For students, summer can be a time of chaos, because after the school year ends, all daily routines crash and burn. It can feel like crazy and the wish to go back to school and to a routine slowly but surely builds up. Instead of waking up every day at the same time, eating breakfast, and getting on the school bus, kids have plenty of time to sleep and do whatever they please without the factor of time coming into play. During the school day, kids have to learn and participate in a variety of activities, but during summer, the only chance they get to see their school friends comes when they attend some kind of summer camp, whether it be daycare, band camp or STEM camp. Without the normal social interaction children, both young and older are used too, they can pull away from people because they get stuck with their relatives, opposed to people their own age. A student at Ste. Genevieve High School even expressed how she needs the summer break to unwind and not have to care about studying for a class when school would return to session. Another reason students may oppose this change is due to the fact High School students may hold summer jobs to earn some spending money. In certain instances, the year-round calendar may prevent students from holding these jobs or holding them for extended periods of time. One more reason students may disapprove of year-round education is because of extracurricular activities, and how they will be changed or shifted. New teachers can be affected in many ways. Unlike teachers who work in traditional school districts, they do not have the long summer to prepare and acquaint themselves for the forthcoming school year. The summer vacation students on a traditional schedule receive could be very beneficial since summer gives time for the students to attend camps or other activities that would allow them to learn. The camp may not be like the learning in school, but students would be able to get a different style of education while having fun. Summer is a time where people have gatherings, goof around, take vacations and spend time with their family. Many students are used to having two week winter break, one week spring break, and three months of summer break. Changing this traditional format could lead to negative effects for many students, educators,and families. A balanced school year would not have enough benefits to change schedule.
The summertime is when kids play outside and do whatever they want. Some kids even go to day care or their friends’ house to do something different, “Many children go to summer camps where they learn many of important skills not covered in school” (Cooper 3). Doing work in the summer that does not interest them will make kids despise summer. It also will not let the kids do want they want to do in peace, because they will worry about the huge assignment they still have to finish, “…the backbreaking obligation to read Charles Dickens blighted June, ravaged July obliterated August” (Queenan,1). Some might argue that the long summer will make the children forget what they learned, but if the students cannot relearn what they already knew in a month or less, that means that they are not being taught correctly. In general, summer reading makes a students' summer into more school time, which is not helpful to them.
Back in the olden days, schools were originally put on a schedule in which students would spend the majority of the year in school, and 2-3 months off for summer break. The purpose of this was so that children could be home for the summer to help their parents run family farms. Today, due to progressive industrialization of farming, modernized farming equipment, and decrease in family farms, the need for children to be home during the summer to help run family farms is minute if not obsolete; because of this many schools across the United States have transitioned to year-round schooling (“Summer”). Contrary to belief, year round schooling does not usually mean more school days. Currently most year-round schools adhere to the 180 day school year. Margot was sent from Earth to Venus at the age of four. Margot remembers the sun, and for that she is constantly bullied and harassed, since the other school children don’t remember the sun like she does, because they were just two years old. “All Summer in a Day” has some very good themes, like jealousy, regret, and bullying. In Kelly Link 's short story, The Summer People, the overall theme is that of debt, relationships and wealth. The story is about Fran, a teenage girl who lives in rural North Carolina. Her father, who comes in and out of her life, has gone away to Florida to find God. The mother abandoned them and left Fran in charge of the summer people. The short story starts out with Fran having the flu and now is taking care of herself. She decides to go to school, but later realizes that she can’t do it. She convinces an old friend, Ophelia to drive her home. Fran sends Ophelia to the summer people to get her medicine. Fran convinces Ophelia to sleep in the room. Fran finally feels free because she decides to make her escape. In her short story, The Summer People, Kelly Link helps Fran escape the Summer People House, just like her mother, via her renewed friendship with Ophelia.
Shortly, we became more industrialized and had more advanced technology which made the summer vacation that was so crucial to the survival of the family now purposeless. With these long summer breaks, it can affect a child’s learning in so many ways. Us kids go through a lot during summer we focus on many things like work, finding extra curricular activities to do during the summer and trying to help our parents around the house. In her essay “School’s Out for Summer”, she states how if some parents can’t schedule these activities they set their children in front of a T.V. which shows that us kids don’t like to go outside during the summer when school’s out. Her purpose for writing this was to show us how our parents have to deal with us the whole summer when school’s out and we don’t want to do anything because we want to sit in the house and do nothing all summer long which can lead us to forget everything we wanted to do over the summer when we go back to school. The story of Summer, by David Updike, is set during that idyllic time in life when responsibility is the last word on anyone's mind. And yet, as with all human affairs, responsibility is an ever-present and ever-necessary aspect to life. What happens when the protagonist, Homer, loses his awareness of a certain personal responsibility to maintain self-control? Homer's actions increasingly make him act foolishly, internally and externally. Also, how does Homer return to a sense of sanity and responsibility? To a degree, I would say that he does.
Most kids are influenced by what their parents do and how they treat them. In “The Veldt” by Ray Bradbury, the kids’ parents want them to be safe and have a good childhood. In “All Summer In a Day” by Ray Bradbury, the kids want to see the sun very desperately and they would do anything to see it because they have been waiting for a very long time. In both books they use dialogue to show and how the characters acted because they wanted something very badly. It also shows that desperately wanting something can change your life and other people’s lives for the worse or the better.
