The bell rings, I do a silent cheer. Gym is next and today we get to swim. I love to swim and I believe that swimming should be added to every school’s curriculum. Swimming helps kids stay fit, the perfect time to teach it is during gym so it doesn’t run into learning, and swimming helps everybody in their everyday life. Kids should be in the pool every single day. Swimming helps kids stay fit. In a half hour of swimming, it’s possible to burn 250 calories. Just by swimming laps in the pool everyday kids are burning many calories. Even in a week of school, kids could burn up to about 1,250 calories, That’s a lot! Another example is that Robert A. Robergs says, “Swimming is a good, whole-body exercise.” This means, that swimming works their whole body. Like in soccer, people mainly work their legs, but in swimming kids work their legs, arms, and core.
I know that most school’s number one rule is to keep children safe. So why not teach kids how to be safe in the real-world. Swimming helps build lung strength, keeps people moving so they don’t sit on the couch all day and get nothing done. Kohl Thomas D MD says, “Swimming is a great sport to learn when you're young because when you grow up older it keeps your joints and body healthier.” This means that kids should learn how to swim when they’re in middle or elementary school because when they grow up they’ll grow up to a better life. So they would be active and get in the water everyday. Finally, Human Kinetics says, “swimming positively affects many aspects of life, including physical, mental, and emotional well-being.” This is important because swimming doesn’t just help people stay fit it helps their health such as their mental help. Since the kids are swimming with others, they will most likely make new friends and that will boost their self-esteem. So they will be less shy and start talking to people more often. One of the many benefits of playing sports is that the children will build character. Building character is important because with character they will make new friends and develop different skills. Playing sports at a young age can build character in many ways, “Playing sports at a young age enables children to participate in social interactions and build skills such as teamwork, leadership, and responsibility as they learn to work with others to achieve a common goal,” (Aspen Institute).

As the starting signal goes off, you dive in and hear your team explode into cheers. This gives you a boost of confidence and you pull ahead, slamming into the finish and out touching your opponents. Knowing sports can change a person physically and mentally by making them smart, respectful, and healthier. Being in an after school activity is rewarding experience to all the students who are going to dedicated and focused on school and in the activity. Finally, student will be rewarded after school after the hard work throughout the day. Sports can influence students in many ways like character, making better graders, and lack of obesity. Fort Bend ISD should allow sixth graders to participate in physical activates: sixth graders would be satisfied.

Swimming has been my whole life, since I jumped into the pool for the very first time. I loved every aspect of swimming from the adrenaline running through my body during my races and getting to spend even more time with my friends and my sister, and the stress of big meets coming up in the schedule. Except everything didn't go according to plan after the first day of school when I got home and I saw my parents sitting by my sister on the coach and my sister was crying.

As a teacher my primary goal is to maximize student success. For me to accomplish that I need to create an atmosphere where students are enthusiastic and intrinsically motivated. Even though we do live in an extrinsic world, students need to have an attitude of doing things for themselves. Physical activity is a great way to demonstrate intrinsic rewards. Many life lessons can be taught through sports. Children can learn the importance of work ethic, working with others, perseverance, and the list goes on. There are studies that have shown that kids who are involved in athletics are more successful in the business world. It is only when parents turn the sporting events into an ultra-competitive requirement for their child that it can become detrimental. The lessons that sports teach kids about real life is one of the greatest benefits that can be gained from sports. Because so much can be learned through sports we need to make sure that we put focus on teaching lessons through sports rather than making it all about winning. It is a sad when parents turn a great beneficial thing into something that can be harmful for their children.
