In Chapter 14, “What’s Motivating this Writer?” One key point is that the author can be writing based on an argument that he or she is responding to. They usually build arguments over issues that may be overlooked by their readers. Rather than having one argument, they have multiple and include the actual standpoint of the argument and also have their own response to it. Also, the reader should try to visualize what the author is arguing about so they can understand what they are retorting to or know what the argument is about.
Another key point, is to break the writing into sections, so it is easier to understand and grasp what the author is arguing about. It is for you to describe the text and be able to put it in your own words or summarize
The author turn to books in order to attract girl. After realizing at thirteen year old that he did not have the standard of the type of boys girls was seduced by. Strunk and White had a lot of good advice about how to make writing clear and concise. One good point made in the book was about dialogue. When there is dialogue in writing, it is extremely annoying not to know who is speaking. "In long dialogue passages containing no attributes, the reader may become lost and be compelled to go back and reread in order to puzzle the thing out," (Strunk and White, 76). When a person is trying to read an extensive piece, it can become such a hassle to have to look back a lot to see which character is saying what. Not only does it deter the reader, but it greatly damages the credibility of the author and the work that he or she produces.

Many people think that reading more can help them to think and develop before writing something. Others might think that they don’t need to read and or write that it can really help them to brainstorm things a lot quicker and to develop their own ideas immediately (right away). The author’s purpose of Stephen King’s essay, Reading to Write, is to understand the concepts, strategies and understandings of how to always read first and then start something. The importance of this essay is to understand and comprehend our reading and writing skills by brainstorming our ideas and thoughts a lot quicker. In other words, we must always try to read first before we can brainstorm some ideas and to think before we write something. There are many reasons why I chose Stephen King’s essay, Reading to Write, by many ways that reading can help you to comprehend, writing, can help you to evaluate and summarize things after reading a passage, if you read, it can help you to write things better and as you read, it can help you to think and evaluate of what to write about.
As Stephen King instructed in his book On Writing, “Murder your darlings” (King 197). This quote has the potential to be deemed as unusual advice, but when seen from the perspective of a writer, it could be very valuable in keeping one’s writing interesting or delivering the unexpected to the reader. Similar to this guidance, King offers many tips and tools to better one’s writing technique and also informs the reader of how his writing career began and thrived. As I reflect on the content found in On Writing, I have discovered that, through this book, I have learned of ways to become a better writer and grow through the lengthy writing process.
This course and writing these essays has drastically improved my writing capabilities. Before this course I could not write an enthymeme or effectively write an argumentative paper. Establishing a clear and strong enthymeme to a question at issues helps me organize my ideas within the body paragraphs and keeps me from becoming repetitive. I understand now that addressing a counter argument strengthens my paper and helps tell the reader that you know your topic and have strong reasons. I look forward to using the writing skills I learned in this class towards future writing opportunities either with my studies or outside of school. I will continue to use enthymemes to effectively state my claim and reason and to strengthen my argument.
In chapter four of J. D. Salinger’s The Catcher in the Rye, Holden is sitting in the bathroom with Stradlater as he shaves, when he finds out that Stradlater is going out on a date with Jane Gallagher. From the conversation between the two, it is obvious that he is not happy that Stradlater is going out with her. We can tell that Holden has a strong connection with Jane or at least knows her well enough to worry about her. He tells Stradlater that her parents are divorced and that her mother has remarried. Holden also mentions that she had a rough childhood: “…And run around the goddam house, naked. With Jane around, and all. …She had a lousy childhood. I'm not kidding” (Salinger 32). I wrote notes on the margins for many of the stereotypes that during the time it was natural for them to establish. The “natural law” during the time gave all men the right to their rights; however, non-Caucasians were excluded from the law. Society created the image that women were meant to be housewives and were suppose to provide care for their children 24 hours a day, but during the present day many women work while their husbands stay home as the care taker. To become a good writer, you must familiarize yourself with a variety of writings by reading. Reading is not just glancing at words, line after line. Rather, it is comprehending, understanding, reflecting on, and summarizing what you just read. This occurs when you actively become immersed in the text and you interact with it. You do not necessarily have to agree with the author, but you must understand what is going on and reflect on every passage. In addition, you do not have to see the intended purpose of your piece of text from the author’s point of view. You may oppose his or her opinion and look at
