The Revolutionary War was a war fought by the Patriots and would not have been a victory for the Americans if it weren’t for the important groups of people who played major roles. The women, African-Americans, and the foreigners all played important roles in the fight for independence against Great Britain. Before the Revolutionary War started there was the French and Indian War, which was a costly battle for the Ohio Valley. Following the war, Britain needed money to pay for the costs which caused them to tax colonists without their consent or representation. The American Revolution (1775-1783) was a war between England and the colonies which were settled earlier by the English. There were many factors and events that led to the American Revolution. The Revolution was mainly an economic rebellion that was fueled by taxation without representation following the French and Indian War. The English Parliament was more often than not considered cruel and unfair by the colonists. With conflicts over trade, taxes and government representation, the colonies were at a starting line of a revolution that would later transform into the basis of the United States of America.

The American Revolution: the war for our independence. This revolution opened the door to our liberty, freedom, and basically what America is now. Most Americans have heard the stories of famous battles, important people (George Washington for instance), and everything in between. However, this was only for our side of the American Revolution and a small fraction of people have been told of Britain’s campaign of the revolution. The only thing people have been told was the Britain lost the war. What of Britain’s triumphs, strategies, and everything that happened in the span of a few years? Not many people know it, but the British struck a major blow against the Patriots in the last few years of the war. Even though the United States won the American Revolution, Britain struck a major blow against the colonists when the British successfully and brutally took the town of Charleston, South Carolina.
The war began when immigrants from England decided they wanted to be independent colonies and no longer under the king of England’s rule. Most of the earlier fighting took place on American soil. In 1778, France signed an alliance with the new nation of America supporting their fight for independence. Once France signed allegiance with the new nation, it turned more into world war instead of just America and England. Now England was fighting the American colonies in America, and France, Spain, and the Netherlands on the home front. Another reason the war was started, was because of taxes put in place by the king, and enforced by English soldiers in the colonies. Most Americans were against getting taxed by the king so some of the patriots decided to ruin a shipment of tea, which is known as the Boston tea party. On July 2, 1776, continental congress formerly declared independence (Henretta, 2012). The war was not yet over though until 1783 when the treaty of Paris got signed and officially ended the war. Throughout American history, African Americans have had to decide whether they belonged in the United States or if they should go elsewhere. Slavery no doubtfully had a great impact upon their decisions. However, despite their troubles African Americans made a grand contribution and a great impact on both armed forces of the Colonies and British. "The American Negro was a participant as well as a symbol."; (Quarles 7) African Americans were active on and off the battlefield, they personified the goal freedom, the reason for the war being fought by the Colonies and British. The African Americans were stuck in the middle of a war between white people. Their loyalty was not to one side or another, but to a principle, the principle of liberty. Benjamin Quarles' book, The Negro in the American Revolution, is very detailed in explaining the importance of the African American in the pre America days, he shows the steps African Americans took in order to insure better lives for generations to come.
The American Revolution was so much more than just a war, or a time in history. It was a time where America grew, and as the name suggests, revolutionized their way of thinking and governing. It was a time for some great thinkers to get their ideas out there, and these ideas helped shape America into what it is today. These revolutionary thinkers shared their ideas publicly, and that gave the people ways to revolutionize their thoughts as well. They flipped what they knew about government upside down.
The American revolution started when The King of Britain lost an immense amount of money. He bought high priced equipment and supplies for the army that basically costed an arm and a leg. Which led him to decide they would regain their money by taxing the colonist. His poor decisions of taxing the people without their agreement outraged them and sent them into a state of revolt.

These events were backed and played through by the use of mobs especially like men of the Sons of Liberty. In the end, these men weren’t just “a rabble of boys”, “disorderly sailors”, or “miscreants” nor just a motley crew who was purely destructive and mindless. Rather they were men who acted for the betterment and survival of a people; patriots. These mobs help drive the resistance of the British from idea to movement toward greater change. In other words, these men steered America toward resistance and finally toward revolution.
In conclusion, the American Revolution was very revolutionary. It was a huge milestone in American history. The war not only gave America their own independence from the most powerful country in the world, it gave the American government the basis of how it runs today and brought about many social and political changes. Although many historians see the war as a change of power from one greedy power to another, Americans wouldn’t have a democracy and citizens wouldn’t have the rights they have.
