My definition of what it means to be an American is having the ability to better my life, have a just government,able to prosper throughout my life, and to be free and proud to live in America. As an American I should be treated equally just like everyone else under the law and businesses. People strive for this when they live in different countries and states because it is not provided where they live so I should be able to take advantage of where I live to the fullest. If I am not able to do this then am I truely “free”? Being an American I want to wake up happy to be alive where I am currently living. When people think of America they think freedom of their problems and a better place to live. They look to America as a better place to live
because our government, job options, and the ability to raise their family better. These are all thing that can and will happen if they move to America but it will have to come with hard work. Living in America come with hard work and dedication to your life and job, a good life doesn’t just come to you. If immigrants plan on moving to America they are going to have to know this or else it’s going to be a rude awakening for them.
To be an American is to be proud of your flag and country, to be willing to suffer for America, and to never be willing to give up.

The meaning of being American is the ability to do and feel what u want to do and be able to do it freely. What does it mean to be an American? Can this statement ever really be defined since America is a melting pot of different races, religions, political views, social views and so on and so fourth. The definition of an American, is someone who is a citizen of the United States. Many African Americans, and immigrants struggled to become actual Americans in their lifetimes, because others didn 't see them as actual people; and based it on the color of someone. In today 's world people who live in America consider themselves as Americans, but to me there is certain qualities that make a person an American. To me being a true American is not based off of what Country they were born in, or what race their parents are, or even if they were immigrated to the United States. People from all over the world would say that maybe people could base this off of someone 's family heritage, or where they were before they came to America. If you were asked what makes an American an American what would you base it off of? To me there are four specific characteristics that make a person a true American; those three things would be, freedom, individuality, belief in the country, and happiness.
Nationalism is extreme loyalty and devotion to one particular nation, and many Americans are nationalistic about their country. But even though they are loyal to America, defining what it means to be a true American is tricky. Being American is one complex thing, but the concept of being American can not be fully grasped. What it means to be American may in fact be one of the biggest mysteries of all time. Indeed, discovering what it means to be a true American could possibly take an entire lifetime. One thing, however about all true Americans is certain: we are all alike in that each one of us is different from the Americans in important ways. We are diverse in our backgrounds, races, and religions. Nevertheless, we are exactly identical in the we feel toward our country, even though we express our pride in a million different ways.

The freedom to believe in any religion they please (freedom of religion), say whatever they want (freedom of speech), protect themselves (the right to keep and bear arms), and women rights set America leaps and bounds ahead of many other countries.
Perhaps the most exclusive aspect of American freedom is stated directly in the Declaration of Independence. It states, "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness" (Jefferson).
