was ignorant to the fact that people viewed him differently as a black man. One part that stood out to me was when Staples said, “I'd been a fool. I’d been walking the streets grinning good evening to people who frightened to death of me” (Steele pg.6). This realization for Staples as i see it very much adds to the main point and idea of Whistling Vivaldi. It showed that when Staples did not realize he was being discriminated against he was happy and content just being himself, but once it came to his attention he had to make an effort to change himself and try to overcome the stereotype. It reinforces a theme throughout the first three chapters that when the stereotype is not know or present there is little effect on people, but as soon as it is out in the open it begins to affect people
In Whistling Vivaldi, in chapter 5 it talks about how a white student takes a class with the majority of the people in the class being black and two white people including him. The book talked about how we felt like he couldn't talk in the class, and he felt like he had to be conscious of what he said because he didn't want to make any racial comments that could offend the people in his class. This certain example, was very interesting to me in the aspect that in all of the classes I've been in I've been the majority, I have never known what's it's like to be the minority nor have I ever thought about the people that are in my class that are the minority, I never considered how they felt before reading this book. Imagine living in a world where people are put into a category simply because of their appearance, race, or religion. It limits a person’s chance of expressing individuality through categorization. Desmond Cole’s article, “The Skin I’m In” introduces the struggles faced by black people through racial stereotypes in Canada— a country known for its diversity. Cole reveals the experiences of black people who are stereotyped as dangerous; as a result, they are victimized with prejudice, discrimination, and injustice by society.
The transition of being a black man in a time just after slavery was a hard one. A black man had to prove himself at the same time had to come to terms with the fact that he would never amount to much in a white dominated country. Some young black men did actually make it but it was a long and bitter road. Most young men fell into the same trappings as the narrator’s brother. Times were hard and most young boys growing up in Harlem were swept off their feet by the onslaught of change. For American blacks in the middle of the twentieth century, racism is another of the dark forces of destruction and meaninglessness which must be endured. Beauty, joy, triumph, security, suffering, and sorrow are all creations of community, especially of family and family-like groups. They are temporary havens from the world''s trouble, and they are also the meanings of human life.
Claude M. Steele is the author of “ Whistling Vivaldi”, which mainly represents that the meaning of identity contingencies and stereotype threat, and how can these effect people’s ideas and behaviors. By writing this article, Steele tries to make people know exist of identity contingencies. Gina Crosley-Corcoran, who is a white woman suffered the poverty in her childhood. Through describing her miserable experiences in parallel construction to motivate readers sympathize her, moreover approving that she can as a powerful evidence for affirming the impact of identity contingencies. As Malcolm changes throughout the story, his wordhoard and usage of various terms changes as well as the structure of sentences. In Rizga’s essay, she explains about how two different students who have experienced stereotype by someone’s race. A student named Brianna, was once in the bathroom with five of her other black girl friend’s fixing their hair. While two Asian American girls came in and saw them, they ran out right away, thinking something bad might happened and get bullied. Another experience from a student in Rizga’s essay was a girl named Rebecca. She exclaims how she moved to St. Louis from China. She went to an all-African American school and was told by her parents to stay away from black students, to not trust them, and run away even though they were all really nice to her. In Dickerson’s essay, she says one thing that is similar to these two situations of the student’s in Rizga’s essay. The main character is completely alienated from the world around him. He is a black man living in a white world, a man who was born in the South but is now living in the North, and his only form of companionship is his dying wife, Laura, whom he is desperate to save. He is unable to work since he has no birth certificate—no official identity. Without a job he is unable to make his mark in the world, and if his wife dies, not only would he lose his lover but also any evidence that he ever existed. As the story progresses he loses his own awareness of his identity—“somehow he had forgotten his own name.” The author emphasizes the main character’s mistreatment in life by white society during a vivid recollection of an event in his childhood when he was chased by a train filled with “white people laughing as he ran screaming,” a hallucination which was triggered by his exploration of the “old scars” on his body. This connection between alienation and oppression highlight Ellison’s central idea.
The definition of a stereotype is the ”A generalization, usually exaggerated or oversimplified and often offensive, that is used to describe or distinguish a group” (Dictionary.com,2017). It is precisely this unjust generalization of others which Chimamanda Adichie addresses in her speech on Ted Talks. However, Adichie confronts this issue through the telling of stories and through mundane language, rather than through condemnation and convoluted language. Through these stories, Adichie effectively approaches and evaluates stereotyping and discrimination through the appeals to ethos and pathos, as well as her use of parallelism, and her tone.

In the short essay, “Black Men in Public Space” written by Brent Staples, discusses his own experiences on how he is stereotyped because he is an African American and looks intimidated in “public places” (Staples 225). Staples, an intelligent man that is a graduate student at University of Chicago. Due to his skin complexity, he is not treated fairly and always being discriminated against. On one of his usual nightly walks he encountered a white woman. She took a couple glances at him and soon began to walk faster and avoided him that night. He decided to change his appearance so others would not be frightened by his skin color. He changed the way he looked and walked. Staples dressed sophisticated to look more professional so no one would expect him to be a mugger. Whistling classical music was referred to the “cowbell that hikers wear when they know they are in bear country”(Staples 226). The cowbell is used to protect hikers from bears. But in Staples case, it was to not be stereotyped and show that he is harmless. The general purpose of Staples essay was to inform the readers that stereotypes could affect African Americans and any other races.
A main theme in this novel is the influence of family relationships in the quest for individual identity. Our family or lack thereof, as children, ultimately influences the way we feel as adults, about ourselves and about others. The effects on us mold our personalities and as a result influence our identities. This story shows us the efforts of struggling black families who transmit patterns and problems that have a negative impact on their family relationships. These patterns continue to go unresolved and are eventually inherited by their children who will also accept this way of life as this vicious circle continues.
