The obvious theme of Rikki-tikki-tavi
A theme is a big idea we take out of a story after reading it, we suggest that is what we think the author’s purpose of writing the story was about. The story Rikki-Tikki-Tavi is about a mongoose and two cobras that are very vicious to one another. They are as vicious as a big man with an axe that can kill you fast with one swing, like Rikki-tikki with one bite. The theme in this story is everybody can be courageous even though they are afraid. I can observe why others may think that the theme could be good vs. evil, but it is obviously everybody can be courageous and still be afraid.
The protagonist, Rikki-tikki-tavi, and the antagonists, Nag and Nagaina, both posses courage, as well as fear. Example one of how the.protagonist is courageous and still yet afraid is when Rikki-tikki was wanting to protect Teddy’s family and he was afraid that Nagaina would hurt him because he got a hold of one of her babies . “ You will leave

this house and not come back or I’ll kill your baby.” If Rikki-tikki would not have killed all of the babies it would have taken him a million years. She did not think that Rikki-tikki was telling the truth so she tried to strike Teddy she was standing tall and swaying to and fro she was ready to strike. Rikki-tikki was full of enough courage to try and kill Nag and he did do it. This next example is an example of the antagonists’ Nag along with Nagaina, they were outside talking and making a plan of what they were going to do when the boy’s family goes to bed. Nagaina was fearful to go inside and do the dirty work so she sent Nag. Nag was afraid to. He said to Nagaina “ Are you sure there is anything to be gained by killing them?” “Yes” said Nagaina, “we will have a home for our babies and when they are all dead im sure that mongoose will soon leave too.” They did not think that Rikki-tikki would hear them but he did. Soon after they were done talking Nagaina was gone and Nag was outside asleep, Rikki-tikki was wondering if he should attack or not and he said to himself “is it the head it gotta be the head. “ so he went for the head and he pushed against the wall to keep pressure on Nag’s head. He was afraid that he was going to flip on him and kill him , he also had enough courage to go and fight Nag. The protagonist, Rikki-tikki, is smaller than the antagonists, the cobras that are as big as the Sequoia tree.
When the snakes stand tall and they want to try and strike either at the protagonist or Teddy’s family Rikki-tikki will not let them. He is small but he can be stronger when he wants to, just because you are small does not mean you cannot accomplish big things. Rikki-tikki is as small as a newborn baby, but he can handle things well when he wants to. This is an example of how that is possible when you are small. When the protagonist was talking to one of the antagonists he was totally distracted and he did not know that they had a plan of the other antagonist sneaking up on him and was going to strike. Although Rikki-tikki was distracted, he did not fall for it, he leaped into the air as high as he could and he jumped above both of them and as soon as he hit the ground he went inside away from the cobras. When you are small you can do great things, you can be courageous and still be
afraid. Kipling used the theme, everybody is courageous and can still be afraid. The reason he chose this theme is to help us think about the future and how we may act in a situation like this. You may be in a situation in life that has a purpose to this story, you would remember what you read about and think about the theme. At some point in your life you will be in that situation. Being afraid and fearful makes us cautious and keeps us safe from doing dangerous things. This is why I think the theme is everybody can be courageous, yet still be afraid. By: Hannah Walker
In To Kill a Mockingbird, the theme plays an important role during the course of the novel. Theme is a central idea in a work of literature that contains more than one word. It is usually based on an author’s opinion on a subject. The theme of innocence should be protected is found in conflicts, characters, and symbols. In To Kill a Mockingbird, a conflict that connects to the theme that innocence should be protected is the death of Tom Robinson.
Firstly, the part of the book when Billy got into a fight with the kids in the town is a great example of the theme change is inevitable. This part of the book demonstrates the theme that change is inevitable because Billy didn’t have a choice whether or not to fight. The town kids started teasing him first; he was bedraggled, dirty, and messy. Since he stuck out so much, the town kids started to tease him by pulling Billy’s hound’s ears and stepping on his bare feet. As a result, Billy became furious. “Smack on the end of Freck’s nose [his fist] exploded” (Rawls 43). Billy soon got dragged down in a maelstrom of punching and fighting. This fray was inevitable because Billy stuck out so much. The malicio...

Mark Twain best described courage when he said that, “Courage is resistance to fear, mastery of fear - not absence of fear” (Twain). Both in The One Who Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest by Ken Kesey and Watership Down by Richard Adams, the authors deal with the topic of courage and each share a similar view on it as this quote. Indeed, both authors suggest that courage is not accumulated simply by acts of heroism, but rather by overcoming fears and speaking one’s mind as well. These books are very similar in the way that bravery is displayed through the characters in an uncommon way. Firstly, an example of bravery
An example of courage, as the judgment that something else is more important than fear, is through the character of Kak in B for Buster by Iain Lawrence. In this novel, Kak is characterized as a young, determined boy, desiring to turn himself from a comic book reading boy into a World War II hero. Planning to escape his drunken, abusive father, Kak enlists himself in the Canadian Air Force although he is underage and only sixteen years old. During his first mission, he is becomes frightened of the risk of not coming home alive, but doesn?t show his emotions because of his austere, intrepid crewmen. During this mission, Kak did not have an absence of fear, but he felt that becoming a hero like the ones in his comic book, and accomplishing his dream of fly, was more important than his fear of dying.
Courageousness may seem to be measured by the people look on the outside. They look brave, heroic, and have some luck. Now, if someone looked on the inside of that person what would they see. Would they see a mentally strong person with high values in what they believe. On the opposition, the person might find out how scared, mean, and vulnerable they are. Courageousness is how little a person's values are affected when opposition and suffering happen in life. Also, doing things that they fear doing to boost their confidence and defeat their fears, this is courage. In A Separate Peace, The character Finny, who is bright and looking like he is brave all the time might seem to be the obvious candidate for being more courageous than Gene. Gene, who has little bravery an is weak. Gene though is actually the more courageous one because of his willingness to fight for his values and stand up in the face of opposition.
An idea that recurs in or pervades a work of art of literature can be referred to as a “Theme”. Themes often explore timeless and universal ideas and may be implied rather than stated explicitly. Theme is an important part of fictional stories. Several themes are presented in the novel to kill a mocking bird. One of the reoccurring themes in to kill a mockingbird is courage.
The theme in a story is the message or big idea that the author is trying to reveal in his or her narrative. If there was no underlining theme in Sherman Alexie’s short story, “This Is What It Means to Say Phoenix, Arizona” then readers would have no interest in reading the fictional story. Understanding the message that Alexie is trying to display to his readers can vary in many ways and depends on the reader 's understanding of the story. Strong themes that are presented in the fictional tale are man versus self conflict, family, and tribal identity. Victor is a tribal member that has had a rough life and has to deal with his father passing away. Not only does he have to come to terms with his father 's death, but he also has to face his
Themes are the fundamental and often universal ideas explored in a literary work. The story “Battle Royal” by Ralph Ellison displays a few specific themes through the story which are easy to depict. A few themes from this story are, first racism and finding his self identity, then the danger of fighting stereotype with stereotype, and last blindness. These themes play an important role in the story to better help the reader understand it.
Courage is a praised characteristic in the novel To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. Many characters embody the true meaning of courage, although different aspects of courage are illustrated throughout the course of the novel. Mrs. Henry Lafayette Dubose, an elderly ill-tempered woman, shows admirable determination by kicking her morphine addiction on her deathbed. Atticus Finch, a lawyer in a Southern town plagued by racism, defends a colored man in the South without submitting to social pressures. A reclusive, yet benevolent Boo Radley confronts his fear of the outside world and leaves his home in order to save the lives of two children from a murderous drunk. Scout and Jem’s interpretation of courage continues to change through the course of their experiences, and they begin to understand the perspectives of those who demonstrate courage. By adhering to strong moral convictions, and demonstrating incredible willpower and determination, each of these characters proves to be courageous in his or her own right.
“Earth people will beat out any other intelligent life-form in any and all competitions” is a theme, but “good always beats evil” is one too. “Once upon a time . . . ” stories have themes too, except they are more one-dimensional. For example,... ...
Theme plays a very important part in this short story. Theme is the idea of a literary work abstracted from its details of language, character and action. The great example of theme that is evident throughout the entire short story is the duty to perform certain acts. We can see here that the Irishman Donovan is very big on obeying his duty to carry out orders that have been authorized to him.
Theme is an idea the story reveals that relates to life; it can be used as the lesson learned. In “Rikki-Tikki-Tavi,” a story by Rudyard Kipling, the theme is obviously good triumphs over evil. Therefore, in the story Rikki, the protagonist, represents good and he triumphs, or wins over evil, which are the cobras. They are also the antagonists. At the same time, some people may believe the theme is never give up, but I’m going to prove how unlikely that is.
Theme can be obvious but not because the theme topic is obvious, when the theme statement is more elusive. One example is when Rene gets a you tried ribbon and she compares it to her sister’s 1st place trophies. Rene writes I hate Sunny in her diary (0:25 - 0:39). This section of the story makes you think about the theme topics of jealousy and hatred. By watching this part, you can’t identify the theme statement because you don’t have enough info. Another example of this is when the black monsters combined into one big monster. The big black monster said kill sunny in a dark, distorted voice (1:53-1:58). This suggests the theme topic of revenge and violence. Even with four theme topics the theme statement, and the soul idea of this video stays
For an abundance of authors, the driving force that aids them in creation of a novel is the theme or number of themes implemented throughout the novel. Often times the author doesn’t consciously identify the theme they’re trying to present. Usually a theme is a concept, principle or belief that is significant to an author. Not only does the theme create the backbone of the story, but it also guides the author by controlling the events that happen in a story, what emotions are dispersed, what are the actions of characters, and what emotions are presented within each environment to engage the readers in many
