Obtaining a thought process similar to one of a mature adult, Laurie acquired the ability to deceive his parents. The short story “Charles” was written by the author Shirley Jackson; the piece developed the early experiences of Laurie’s elementary years. He had been the older brother of an infant sibling; despite this factor, Laurie remained a young kindergarten boy. The anecdote occurred during the 1950’s between the home of Laurie and his kindergarten school. Throughout the early weeks of kindergarten, Laurie’s misbehavior was driven by jealousy, mischievous thoughts, and the pure desire to mislead his elders. Evidently, Laurie was unable to adjust to the kindergarten environment easily. Laurie became attention-seeking and longed for reassurance from his mother and father. Initially, he arrived home to his parents’ flood of questions pertaining to his first day of school. Laurie began answering to the interrogation in short responses; suddenly, he determined he would nonchalantly mention a disruptive boy present in his class. The two stories “War” and “About Effie” from Timothy Findley’s Dinner Along the Amazon are both told by the same child narrator, Neil. In each of the stories Neil attempts to make sense of a mystery of the adult world. In “War” Neil tries to understand the adult world of war, and explain why it seems that his father has betrayed him, and in “About Effie” Neil tries to understand the mystery of Effie’s strange need to wait for a man in a thunderstorm. Neil reaches an understanding of each of these mysteries in a similar way: through observation of non-verbal clues from adults. However, Neil’s own attempts to communicate non-verbally through his behaviour are unsuccessful. Taken as a whole, these two stories show how very important non-verbal communication is in child-adult relationships.
In the short story, “The Intruder”, by Andre Dubus, the main character, Kenneth, experiences changes that affect his relationships with his family and himself. Even though thirteen-year-old boys undergo quite a few changes in this time of their life, Kenneth goes through even more shifts in his world during this story. As Kenneth avoids sharing his imagination with his family, hides his sister, Connie’s, secrets for her, and shoots Connie’s boyfriend, Kenneth’s way of relating with the people in his life is affected drastically. In “The Intruder”, the effect of Kenneth and his family’s actions are shown through the changes Kenneth undergoes.
Exploring the minds of six-year-olds can be a very interesting experience. Gary Soto narrates this story as a young boy at a time when he seems to be young and foolish. Soto does a great job of showing the contrast between right and wrong through a child’s eyes. He successfully conveys the guilt of the boy through his use of imagery, repetition and contrast. He uses these tools to get the reader into the mind of the boy so that they can explore his guilt and thoughts.
However The great majority of parents are often cryptic in these necessary lessons while still others try to build a protective shield around their children. Do they really believe this is to the benefit of our youth? It is understandable to want to protect children from unnecessary evils, but sometimes in constructing walls around their worldly vision they are in all actuality cutting their children off from reality. It is so much healthier and helpful to confront these issues head-on, rather than trying to skirt around them. & Juliet" by the students, such avoidance of the matter at hand will often prove more harmful in the development of young minds. Through the various misconceptions of the children in her short story, "The Brother in Vietnam," Maxine Hong Kingston allows her readers to see just how necessary truth is to the vulnerable minds of our youth.
Wilbur shows a good effort made to protect a child from fears because the fears are irrational. On the contrary, Collins juxtaposes a history teacher’s efforts to protect his students from historical truths and their ensuing behavior to show that the time he spends misguiding his students could be better spent teaching children to mature. Wilbur and Collins both demonstrate approaches to calming children; however the approaches differ in terms of protecting the children verses outright lying to them. Theses passages attempt to answer the controversial question of whether it is better to shelter children or expose them to the harsh realities of the world.
Lanham is sure “would set this boy straight” (9). Through the child psychologist, Tyler portrays another adult who fails Donny when he should have helped. It is ironic that a trained professional tells the Cobles that Donny is simply being a teenager and that he “had no serious emotional problems. He was merely going through a difficult period in his life” (11). As a child psychologist, he should be aware that Donny may have some deep routed emotional problems which are causing him to act out and display poor behavior, and that this acting out is a cry for help, but instead he passes off the responsibility to another individual by recommending the tutor, Cal.
In John Connolly’s novel, The Book of Lost Things, he writes, “for in every adult there dwells the child that was, and in every child there lies the adult that will be”. Does one’s childhood truly have an effect on the person one someday becomes? In Jeannette Walls’ memoir The Glass Castle and Khaled Hosseini’s novel The Kite Runner, this question is tackled through the recounting of Jeannette and Amir’s childhoods from the perspectives of their older, more developed selves. In the novels, an emphasis is placed on the dynamics of the relationships Jeannette and Amir have with their fathers while growing up, and the effects that these relations have on the people they each become. The environment to which they are both exposed as children is also described, and proves to have an influence on the characteristics of Jeannette and Amir’s adult personalities. Finally, through the journeys of other people in Jeannette and Amir’s lives, it is demonstrated that the sustainment of traumatic experiences as a child also has a large influence on the development of one’s character while become an adult. Therefore, through the analysis of the effects of these factors on various characters’ development, it is proven that the experiences and realities that one endures as a child ultimately shape one’s identity in the future.

Short stories usually convey a theme message, a statement which motivates the reader to be a more moral person. In order for the reader to understand this life lesson, authors implant different literary devices such as foreshadowing and conflict into their stories. Foreshadowing is the use of clues to suggest events that may occur later in the story, and conflict is when there is a struggle between two opposing forces. In Charles by Shirley Jackson and The Fun They Had by Isaac Asimov, the authors use foreshadowing and conflict to enhance the story's ultimate meaning and to keep readers absorbed in the story.
Laurie, the obnoxious boy, had a daily routine of going home and telling stories about the rude boy Charles in his class. In fact, one story that he recited was, “Charles was so fresh to the teacher's friend he wasn’t let do exercises.” This is included because it is conveying that the truth about Charles is right in front of them, who he is, what he does, and how he acts. Although, this is not exactly authorities trying to find out the truth about the murder it is still demonstrating the theme, the most obvious clue about who Charles is, is right in front of them, they just need to open their eyes. Eventually, the next parent night comes up, Laurie’s mom is anxious to meet Charles and his mother but what she finds out there is no Charles it is a astonishing surprise. “‘Charles?’ She said. ‘We don’t have any Charles in the kindergarten’” This is helping us infer the ending, that Laurie is actually Charles. And Charles was right in front of them the whole time, once again in arms reach but they did not realize it, they figured out the obvious in the end however, in Lamb to the Slaughter they never found out who it was. The sweetest person to them, really was the one who was disobedient. In conclusion, although, the plot in “Charles” was different, they still demonstrated the same theme through events that happen.
Antwone Fisher was an individual that endured so many things. He faced a lot of challenges that may have seemed impossible to recover from. This story was an example of the many things that some children may experience. Antwone was not raised in an upper crust home. He did not grow up in a home in which his mother and father was present. Instead of having positive role models, he had to live with individuals that were abusive to him. When observing Antwone’s personality, one may refer to two different theorists such as Bandura and Rogers.
Growing up and becoming mature can be an intimidating experience; it is difficult to let go of one’s childhood and embrace the adult world. For some people, this transition from youthfulness to maturity can be much more difficult than for others. These people often try to hold on to their childhood as long as they can. Unfortunately, life is not so simple. One cannot spend their entire life running from the responsibilities and hardships of adulthood because they will eventually have to accept the fact that they have a role in society that they must fulfill as a responsible, mature individual. The novel “The Catcher in the Rye” by J.D. Salinger follows the endeavours of Holden Caulfield, a sixteen-year-old teenage boy who faces a point in his life where he must make the transition from childhood to adulthood. In an attempt to retain his own childhood, he begins hoping to stop other young children from growing up and losing their innocence as well. As indicated by the title, “The Catcher in the Rye” is a book that explores a theme involving the preservation of innocence, especially of children. It is a story about a boy who is far too hesitant to grow up, and feels the need to ensure that no one else around him has to grow up either. His own fear of maturity and growing up is what leads to Holden’s desire to become a “catcher in the rye” so he can save innocent children from becoming part of the “phoniness” of the adult world.
The story began, familiarizing the setting and laying the groundwork for the book by introducing the plot and characters, and amplifying the dramatic tone for forthcoming happenings. The story is told from the point of view of a fourteen-year-old-girl whose name “was Salmon, like the fish; first name, Susie” ( Sebold 1). Susie was murdered by her neighbor, George Harvey. He plays an innocent widower and has the boldness to approach and express condolences for Susie to her mother and in response to this Susie says, “The man has no shame” (Sebold 8). He doesn’t care and shows no remorse for what he did. He in fact was so self-assured that he has gotten away with the crime he has committed; he had the “audacity” to apologize to Mrs. Salmon. Mr. Harvey is a character who unfortunately, seems to have many “mommy issues” and to the shock of many, Susie is not his first prey, but just one of numerous victims.
The children couldn’t accept what they thought was so horrible. There was a lot of ignorance and carelessness portrayed throughout this short story. While roaming the hills around an isolated home, a young boy named Henry, displayed rather unusual characteristics associated with his behaviors. What seemed like a cute and innocent boy was nothing but a face of hidden evil. Henry was a very free-spirited and often wild 12 year old boy who enjoyed engaging in daring activities while experiencing adrenaline rushes. His behaviors and curiosities seemed to be limitless, to the point where it brought forth a bit of suspicion. At this age, these types of behaviors may seem “normal” for a young boy like Henry; behaviors that display some hyperactivity, and self-exploration. However, Henry’s attitude and behaviors took a quick turn as his real intentions and motives became ever so clear. Henry is a young boy who grew up in a rather large home, set on top of a hill, overlooking the ocean in the state of Maine. He comes from two loving parents, a mother and father, and has a younger sister who looks up to him. He also had a younger brother named Richard, who died a while back from “accidently” drowning in the bathtub. Despite the tragic loss, he seemed to have a stable family lifestyle.
