In the short story “Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?” by Joyce Carol Oates, many elements of fiction are used to convey subject of themes represented throughout the story, such as disguises. Throughout the story the use of characterization, detail, and allusions represents the presence evil in the modern world. Oates used these elements to capture evil that illustrates the theme that ‘Looks can be deceiving’. In this story characterization is used to capture the presence of evil in disguise. The majority of the imagery to capture this evil or to show a similarity to evil is used for the description of Arnold Friend’s appearance. The use of allusions conveys many different references such as fairy tales, mythology, biblical, and real life. The references contains many evil components of popular tales and real life stories. For example, the story of Pied Piper of Tuscon. He is also known as Charles Schmid, an American serial killer, who murdered three teenage girls. A lot of the characteristics that Schmid had, such as the boot stuffing, makeup, ladies man and charming correlated with Arthur Friend. Also the actions he did and what was going on when he murdered those girls, which was that someone was listening to the radio in the car and that Schmid had raped and killed those teenage girls. Oates took from this horrid and evil factual story and created a devil-like modern fictional character. Another example, is the mythological tale of satyr and nymphs. Nymphs were beautiful, young nubile maidens who love to dance and sing. Satyrs were very lusty creatures and known for raping nymphs. Arnold is being interpreted as a satyr who tries to coax then intimidates Connie out of her house.
