Mental health is affected by many variables. Genetics, major life events, and day to day interactions all play small roles in the way a person thinks, feels, and sees the world. With that being said, a healthy or unhealthy mental state does not start later in life. It starts with the creation of a person. Genetics play factors in what could be the state of our mental health, with influences of day to day living. Scientists are doing studies to indicate genes, and brain structure for changes or abnormalities before the person shows signs on some of the major mental illnesses like Alzheimer’s and schizophrenia. Some mental illnesses have specific genes that are present. Some of them change over time or at a certain point in time. Scientists
are studying these genes to see if and at what point they start to change. With the information they can make an outline that helps determines a persons chances for specific mental disorders later on down the road. It is pointed out that a child with schizophrenia develops differently than a child who does not have schizophrenia. A child who shows symptoms of schizophrenia or has an episode is treated, but the goal is to catch possibilities of schizophrenia before they show and take ahold of a child. For scientist to help the schizophrenic community, they first have to do research to find out where schizophrenia sets in and takes place. Unfortunately even with specific gene indicators, and brain scans, at risk genes all have a different timeline. In one person the risky genes changed early, another person one changed late, and it’s possible another person’s gene never changed. With genes that have a mind of their own, there needs to be more research on what other circumstances might be aiding in the development of schizophrenia. Once again the topic comes back to early brain development. Prenatal and postnatal because the brain starts to develop before the child is born, and factors after birth play a role in brain development. Studies will be done on developmental milestones and certain skills like fine motor and memory. The goal is to find new clues to help future intervention with mental diseases and disorders. Hopefully these studies will come up with some good clues so children will not have to suffer like those before them. In the end, mental illnesses are hard to narrow down because of how many variables play into them. Variables like genetics and environment are hard to measure because everyone is different. Moving forward and looking at the first stages of life when the brain starts to develop are great places to start. I never took into consideration that the brain starts to develop before the child is born, and circumstances in prenatal care could affect mental health. This was a very interesting read and I am glad I chose a topic with children because they are my passion.
Insanity is a medically diagnosed disease that shows that a person is incapable of acknowledging what is right from what is wrong. There are many contributing factors that may lead a person to become insane. Some of these factors include inherited traits, environmental exposures before birth, negative life experiences, and brain chemistry.Inherited traits can lead to insanity because genes that cause such disorders can be passed down amongst relatives and family members. Environmental exposures before birth refers to an unborn child being exposed to viruses, bacteria or even toxins inside the womb, that can be linked to one’s mental illness. Negative life experiences such as the loss of a loved one, experiencing financial problems and being involved in highly stressful situations can play a big role in triggering the mental illnesses or mental breakdowns. Changes in the efficiency of one’s neurotransmitters, whether sensory receptors obtain signals correctly and fluctuations in hormo...
Mental illness plagues one out of four American citizens. Mental illness varies greatly from person to person. The spectrum of mental illness includes many illnesses including, depression and anxiety as well as some more serious illnesses such as Down syndrome. All mental illness plays a role in how this person is going to function in society. These individuals have unique needs and individual strengths that need evaluated for proper care.
Mental health is being aware, accepting yourself, and striking a balance in all aspects of your life like social, spiritual, physical, economical, and mental (Association, 2001). Mental health can be described as our positive interactions with the context and events in our life, and having the ability to cope with life’s stressors. Mental health problems can begin at anytime during your life (CAMH, 2010). In fact anything can make it difficult for an individual’s ability to interact effectively, and may lead into a mental health problem (Association, 2001).
Mental illness can be a mixture of different factors. You can get mental illness through genetics meaning that it is passed down within the family. That can only happen if the mental illness is heredity. Another factor of mental illness is psychological trauma. Psychological trauma like abuse, or loss can cause some mental illnesses. When mental illness is untreated it makes it difficult for the person to function in society and deal with everyday life. The different types of mental illnesses range from anxiety disorders to personality disorders. Other mental illnesses are mood disorders, eating disorders, psychotic disorders, and impulse control and addiction disorders. An example psychotic disorder schizophrenia. Examples of eating disorders are bulimia and anorexia. According to MedicineNet.com “Most mental illnesses are caused by a combination of factors and cannot be prevented”. Mental illness is something that should not be avoided. The biggest issue when it comes to mental illness that is noticeable is when someone who has a mental il...
Many people believe that mental illness affects certain ages, religions, races, genders, or income levels more than others do but that is not the case ("NAMI: National Alliance on Mental Illness | Mental Illnesses"). There are many forms of mental illnesses that affect people, such as depression, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, panic disorder, post traumatic stress disorder, and borderline personality disorder. These illnesses come from a variety of different factors and conclude in ...
The question to ask is, what is a disorder? First of a disorder is “a disruption of normal physical or mental functions; a disease or abnormal conditions” according to Google. A disorder affects a person’s mental and physical health. “The concept of mental disorder (like many other concepts in medicine and science) lacks a consistent operational definition that covers all situations” (DSM IV). A disorder appears when a person is distressed or a reaction that is not expected. Mental disorders can be inherited from family members who have the traits for specific disorders. To be diagnosed with a disorder, a mental health professional of either mental or behavioral. In studies of mental illness, neurotransmitters in the brain have been an idea that could link scientists to why mental illnesses exist. Scientists believe that if certain chemicals in the brain are not balanced it can cause parts of the brain to shut down or the connection to the parts of the brain are not working properly, it can cause detrimental harm to the host and can cause certain illnesses to occur. Some examples of a mental illness would be; depression, obsessive compulsion disorder, autism, alzheimer's, and
Mental illness is a condition that affects a person’s way of thinking, behaving, feeling, or mood. The effect is often in a negative way, prohibiting positive interactions and relations with other people; mental illness can even prohibit normal functioning in society. The onset of a mental disorder is normally not due to a single event. It is generally brought on by a culmination of factors in one’s life, whether it is a stressful school, work, personal situation, or a combination thereof, that may not be going as smoothly as one planned or wished. It can also be brought on due to a person’s environment (poor, abusive, crime-ridden), lifestyle (drugs or alcohol), or a predisposition to the illness - it’s in the person’s genetic make-up. There is a stigma in society associated with mental health problems that somehow needs to be overcome. Once it is overcome, it will be easier to heal the patients because people would be more willing to admit that they have a problem and have it
Although physical health is not directly effected by the status of a child’s mental state, children with mental health problems are more prone to having a chronic health condition, which will follow them into adulthood. Out of all the children with a mental illness forty percent of them have two or more mental illnesses. A child with a mental illness has a greater chance of developing even more mental illnesses as an adult. An adult with one or more mental disorders are less likely to work or participate in the community in a positive light (cdc.gov). The abundant number of children who had trouble in school, getting along with their peers, and shying away from their family because of a mental illness are not likely to be attending further schooling or working in their adulthood. Since these adults do very little there a greater chance that they turn to substance abuse (NHPF.ORG). According to the National Bureau of Economic Research, the population of people with mental illnesses consumes thirty-eight percent of alcohol and forty-four percent of cocaine (dual diagnosis).
Mental health is just as important as physical health in a person’s life. Mental health is critical to a person’s well-being, their ability to live a productive life and to keep a healthy family and interpersonal relationships. Mental health does not just affect the mind it also affects people’s physical health. Some physical health diseases can cause a mental health disorder and vice versa. Mental health disorders are associated with the occurrence, development, and outcome of some of the today’s most chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, and cancer. When people go untreated from a mental health disorder are at a higher risk for many unhealthy behaviors such as alcohol and drug use, violent behavior, and suicide.
Many researchers have concluded that BPD can be hereditary, and the influences of biology and environmental practices can contribute to the development and intensity of symptoms of this disorder (Hebblethwaite, Caroline). Meaning, an individual can be born with distinctive personality or temperamental traits due to the way their brain is “wired,” and these traits or characteristics are further molded by the persons environment and cultural experiences and possibly by family and friends. According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) there are “no specific gene has been shown to directly cause BPD” but a number of different genes and some hormones have been identified to strengthen the development of BPD, “a number of hormones (including oxytocin) and signaling molecules within the brain (e.g., neurotransmitters including serotonin) have been shown to potentially play a role in BPD”. They also state that MRI testing has concluded that brain functionality is often different in people with BPD, therefore suggesting that there is a neurological aspect playing a role. Researchers have found differences in certain areas of the brain that might explain impulsive behavior, emotional instability and the way people perceive events. As well, twin and family history studies have shown a genetic influence, with higher rates of BPD and/or other related mental health disorders among close family members.
Mental illness refers to a wide range of mental health conditions and or disorders that affect your mood, thinking and behavior. Depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, eating disorders
In general, mental health has been defined as multifaceted based on six dimensions behavioral, cognitive, socio-political, effective, spiritual and psychological. In addition, mental health comprise of spiritual and emotional resilience that help an individual to continue surviving after sadness, disappointments and pains have occurred(Thomas, 2016). However, mental illness in refers to a mental health problem that involves the changes in
Mental illness has been around since as early as 5000 BCE(Before Common Era) and the treatment of mental illness has been around just as long. There has always been an interest of what happens when a person's mind turns against them, and just what can be done, if anything to help or reverse this condition.
Mental illness have been seen and treated as far back as 5000 B.C. In the beginning little was known about the actual cause of the illness, many in these ancient times believed that it was due to possession of demons. As civilization advanced knowledge of mental illness little by little was gained. Although the knowledge was no where as advanced has we have today, they believed that it was due to imbalances of blood, phlegm, bile and black bile. Even Today, people are still debating about mental illness and how they work and why. Mental illness is a broad term, mental illness refers to any mental health problems one may experience in their lifetime. “One in 25 Americans lived with a serious mental illness, such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder,
In some cases the causes of mental illness primarily found inside the individual. Some of them have been associated with an abnormal balance of neurotransmitters in the brain. If they are out of balance the communication between nerve cell in the brain disrupted (Royal Australian and New Zealand College of psychiatrist, 2005). Hence, leading to symptoms of mental illness like depression, schizophrenia. On the other hand, genetics also plays a significant role to acquire mental disorder, which is passed...
