“ To succeed in life, you need two things: ignorance and confidence,” Mark Twain. DO ANDROIDS DREAM OF ELECTRIC SHEEP is a book written by Philip K. Dick; the main character of the book is Rick Deckard who is a bounty hunter in a devastated world by the nuclear war. Humans are bribed with an android, who are like their personal slaves, to move from Earth to Mars. In this world, mercerism is everything, humans care for animals to prevent the mass extinction of several endangered species. However, the androids living in mars that have escaped and fled back to Earth, are responsibilities of Deckard to retire as his boss, Dave Holden, was brutally injured when retiring one of the escaped androids called Polokov. unfortunately it is an electric one, in hopes of getting a real animal, he takes the advantage as well as challenge of retiring six powerful androids, which gives him a good sum of money to buy a real animal as retiring each android gives him a bonus of one thousand dollars. Since Rick Deckard is a very successful and determined bounty hunter, he is tactful, hardworking, and a double crosser. Because Rick Deckard retired all of the androids with his tricks within 24 hours, he is a very smart/ tactful bounty hunter. For example, when Rick went to the Rachael’s Association to examine the Nexus 6 type androids, he gets a sight of an owl, which was very uncommon to find, Rachel tells Rick that those are real owls and how they mated with other owls, “ She indicated the owl dozing on its perch; it had briefly opened both eyes, yellow slits which healed over as the owl settled back down to resume its slumber. Its chest rose conspicuously and fell, as if the owl, in its hypnotic state, had sighed,” (Dick 17) . Rachel Rosen agrees to take the voigt- kampff test, however, Rick always felt suspicious regarding the owl, therefore, he was noticing each and every word that came out of Rachel's mouth. She was not referring the owl in a gendered manner, instead of referring the owl as a he/ she, Rachel was referring the owl as “it.” With this in mind, on page 24 Rick asks Rachel how his briefcase is and leaves a statement on how it is, "One hundred percent genuine human baby hide," (Dick 24). Rachel’s reaction was not typical and was behindhand; Rick confirms that Rachel is an android, and is still suspicious about the owl. Before leaving he asks “is this owl genuine? ” and gets the answer that he was waiting for, the head of the Rosen association, Eldon Rosen confirms that it’s artificial. The second example is when Rick captures Luba Luft with the help of Phil Resch, and buys a picasso art for Luba to butter and lure her on taking the Voigt- Kampff test again; Resch asks him over and over if he really wanted to spend money on an unknown stranger android, however, Deckard agrees and pays fully for the art Luba wanted. Due to these factors, Rick plays a very tactful game using his smartness to win the game and get what he wants. Rick takes his job very seriously, and tries to complete all of the responsibilities and challenges that arrives at his doors, these qualities make him a very hard working bounty hunter.
An example was when Rick got to know that his boss was injured, and somebody needed to take that post, in order to complete the mission. Rick gets out of his comfort zone and takes the initiation to get that responsibility. Not only that, he works very hard to retire each and every single android. Even though he says that he won't be taking anyone's help, he eventually finds a partner called Phil Resch, and they become a team; he also partners with Rachel, who in time, turns back on him. By the time he retired 3 andy's, Polokov, Luba, and Garland, he was super tired and lethargic; on page 163 he gets an order to find the other three leftover Andy’s by Inspector Bryant. With this order, he calls Rachel for help, and with his dedication and determination, he finds the 3 other andy’s and retires them. This shows how serious Deckard was about his job. He was also trying to fill his responsibility as a husband, even though he didn’t have a good relation with his wife, on page 157 and 158 he says how he tried his best and worked really hard by retiring those androids to get a real animal for his family. Hence, these traits make Deckard a very hardworking and responsible …show more content…
character. Even though Rick was responsible, hardworking, and a smart character, he had a negative side to his personality too, he was a double crossed human also known as a cheater. Rick was never loyal to his wife Iran; sadly, Iran and Rick’s thoughts didn’t get along together, while Rick wanted to be happy, Iran chose to be depressed and sad. Due to this clash, it triggered Rick and made his relation with his wife worse; he also felt like she was never there for him. For example, when Resch retired Garland, Rick was completely fine with it, but when he saw how Resch killed Luba, he had this empathy towards he and showed how he cared for her, "The way you killed Garland and then the way you killed Luba. You don't kill the way I do; you don't try to—Hell," he said. "I know what it is. You like to kill. All you need is a pretext. If you had a pretext, you'd kill me." (Dick 127). Not only that when Rick met Luba for the first time, on page number 97 he didn’t see her as an android and thought she “seemed generally alive.” He also talks about how the world could have used a beautiful voice like Luba’s, but doesn’t talk about how a police officer like Garland could have helped saved the world; Resch also teaches Deckard on how they should sleep with the android and retire them. Another example is Rachel Rosen, Rick always found Rosen really attractive and admired her, he even calls her to ask her if she wanted to help her retire the last 3 andy’s, she refuses, but he entices her and tells her that he will be booking a hotel room so they could spend ‘quality time’ together. After she arrives, he checks her out, kisses her, even though he had a wife, and sleeps with her. The third example is on page 131 when Rick suspected himself and took the Voight- Kampff test himself to identify him, and gets to a realization that he always had more empathy toward female androids compared to men, “I’m capable of feeling empathy for at least specific certain androids. For Luba Luft, as an example, he said to himself,” (Dick 132). Consequently, these factors make Rick a double crossed human and husband. Personality is a huge deal in our lives; each person's personality describes whom they really are and how their lives are.
Likewise, Ricks traits were a big deal in his life, it defines who he is. His tactfulness and smartness led his colleagues believe in him and give him that post of job. His hard working character payed off as he got to buy a real animal, not a puy little one, but a big one, he got to buy a goat for him and Iran. With both of the traits combined, he gained respect as well as a lot more confidence and experience. His double crossed personality gave him a lot of realization about life, he trusted Rachel a lot, but who knew she would throw his goat off the roof and backstab him. His journey and traits that he had throughout the book changed him completely, he went from a self - centered guy to a totally different one. Rick believes that he has merged with Mercer; in the first section of the book, he talks about how electric lives don't matter, but at the end he admits that, “electric things have their lives,
too.”
This is probably due to his all-around personality. I really enjoyed when Lincoln(28-year-old man) went into the break room and Doris(60-year-old lady) was restocking the vending machines. Lincoln offered her some of his mom’s favourite food when he saw her eating a turkey sandwich. This spiraled into a relationship which would be worth it at the end of the book. Not only do I think this character isn’t flawed but every character was extremely well thought out. The personalities stayed realistic and there wasn’t an action that distracted me from reading. If I could change something about Lincoln it would be courageous, to not procrastinate. I’m saying this because Lincoln almost lost the Beth and Doris had to come and save his little behind. He keeps saying I’m going to talk to her, I’m going to talk to her but he never did and instead wrote a note when he quit. Doris came in like the knight in shining armour, bragged about Lincoln to Beth. One character that reminded me of someone I knew was Dean. If Alan was to grow up Dean’s personality would be extremely similar to Alan’s. I say this because of how is extremely outgoing, a lady’s man, then finally settles down with one lady after being through god knows how many
“Technological progress has merely provided us with more efficient means for going backwards” (“Brainy Quotes” 1). While this epitomizes modern time, it also represents M.T. Anderson’s Feed and Pixar’s Wall-E. Feed is a book about a dystopian society influenced by a device, called “feed”, implanted in the brains of the citizens. The author describes a group of regular teenagers that venture to the moon for a spring break vacation of partying and going “in mal”. The main character, Titus, falls for a girl named Violet who is not like the other stereotypical teens in this book. Violet received the feed when she was much older and she is homeschooled so her brain is more developed. Together, they go on outrageous adventures until a hacker at a dance club causes them to lose their feeds. Unfortunately for Violet, repairing her feed was practically impossible; meaning, Violet was slowly dying. Together, Titus and Violet question society, feed, and the way of life as they create their journey in the book, Feed. In Pixar’s Wall-E, the world has been abandoned by all of humanity because of the over polluted atmosphere. However, one creature still exists on earth, a garbage-collecting robot named Wall-E. One day, a futuristic, well-developed robot arrives on earth inspecting the earth of any species of life. Wall-E falls in love with the robot, Eve, and when she returns home on her spaceship, he hops on and catches a ride to space. There, Eve and Wall-E work together to save the planet earth in a futuristic love story, Wall-E. M.T. Anderson’s Feed and Pixar’s Wall-E, exaggerate a society influenced by technology using both similar and different story lines.
He sacrificed his happiness for Ilsa’s by giving her and Victor the visas so they would be safe. He shoots the police officer who was going to call for the plane to stop. He knew he had to kill him so Ilsa and Victor could get away to America. He could have been put into jail for shooting the police officer he sacrificed his wellbeing for theirs. When the young girl comes to Rick to ask about the man selling the visas he lets her husband win ten thousand dollars so the girl would not have to pay for the visas in other ways. He could have been caught cheating and lost peoples trust. He could have lost the business and trust of the people who are always gambling and buying drinks at
Zachary is a kind, intelligent but slightly obsessive young man. He is a developing character because throughout the story you discover different aspects of his character. His character seems very predictable it turns our that his actions are unpredictable in the end. The story ends with a twist, which explains his actions throughout the story.
Film Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep This film is much more than just an acceptable homage to Philip K Dick, author of many original science fiction novels, often laced with philosophical perspectives on reality and human dependencies. The book, published in 1968, deals with the very postmodern theme of cultural fatigue in relation to our humanity, of the essential human quality of empathy, its limits and its contrasts. Human beings remaining on Earth are propped up by dependence on artificial pets and their feelings towards one another is contrasted to explore the ironic nature of how we place our emotions in order to survive. This is the device and purpose of the concept of androids: He had wondered as had most people at one time or another precisely why an android bounced helplessly about when confronted by an empathy-measuring test.
... try to secure the downtown area, they were quickly overrun by the zombie horde. After hiding in a burned-out tank, Rick is eventually recused by a group of survivors who have been making risky supply runs into the city. When he returns to the group’s camp outside the city limits, he discovers that his wife, son, and best friend are also part of this rag-tag band. After the tearful reunion, the question of what to do next drives the subsequent episodes.
Throughout the book I felt connected to one character, that character was George. George and I share similar qualities and our lifestyles can relate. One major characteristic I found in George is his ability to take the initiative in whatever he is doing, therefore showing his sense of leadership qualities. This caught my eye automatically since I am the type of person to stand up and demonstrate my leadership to others. I feel that my leadership quality is very important to who I am. It defines me as being me.
...ere are devices that can create humanlike beings, ways for them to feel, and ways to alter their mood. Part of being a human is the ability to have emotions, but both societies have completely artificial emotions for humans and androids alike. People do not care for each other in the World State because technology prevents them having genuine emotions. In Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, a human is defined as someone who has empathy. That is a trait that both humans and androids share. It is Dick’s view that humans and androids are essentially the same. The fact that the distinction between android is being blurred shows that humans are becoming more artificial. In the World State, the humans are decanted like a science experiment. People in Brave New World, have also become machine like. Since technology has mastered over nature, there are no natural humans.
Even though Skinner made a name for himself through his scientific endeavors, his novel Walden Two displays his literary training and knowledge. By using the metaphor of the sheep to further explain the lives of Walden Two members in an enriching and scholarly way, Skinner manages to weave science and art together. His ability to enforce the ideas of positive reinforcement, acceptance of roles, and the politics of the Walden Code through the simplicity of a flock of sheep shows his literary merit. Skinner proves that he is not only a scientist, but a writer as well.

Throughout six seasons of AMC’s ongoing hit show The Walking Dead, Rick Grimes, the main protagonist, has grown from: a tough guy police officer with a soft heart for helping others (almost always coming with a great personal risk) to the ultimate leader and survivor. Rick’s character arc during the first five seasons of the show, were about the ongoing growth/development of Rick, along with little benchmarks along the way in the form of gruesome but necessary murder. During Rick’s character arc, he goes through three major phases that reflect his morals and view of the world. These changes are then highlighted by the various brutal gory kills Rick has achieved. We as viewers get an in depth look at this gradual evolution as he fights to survive
Both Rick Grimes and his actions are moral and unselfish. Rather than being self-centered, Rick puts his life on the line to protect the group and his family with the best of his ability. The well-intentioned actions and selfless motives of Rick is evident in these three examples. In the early events of the zombie outbreak, Rick manages to escape the hospital and meets Morgan and his son Duane. After Duane mistakens Rick for a zombie and knocks him out with shovel, Morgan and him bring Rick to their shelter. Even though Rick is desperately concerned to locate his missing wife and son, he never forgets to return the favor. For a few more days, Rick stays with Morgan and Duane as he takes the two into the town's police department to use the showers and retrieve weapons and ammunition. Despite the overwhelming danger and his worried state, Rick is able to retain his good moral character to the people of of his neighborhood, like Morgan and Duane.
In the show, Captain Ed Mercer can lack focus and be decidedly unprofessional, but he always does his best and looks out for his crew. He (and many of his crew members), as an inherently flawed protagonist, embodies the idea of the everyday hero—an ordinary person, doing the job they do every day, helping others and
The Walking Dead, a television show about surviving in the zombie world, is based on the comic book with the same name created by Robert Kirkman. In this show Rick Grimes, a sheriff's deputy, awakes from his coma and finds himself in a hospital. He soon discovers that while he was in a coma the world had become infected, turning humans into flesh-eating zombies later called Walkers by the characters. As Rick sets out to find his family he encounters many other survivors such as Glenn, Daryl, Carl, Maggie, Carol, Sasha, Hershel, Beth, and Michonne, among many others who have died along the way. Rick and the survivors have been through a lot throughout the show, such as having to move from place to place to avoid being eating by walkers. After walking a longs way, they finally find shelter in an old prison where they now live. Although The Walking Dead shows a lot violence, it sends many positive messages to the viewers that teach them about survival, religion and betray and how each of these can be beneficial in the real world
