“The Monkey’s Paw” by William Wymark Jacobs is a short history that talks about a family separated from the outside the world. At the first part of the story they look a happy family that had everything they needed. There were three people in their family, Mr. White, Mrs. White and their son Herbert White. “The Monkey’s Paw” by William Wymark Jacobs has a meaning of desire to wish everything a person can and their unlimited tries to make it happen. One night they receive a visit form Sargent-Major Morris who had traveled in some places of the world but recently he had come back from India and had brought with him a monkey’s paw. The monkey’s paw could make three wishes happened for everyone who made a wish. Sargent-Major Morris gave it to the White family but he told them to be careful of what they wish for. For example, the story itself is written in three parts, the visit of the Sargent-Major Morris and the first wish, the Herbert death, and the second and third wish. The number of the family member is three, and the Sargent-Major Morris told the story of the paw after three glasses of whiskey. When the Mr. White asked to have the paw, the Sargent tried three times to convince Mr. White that he doesn’t really wanted. Another one is when the White family receive the bad news, the man from the company gate three times before he got in and tell the story. We can’t tell exactly why the author choose the number three as a symbol, but we can think that this symbol might have a religion meaning because of the Holy Trinity: the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Another reason might be that, the bad things comes in
In the short story, "The Monkey's Paw" by W.W. Jacobs, I came to the conclusion that Sergeant Major Morris was responsible for the sorrows that resulted from the monkey's paw. For instance, he was the one who owned the paw in the first place, allowed Mr. White to keep it, and even told them how to use it, stating on page 377, "Hold it up in your right hand and wish aloud."
In the story The Monkey's Paw the foreshadowing creates tension and suspense because during the story there was so many things going on and you didn't know what was going to happen next. I say this because in the Monkey's Paw the author writes He raised his hand. "I wish my son alive again." This quote explains foreshadowing by suspense because when he wishes for his son to be alive again it gives the audience suspense if he is going to actually be alive again or if it's not going to come true and they are going to be disappointed.
The Simpsons episode “The Simpsons Treehouse of Horror II” is about a magical monkey’s paw bought by the Simpsons, a modern day family that lives in a town called Springfield. The family uses the paw to grant themselves four wishes. The wishes, they soon find out, all include repercussions that harm the family in some way. The book “The Monkey’s Paw” is about a family that is given a monkey’s paw by a friend that says it can grant three wishes. The family’s home in this story is Laburnum Villa, sometime in the past. At first the family is skeptical of the friends claim that the paw is magic saying, “If the tale about the monkey’s paw is not more truthful than those he has been telling us, we shan't make much out of it.”(Page 4, W.W. Jacobs). They then proceed to use the paw and are surprised to find that what they wish for is in fact granted but comes with terrible consequences. While “The Monkey’s Paw” and “The Simpsons, Treehouse of Horror II” both share similar plots, the settings of the stories and the
The influence family members can have on the development of a child is enormous; they can either mold a healthy mind or drive a child toward darkness. Jennifer Egan’s Safari is a short story that highlights the different relationships in a family with a complicated background. Rolph and Charlie come from a divorced household and join their father, Lou, and his new girlfriend, Mindy, on an African safari. As the events of the trip unfold, Lou’s children experience a coming of age in which they lose the innocence they once possessed. The significant impact of family dynamic on children’s transition into adulthood is presented in Safari. Jennifer Egan uses Mindy’s structural classifications of Charlie and Rolph to demonstrate how Lou and Mindy’s relationship hinders the maturation of the two kids.
One being the fact that in both stories someone dies causing them to use up more wishes to wish them alive again. “...But in consideration for your son’s services they wish to present you with a certain sum as compensation.” (Monkey’s Paw page 4) This is when the White family finds out there son is dead and they receive their wish (200 lbs) because of it. Later in the story Mrs. White says, “...Go down and get it quickly, and wish our boy alive again.”(Monkey’s Paw page 5) So in result they ended up using another wish to wish their son alive. In the Goldfish story Sergei after killing Yonatan, with some convincing, also wishes Yonatan alive
Three wishes, an old Indian curse, and a mummified paw, that was cut from a monkey. This is going to be exciting! “The Monkey’s Paw” is a short story written by W.W. Jacobs in the early 1900’s just after the turn of the centenary. Even though the text is short, it grabs the reader’s attention and keeps them on the edge of their seats until the very end. As exhilarating as this thriller is to read, unfortunately like many literary works written during that time, “The Monkey’s Paw,” is demeaning towards women and goes against feminist literary criticism’s principles and ideologies.

In almost every story, one can find symbolism throughout the text to help the reader better understand what the writer wants the reader to takeout from his/her story. Symbolism is something that must be analyzed and explored to experience a deeper meaning to the story. Sometimes, symbolism throughout a story may not be noticeable when first read, but going back to analyze the text can add a deeper meaning to words and can also help to enhance the meaning behind the story line. In some instances, symbolism can leave a reader to ponder what the writer is trying to express with the symbolism used in the story; for symbolism can be interpreted differently and can have many layers of meaning to it. Some good examples of short stories that use symbolism to extend the meaning behind the story line are “The Lottery,” “The Jilting of Granny Weatherall,” and “The Jury of Her Peers”.
“Of Mice and Men”, by John Steinbeck is a novel about the hardships of life and the importance of having other people around. The story is of two men trying to survive with one another in a world full of loneliness; their relationship is quite rare and strange. Lennie, a large bear, has a mental disability which causes him to be in a childlike state. George, a much smaller and more competent man takes care of both of them. Although they work for others on ranches, their dream is to get by on their own and live off the land. However, Lennie’s state causes conflict as they travel from job to job. Steinbeck uses clever ways in his novel to develop his theme and characters as the story progresses; both of these elements also help create a large
The narrator of the short story is a son who is retelling the story his father is telling him. Therefore the point of view is limited to the son, and the main character is the father. In the story we meet three import people who are from three different generations. A grandfather, his son, and his son. Both the narrator and his father are motherless, and the father therefore lived in a very small town on the family farm during his youth. The story that is told is mainly about how the 18-year-old father to-be struggled with his life and growing up in a small town.
The night was cold and wet, and there was a glowing rim of light surrounding the house. Through the window you could see the fire burning and the White’s sitting in the parlor. Mr. White and Herbert sat playing an intense game of chess. Mrs. White sat in her chair knitting, while Vera sat on the couch with her nose stuck in a book. Vera loved to read and her father gave her this book from his last work trip to India. He bought it from an old fakir who when Mr White bought it said, the it was a book that showed that destiny was inevitable and those who tamper with destiny will suffer. As Vera finished the book she noticed that the final page had a description asking for three wishes. Being the young girl that she was she wrote two wishes closed
