In life, growing up people always find that one person that they can have a bond with or just someone they can talk to about anything. Just like in football, players build a bond with each other to make the team chemistry stronger. The more time spent with each other the more of a friendship is formed. Leonard and Hap in Joe R. Lansdale’s buddy novel Savage Season are a prime example of having an amazing friendship. Even though they are an odd couple, the color of their skin nor obstacles they face can tear them apart because their values are similar and live by the bro code. They each had the desire to have enough money to eventually retire somewhere pleasant, but were unsure of how to accomplish this goal. In an online article entitled Savage Season by Joe R. Lansdale it says “Their friendship substitutes for other familial relationships, and they are content to scrape a living at menial jobs as field hands or day laborers” (Swiftly Tilting Planet). The two met in East Texas out in some rose fields outside of LaBorde. Although, the two possess different opinions on different topics, the two never held anything against the other. Leonard was someone Hap could trust and turn to in dire situations. Both guys realized that they were underprivileged and shared common values which initially sparked their friendship. Hap and Leonard can best be described as cynical yet sympathetic characters. In Larrisa Kyzer’s review she states “Despite their loneliness- Leonard is a solitary gay man who gleans most of his affection from three fiercely loyal bird dogs, and Hap is perpetually hung up on his conniving ex-wife Trudy. Both men are relatively satisfied with, or at least accepting of, their workday existence” (Savage Season). However, they shared much more than a rather unique relationship. During that time period racism was very much alive. Hap and Leonard caught themselves in various situations where rednecks and racism supporters tried to influence their friendship, but the two paid the ignorance no mind. The struggles endured yet overcame amongst the two solidified how they perceived race.
