At times, I noticed that the mayor would have probably been more attentive hearing from irate citizens than listen to Armenta trying to get clarifications to C-5. Unexciting as the council meeting agenda items might have been, it was still fascinating to see local government at work in such an orderly, proper fashion. We may disagree on particular ordinances or agenda items, but we will do so in an appropriate way that does not disrupt the city at large, and even though the topics of discussion were mostly mundane, students should still at one point or another witness their local governments at work. Doing so leads to a greater understanding for how day-to-day city improvements take affect and how important it can be to voice your opinion and be a leader within your community.

Making a good and persuasive argument is very much an acquired skill. It requires much practice and perfecting. It takes more than just having passion and making good points. Just because a person is passionate about the topic or has supporting details does not mean they can make a successful argument. Much more thought and skill is required. Gordon Adams, in his letter to the Arizona State University standards committee, demonstrates this quite well. Gordon Adams writes a passionate argument, yet his argument lacks several critical aspects.

He completes making high school students his primary audience by ending his essay with ideas of how to undermine school administrations and teachers. Gatto’s essay is intended to primarily target parents or to-be parents of public school students. He does this through his examples which help in supporting an argument to informed audiences or audiences with an opposing bias. When he addresses the audience, he also gives advice about how to manage their children’s education. Both methods are effective for their respective audience because they are relatable and use the correct form of argumentation for the bias of the target reader.
In Fred Ende’s article entitled “Policy, meet practice” (2017), the need to better current educational policies and legislation to fit the needs of the incredibly diverse student's population found in the USA is discussed. Ende states that the best way to change the present education system is through advocacy and informing others about the impact excellent education has on society. He suggested that when policy makers and educational professionals collaborate, share, and always keep the actual implementation of laws in the forefront of their mind, progressive changes would be able to take place that would positively impact society. He explains that advocacy is a very important aspect of education, and could easily be integrated into the education system we are using to better service every individual apart of the community.

The learning target for this project was identifying societal problems. Students would be able to identify the problem that is affecting our community. Students will be able to provide supporting evidence by using multiples sources to prove that the problem is relevant/important to my community. They can evaluate why the problem exists or the cause. Students will propose possible solutions that address the targeted issue in our community. In addition, students were required to using key terms throughout the unit. Some of the possible structure students presented their legislation through series of Instagram posts, front cover of a newspaper article, pamphlet, commercial or visual campaign, documentary, research paper, poem, song and/or music video.
The social issue that I have chosen to discuss is concerning a Head Start program that was designed for educational purposes of underprivileged children in 1964 (Schultz, 2013). During Lyndon B. Johnson’s campaign, he sought to end poverty and promised that he would boost education. In fact, he wanted to implement a series of programs that would give the people of our nation the right tools to pull themselves out of their current situations. After winning the election, Johnson called on all Americans to wage war on poverty and convinced Congress to pass the Economic Opportunity Act that would help to battle this and other issues. Parents should become more involved with their children’s school activities. Sometimes parents have to respect their child feelings and attitudes. They have to help their child develop a strong sense of self-esteem. Children’s should be encouraged to study good study habits. The community has to get involve with the gang stoppers. The mayor of the town has to invest in places where kids could go ad hang out at. The school principal could bring in an ex-gang member to talk to the students about how he or she lived. Also, they could talk to them about how they went to jail and what made them change their life. Parents could set a curfew and stick to that curfew. You could check your child room for drug’s, weapons, and excessive money.
In conclusion, I have showed what concerns are not addressed by the political process and why. Many things could be drastically changed on both sides to help these matters. I feel that the answer to this lies in political socialization. If parents stressed the importance of these topics along with the schools cooperation, concerns would be addressed and everyone would be heard alike.
