College can be one of the best experiences of a lifetime, many people find themselves, discover their professional calling and discover that the world around them has so much to offer. However, it can have its downfalls as well, the major one is stress. Being a college student is stressful for a number of reasons. Most children look forward to the day that they graduate high school and are free from the shackles of forced schooling. First comes kindergarten, then elementary school, next comes middle school and then high school. High school acts as a prelude to college, where students focus on their academic performance as a means to get into the finest schools. Many people do not go to college, however it seems apparent in this day and age that college is necessary in finding and keeping a job that …show more content…
The pressure of test performance and acceptance into the best colleges begins early and continues to mount until the acceptance letters arrive, the graduation cap is thrown and the congratulatory checks are cashed. After graduation, most high school students take that deep sigh of relief and enjoy their summer. It is not until the following fall that reality sets in. In American society, most of us live with our parents from the day we are born and follow their rules until it is time to leave their household. Newfound independence can sometimes be tricky, some embrace the feeling of having no one to tell them what to do, while others feel as though they are falling without a net. That feeling can sometimes be exciting, but other times it is terrifying and can leave you riddled with anxiety. That foray into adulthood is marked by the baptismal of being away from home for the first time. College is a time in which many people first begin to experience homesickness, are burdened with a large amount of work and have trouble staying focused on their academics in the face of a whole new world of social interactions, all of these can combine to create huge amounts
As the economy evolves and the job market continues to get more competitive, it’s becoming harder to have a successful career without some kind of college degree. This creates a belief in many young students that college actually is a commodity, something they must have in order to have a good life. There’s many different factors that influence this mindset, high schools must push the importance of the student’s willingness and drive to further their education. College isn’t just a gateway to jobs, but it is an opportunity to increase knowledge and stretch and challenge the student which in return makes them a more rounded adult and provides them with skills they might lack prior to
In the essay “College Pressures” by William Zinsser, Zinsser speaks about the pressures and anxiety that plague college students, all the while wishing that they had “a chance to savor each segment of their education as an experience in itself and not as a grim preparation for the next step.” Referring to the 1979 generation of college students as “panicky to succeed”, he lists four of the following stressors for college students.
High school and college are tremendously vital for preparing people for the real world. High school prepares students for college or the workforce. College expands ones general knowledge and skills, such as the ability to express ones opinion orally and written. Post secondary education also increases the understanding of the community and society. CollegeBoard says that more and more employers want employees who have education beyond high school. College graduates have more jobs to choose from than people with high school diplomas. The United States Census Bureau reports that workers with a college degree earn double the salary of what a person with a high school diploma makes. Education is becoming more critical than ever, and people who want a career should expect to get a college degree. Both high school and college play a crucial role in effective police work; as a result, police officers with an academic background get fewer complaints and less disciplinary action.
Everyone has experienced some type of stress in their life. Whether it has been from work, school, or trouble at home, stress is stress. If anyone had played sports in high school, you know the challenge of balancing school and sports. Imagine that stress, then multiply it exponentially. Everyone knows that college is a much more rigorous version of high school.
Students are becoming more stressed due to academic demands, social life, and work. First-year college students should receive more help from school to learn how to help themselves and become independent. In college, students must learn how to manage their time, organize their schedule that meets their college and personal duties, how to be resourceful, and how to interact with people whom they never met. Before college, a variety of students already learned how to accomplish these skills, but only a few of these students are fully responsible for themselves before leaving their home. Students who are dependent are most likely to have been helped by their parents who took an overprotective or extreme interest in the life of their children.
One question that comes to mind when graduating high school is, “should I attend college?” For many graduates this question have a very obvious answer. A high school graduate may state that, “college is the best option if one is trying to get a higher level of education, and will help one compete for a higher paying job.” However, in my opinion most graduates do not consider the fact that going to college is a very big decision to make and that the schoolwork will not be easy. Going to college is not the best choice for every high school graduate because many students cannot handle college, colleges’ lower standards, and not all jobs require a college degree.
In today 's society, there are multitudes of pressure high school students face. One of the biggest pressures put on high school students is the decision of going to college. From the moment students enter into a secondary education, they are constantly asked questions about their future plans. Teachers and parents expect students to perform their best, while giving them no chance but to look towards college. In some cases, however, college might not be the answer. Other options exist as alternate avenues after high school, however, these are not as often expressed as the idea of a four year university. Although a college education and degree is most often more impactful than a high school diploma, there is too much pressure

Stress is an important problem faced by many college students, especially first year students, and it can have a large impact on college freshmen. For example, according to Hirsch and Keniston (1970), about half of first year students do not graduate from college due to dropping out (p. 1-20). Also, David Leonhardt (2009) agrees that the United States excels at putting “teenagers in college, but only half of students who enroll end up with a bachelor’s degree” (p. 1). In addition, the level of stress seems to increase each year. For instance, the National Health Ministries (2006) claim that many college students have become “more overwhelmed and stressed” than the student generation of the last fifteen years (p. 2).
The purpose of a high school education is to prepare one for college and ultimately, the workforce. By the end of freshman year, in high school, the average student has learned a sufficient amount of material in enough subjects that he or she can be considered "well-rounded" in his or her studies. This is because the rate at which material is covered in schools, across the nation, has increased dramatically compared to the past. Students now learn more advanced curriculum at a younger age, and this continues to become more evident year after year. High school has now become more focused on teaching students a small amount of information on several essential subjects, rather than having them focus deeply on the subjects they seek to pursue in their career.
Schooling is a very important aspect in our lives and one must go through many steps to gain a higher education. Two of these steps are high school and college. Although high school and college students aim for the same goal, which is acquiring an education and graduating, the demands, expectations, and social atmosphere extremely contrast.
Going to college can be an exciting new experience that can challenge a person more than he or she thought was possible. Attending college, especially for the first time, can be a very stressful time in a person’s life. Some of the stress that is associated with attending college are living in a new place, having to meet new people, having new responsibilities, and of course the homework that goes along with taking classes. If a person does not learn to cope with these stressors in a healthy way, that person may become very overwhelmed and possibly depressed (Hoeger & Hoeger, 2010) .To keep one’s body and mind safe from the overexposure of stress, they can practice the following techniques.
As a teenager, independence is one of the most desired ideals. However, it has a broad range of various topics; independence basically means the ability to handle responsibilities, but it differs from the needs of certain people. Gaining a driver’s license, getting a job or heading off towards college are the main moving points of a growing teenager. It is the same for me; my main focus would be to arrange my needs for college and develop preparations for future careers, which would happen afterward. As a rising senior, I will declare my independence by preparing my university options, ready myself for obstacles from my major and develop an awareness of my career options.
Many college students often feel overwhelmed by homesickness when starting a new chapter of their lives. Homesickness is most commonly due to feelings of anxiety, depression, and loneliness. A research study concluded that homesick college students are three times more likely to drop out over a student who has adjusted well to college life. For many first-year college students, being away from home can feel like an adventure. It can be exhilarating to be off on your own and completely in charge of your life as well as your social well-being. I know that during my first week in college, I didn’t feel homesick at all because I was so anxious to meet new people, explore the campus, and start the new journey of my life. However, as I became more used to the setting and people around me, I found myself to be occasionally missing home at
School plays an important role in our lives. Many people will spend more than fifteen years at school in order to get the qualifications that are required to work in a specific field. Those years are broken down into several levels, some of them being more enjoyable than others. Two very important levels that people go through are high school and college. Even though some think that these levels are almost the same, there are significant differences between them. The cost of high school is not the same as the cost of college. Also, some differences apply from an academic point of view. Typically, the social environment also differs from high school to college, which can be related to the question of freedom versus responsibility.
