Kaleb Kolstad Criswell Honors English III February 8, 2017 According to USAtoday, Concussions in the NFL have declined by 35% in the past 4 years and will continue to plummet with the new technology the NFL is going to enforce (USAToday). New equipment, advancing concussion protocol, and innovative turf are all things that the NFL is doing to help players be safe. Is it enough? Is the NFL trying there hardest to protect players from injuries? The NFL is currently doing enough to protect its players by implementing new headgear and padding, constructing a new and softer turf, and even making a concussion protocol. Professional football has been around for many decades, but has just recently been put under the spotlight. That is with injuries and safety of course. With videos all over the internet of players getting tackled and injured, it is hard to see how there is any sort of protection and safety in the sport, but there is. Football has come a long way since the 1960’s and new technology has made it what it is today. But is the NFL trying its hardest to protect their players? The answer; yes. You either think players are protected or you don’t. Believe it or not most Americans think the NFL is not currently trying to improve player protection. The problem is they don’t do their research. People watch players get hit and hear stories of players who can’t play in a big game because they have concussions. Most people don’t take the time to realize the NFL is trying to solve a problem that is nearly impossible to solve in a contact sport. (ESPN.com) There were a total of 83 concussions during the season of 2015, and in 2016 there were 71. That means in one year the concussion rate has decreased by over 15%.
