Whether Attending an All Girls School Benefits the Girls Attending or Not There is a debate as to whether attending an all girls school is
beneficial to the girls attending these single sex schools. As a
pupil at one such school I am in the position to express an opinion on
what I think are the main advantages of attending such a school.
As someone who enjoys sports I am glad I chose a girls school because
there is much more focus on girls sports, whereas in a mixed school
there is more focus generally on male sports such as rugby.
At a girls school I know that I would be able to focus on my work in
class more diligently because I would find myself less distracted by
the members of my class as they are of the same gender as me.
I chose a girls school because I feel as a boarder that it is more
understanding of girls problems that they may face in adolescence. The
school will have always dealt with teenage girls and therefore be more
knowledgeable in the pastoral care aspect of school life. As many
mixed schools have begun letting girls into the schools relatively
recently and as a result may lack the ability to care for girls with
the same degree of success.
I researched this topic. I entered the criteria ‘a girls school over a
mixed school’ and entered appropriate websites. I realised that for
girls, being in a mixed school has severe disadvantages. In contrast
to the advantages the opposite sex enjoy if they are in mixed school.

Sending a child to a gender based school, is a very big decision to make. The decision is so big, that looking at what research has to say about the topic could alter one’s decision to send their child to a gender based school. “Educators must apply different approaches in teaching make, and female students” (Gurian). As a young woman growing up in an urbanized setting and attending public schools all of my life, when the time came to start planning and searching for colleges, I searched for schools that I felt fit my persona, that I would be comfortable attending for some of the most integral years of my life. My search included schools such as Temple University, and Pennsylvania State University, higher education institutions that allowed me to challenge myself, but at the same time would put me in a setting where I would be with others just like myself, fitting into the standard American university fashion.

It seems that single-sex education perpetuates gender stereotypes and promotes gender bias among students (Taylor). Gender-separate education requires schools and teachers to create gender-oriented courses, facilities, and learning environment. As a result, sing-sex schools exacerbate sexist attitudes and “feelings of superiority toward women” (Guarisco). It is fair to argue that the best way to achieve gender equality is to promote rather than eliminate interaction among girls and boys. However, girls in the sex-mixed class receive less attention from teachers than boys, which may lead to gender bias. More precisely, boys always have disciplinary issues, such as interruption; teachers have to pay more attention to boys’ behaviors in order to proceed the lecture more smoothly. Girls may feel less important and supportive in male-dominated classes; boys may think that males are smarter and far superior than females. Single-sex schools can address both girls’ and boys’ issues of gender stereotypes directly and accordingly. Male students may be freer to engage in some activities they have not considered before in mixed schools. For example, boys feel pressure to follow some non-macho interests when girls stay around them; however, the all-boys schools eliminate their pressure toward gender stereotyping to pursue music, dance, and drawing. Single-sex schools would help boys explore and develop themselves. Also, girls in sex-separate schools show more confidence and power (Guarisco). They could receive full attention from teachers and express their opinions in science classes without worrying about the boys’ banter. They may realize that they are as important as boys. Hence, both girls and boys can be free from gender stereotypes and benefit from a same-sex learning
At the performing arts school, I would be surrounded by people that were the complete opposite of me and I would be subjecting myself to a high school experience nothing like the "golden days" my parents and siblings had always told me about. I would be the first out of the family to attend a charter high school and I would only be able to participate in one area of the arts. “In some rural areas there are only 67 girls for every 100 boys. Kindergarten classes in places where the problem is particularly bad have twenty-some boys and maybe three or four girls. Some primary schools have enough boys to fill five classes but only enough girls for two.” I don’t get why there is a preference for boys going to school because if girls get the education they can get jobs, but since almost all the boys go to school they get the jobs and make the money for the families. The most essential reason for me to choose Toronto is its progressive education systems. Students in Toronto Secondary School have a golden chance to develop comprehensively: the school board offers a depth and breadth of programs and supports to meet the unique learning needs and interests of an increasingly diverse population; the schools’ syllabus is elective so that students can choose subjects, that they want to be major in, to study.
