Recommended: The concept of power
Mackenzie Coe Greer FYS Analysis #2 Due: 13 September 2017 What Power Means and How To Be Powerful Power is what dictates our “free will”. Power is the ability to pertain a specific trait; more specifically the ability to have influence. Power is a force that guides people through their everyday lives. You could say that power is something that no one truly has but everyone strives for. The pursuit of power is how a majority of Americans spend their time, they weave their lives through corporate ladders and education pathways to try to achieve this fake sense of identity. Power affects how people view their worth, in general the pursuit of power plays a huge role in humanity. In the eyes of all who are affected by it power is a term to describe
Power. It is defined as the capacity or ability to direct or influence the behavior of others or the course of events. Throughout time, certain individuals have acquired power in their society as a way to govern and keep order among their community. Power is not a new concept; it was used in the past by many emperors, kings, and queens, and is still being used by presidents, prime ministers, and dictators. Although, it has been used to further progress societies into what the world is like today, not all power has been used for the best of mankind. But what goes awry to make power turn corrupt? In William Shakespeare's Hamlet, it is illustrated how power can turn corrupt, when authoritative figures, who possess power, abuse it for their personal gain, rather than for the common good of the society.
Power has been defined as the psychological relations over another to get them to do what you want them to do. We are exposed to forms of power from the time of birth. Our parents exercise power over us to behave in a way they deem appropriate. In school, teachers use their power to help us learn. When we enter the work world the power of our boss motivates us to perform and desire to move up the corporate ladder so that we too can intimidate someone with power one day. In Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness Kurtz had a power over the jungle and its people that was inexplicable.
Power allows people to do anything they want. They can use it in different ways, they can tell people to obey them, they can use it to hurt someone they hate, and even rob. They can also use it in a positive way, they can help people and do a lot of good things with it.
A power is the augmentation between crucial organization also, their objective. This is an outcome of a movement that affiliation gets their looked for errands and targets and the organization is accountable for people and resources in a unit as demonstrated by rules or qualities that have starting now been set while the power set a going to the people in get-together.
Power is having control and choosing to use it to reach your goals. Some leaders have had this, and been incredibly effective, others have chosen not to use their control, and been less effective. Oppressive, selfish leaders are considered to have more power than accepting leaders that cared for the people, rather than re-election and the opinions of fellow members of the aristocracy. Power is something which leaders seek to abuse, but citizens also use, and constantly abuse to achieve.
Speaking of power becomes difficult because there is the tendency to still create a duality in which power becomes the a negative force in a dualism of good versus evil. It is not that power is moral, but rather that it is prevalent—so much so, that there is no escaping it. This exposition, therefore, is a mere statement of where power lies (which often is in the hands of the state), but power will continue to exist, whether it remains with the state or not, power could be compared with the law of conservation of energy because power like energy, is never destroyed but rather continually transferred in an infinite loop in which a “binary…of the powerless and the powerful…struggles to gain more power as mapped out by movement from the former to the latter, resulting in a simple inversion of the previous formation.” Without any sort of recogniti...
“The ability or right to control people or things.” Merriam-Webster’s definition of power is in the top one percent of over 470,000 words that are looked up in their dictionary. Power is a highly pursued word, because it is a difficult concept to understand. The definition implies that to have power is to have a right. That isn’t the part of the elucidation that often stumps people, the question people really want the answer to, is “what gives someone that right?” The amount of power and money someone has, dictates the level of humanity they are treated with.
Power was always perceived as a gauge by nations’ military might and ability to impose its will on others; however since taking this course, the perception has changed. There are multiple definitions of power. Power can be used to influence other nations to meet the host nation’s intent. Power can be interpreted through economic influence or old fashion brute force among many things. In essence, power is the means in which influence is bestowed unto nations, or in general in order to maintain order or get what is needed.
Power is something seen throughout all aspects of life. Every culture, every religion, every area, has an idea of what power is. Tibetan monks may believe that power relates to inner spirituality and oneness with your environment while warring tribes in Africa may argue that power is in whoever is physically strong. The broadness of power allows it to be interpreted as the viewer sees fit.
The concept of power is present within various realms of all organizations. Power, however, is not something that should necessarily be looked at negatively. There are justifiable types of power that may be important to criminal justice organizations. The main role of power in criminal justice administration should be to gain compliance from subordinates of all types, and turn that power over time into acceptable forms of authority (Stojkovic et al., 2008). It is for this reason that power is an important attribute in criminal justice agencies.
Power is authority and strength, which is any form of motive force or energy, ability to act, or control. When too much power is given, a dictatorship government can form, in which all decisions are made by one authority. In the book Animal Farm, by George Orwell the author portrays how “Power tends to corrupt and absolute power corrupts absolutely” (Lord Acton).
Power is the ability to obtain, retain, and motivate people and to organize informational and material resources to accomplish a task( Leadership, n.d). Power is central to the leadership process in the development of a manager’s self-confidence and willingness to support staff members ( Schmidt & Wilkinson, 1990). The desire for power is universal. From this vantage point, power should be accepted as a natural part of any individual organization. Power is not evenly distributed among individuals or groups, but every individual has some degree of power.
The term power has a variety of definitions. According to the American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language, the first definition of power refers to “the ability or capacity to act or do something effectively”, also include “a capacity, faculty, or aptitude,” (“power. (n.d.)
Attempts to define power have been traditionalistic, contentious and mundane despite the concept’s widespread use. Two salient features were presented for the controversial assumptions in defining power: power as domination and power as empowerment. In seeking to comprehensively reconcile the “contestedness” about power, Steven Lukes (2005) observes that how we conceive of power makes a difference to how we think and act in general especially in social contexts. The views of power can be a personal process where the interviews and the focus group served as helping the participants grapple with the controversy and discomfort surrounding the concept.
