Thomas Jefferson was a tall statesman that held the respect of both Madison and Hamilton as he was associated with many great constitutional reforms of the 1790s. In addition, Jefferson played a vital role in the Declaration of Independence in June 1777. He was known to keep his personal views of things to himself as he hates conflict, which is also an explanation as to why he hosted a dinner for Madison and Hamilton. Even though Madison and Jefferson had a connection, he had to agree with Hamilton that debts needed to be paid to keep a good reputation with foreigners. In Conclusion. Thomas Jefferson and John Adams were the last living individuals from the first American progressives who had confronted the British people and manufactured another political group in the previous provinces. Then again, while they both trusted stock in vote based system and life, freedom and the quest for joy, their conclusions on the best way to accomplish these standards separated after some time. During the early 1800s America was still developing, trying to develop the government so it can learn to stand up on its own. Both Thomas Jefferson and James Madison played a key role in the country’s developing time, they created the idea of strict v. broad constructionism. Political parties were contradicting each other on the different point of views they had on the Constitution. Thomas Jefferson during his presidency sometimes made decisions that were based literally on the Constitution, whereas James Madison being a broad constructionist didn’t always take the Constitution literally.
Even though both were Republicans, their beliefs in the running of the country differed. Madison did not follow the Constitution quite as strict as Jefferson did. Essentially Madison forced men to enlist in the military and fight for the American cause as it states in Document D. Many questioned if it was constitution asking if it said anywhere in the Constitution that a president is allowed to take men from their families and make them fight in war. The answer to their question is no. Jefferson more than likely disagreed with Madison in this case. John Randolph, one of few Republicans whose view does not change, also questions Madison’s constitutional interpretation in Document F. He believes that Madison’s administration is following in the footsteps of John Adams instead of Jefferson. He feels that Madison is abusing his powers of managing trade for the United States with implicating tariffs. In Document H, the regulation of trade is also discussed. Madison becomes slightly stricter in his interpretation of the Constitution when he vetoes a bill for the construction of roads and canals. He says that this power is not directly given nor can it be inferred from the Constitution; therefore, he refuses to pass the bill. Thomas Jefferson and George Washington are the two most prominent leaders in establishing a stable government after the adoption of the Constitution. After the Revolution, America was unstable but was controlled after policies and regulations were set under the presidency of Washington and Jefferson. Washington excelled in making the right decisions based on what he thought was right for America’s future. Jefferson expanded independence because of his wants for more political liberty and freedom of religion and education. The post-revolutionary war period of the Unites States saw the establishment of the first party system and an enlarging gap in viewpoints between the wealthy and the common man. The contradictory views of Alexander Hamilton and Thomas Jefferson were primarily responsible for the rise of political parties from 1783-1800.
George Washington and Thomas Jefferson were two important men who affected our nations independence and the beginning years of our country. They helped form this nation into a free and sovereign country. Yet, they were different in many aspects they shared a few common features. Both Washington and Jefferson grew up in the southern state of Virginia and like most owned land to grow and harvest crops. In growing up they came from two different class levels of living. The Jefferson family was more famous and richer than Washington’s giving him a greater advantage and opportunity to succeed, especially in higher education. After Jefferson finished regular schooling he was able to attend the College of William and Mary were he studied law. He did so under the teaching of George Wthe who was considered perhaps the greatest teachers of law in Virginia at the time. Washington however was taught by his mom mainly in mathematics and received no higher education. Washington was still knowledgeable and began to put it to use in the army to become as a young British soldier. He interred the army at the young age of nineteen were he began to learn leadership and military strategy which would prove useful in the Revolutionary War to come. Jefferson on the other hand was involved in the laws, courts, and small politics. At the young age of twenty-five Jefferson was elected to the House of Burgesses in Virginia were he served for five years. Washington was known for his great motivational speeches that would rally troops together to prepare for war and lead on to victory. Jefferson was more of a writer not a speaker and by using his skill he wrote and brought forth fresh ideas of independence and freedom.
One of the earliest examples of Hamilton’s power was his role in the national assumption of state debts. After the Revolutionary War, individual states had varying amounts of debt. States with less debt were in favor of paying it off themselves, while those with greater debt needed some federal aid. Wanting to make the country more unified, Hamilton saw making a large collective national debt as a way to bring together the states. “Hamilton’s impulse, therefore, in assuming all outstanding state debts was to avoid unnecessary and destructive competition between state and federal governments, and at the same time to preempt the best sources of revenue for the United States Treasury” (Elkins and McKitrick 119). The author states Hamilton’s motives for assumption were to eliminate competition between the states that might damage the union. This fits in with his larger policy of strong national government. Other politicians were opposed to this, such as Thomas Jefferson and James Madison. Their opposition to the plan went away as assumption became associated with other less controversial plans of Hamilton’s. Madison even turned in defense of the plan after being convinced of Hamilton’s financial vision (Bowers 61). In today’s governmental system, it is rare when two cabinet members who serve together have opposing opinions on political and economical views. But this was the case when George Washington was president of the United States in the 1790s. Choosing Thomas Jefferson to be the head of the Department of State, as well as turning to Alexander Hamilton, and appointing him as Secretary of the Treasury (Henretta et al 195). These two men were extremely intelligent, Thomas Jefferson was the author of the Declaration of Independence in 1776 and Alexander Hamilton served as Washington’s secretary and advisor during the Revolution as well as being the leading person of the Constitution (Johnson165). Washington having known about these two men, wanted them to work as his cabinet with the mindset that they would accomplish great things, little did he know, these men supported two different political views.
He was bold and persuasive and his philosophies quite extraordinary for his time. Jefferson’s agricultural viewpoint was vastly different from Hamilton’s manufacturing perspective. A group of people with similar ideas and beliefs that agree on how the country should be ran is one of the many definitions of what a political party is. Although both Hamilton and Jefferson were both very successful and thriving men, Hamilton in my opinion was more efficient with his thinking. Hamilton was the first secretary of treasury of our nation and was one of the founding fathers of the United States. I chose Alexander Hamilton based on most of his thoughts and beliefs for the best of America our country.
Jefferson’s beliefs in local self government created differences between himself and Alexander Hamilton which created the Federalists (Hamilton followers) and the Democrat Republican’s (Jefferson followers).
