Palm Springs is a pretty small community, but like any community we have issues surrounding our city. My local AVID class at Palm Springs high school wanted each of the students to find a topic surrounding poverty and ways that we can give back to the community. Our project was to make a powerful presentation with facts and why the poverty topic we picked was important. Many of the students had very strong presentations, but one poverty topic stood out the most. Child poverty and homelessness was something that each of us wanted to give back I think it was an important topic because it could affect anyone. One of the main reasons why we wanted to give back was because children live in households where they have to skip meals or eat less to
Nelson Mandela once said, "Overcoming poverty is not a task of charity, it is an act of justice. Like Slavery and Apartheid, poverty is not natural. It is man-made and it can be overcome and eradicated by the actions of human beings. Sometimes it falls on a generation to be great. YOU can be that great generation. Let your greatness blossom” (Make Poverty History, 2005). Gwinnett county is third in the country when it comes to a high poverty rate, with 14% of the population living below poverty (Family Promise of Gwinnet County, 2013). As an educator it is important to familiarize with the county of which one is to teach in, and poverty is an issue in Gwinnett county. One must understand the affects of poverty on children's learning, how to recognize children of poverty and how to help those students, and what rights those children have to an education.
I chose to do my service learning project at Feed My Starving Children. I chose this service learning project because I had prior knowledge and experience by doing it with my family and church. Feed My Starving Children has been a huge impact to those who have participated in this service experience because their mission is to pack meals that go to very hungry children around the world. Being from a single parent family, it is hard for us to not be concerned about where the money for food is coming from, yet we have food on our tables for everyday meals. Therefore, I can’t imagine what it is like for those who experience hunger.
Everyone knows what the word poverty means. It means poor, unable to buy the necessities to survive in today's world. We do not realize how easy it is for a person to fall into poverty: A lost job, a sudden illness, a death in the family or the endless cycle of being born into poverty and not knowing how to overcome it. There are so many children in poverty and a family's structure can effect the outcome. Most of the people who are at the poverty level need some type of help to overcome the obstacles. There are mane issues that deal with poverty and many things that can be done to stop it.
I performed mainly behind the scenes tasks such as making boxes and packing food. While I did not deal with feeding the hungry directly, I still learned and observed many lessons that were reflected in class. One thing I observed that we discussed in Reconciling All Things is people ignoring and crossing divides to help those in need. The people at the food bank did not care what the person’s socioeconomic status was, they still served and helped them. A lesson that became more solidified through this project was the fact that everyone’s job at the food bank, no matter how big or small, is important to getting to overall mission completed. Whether it was someone like me making boxes or someone serving food in the kitchen, we all played a role to end hunger. Another thing that I noticed through this project was that some problems are easier, maybe not by much but still nonetheless, to solve than we make them out to be. Hunger is probably the easiest social problem that can be solved in America due to the excessive amount of food wasted every year. I thoroughly enjoyed this project and watched things that were discussed in class come to
Author Nicholas Kristof makes a very sound argument using pathos. He goes about it by bringing up the idea that the impoverished children of America have been forgotten. If you want to get an emotional response out of your audience talking about children is a sure way to go. People will always react emotionally when children are involved, especially if it is something on the scale of lack of education and necessary resources to live. Also, Kristof quotes Mark Shriver, who runs the domestic programs of Save the Children: “We talk more about poverty in Africa than we do about poverty in America.” Thought most people are strongly supportive of our efforts to reduce poverty in Africa, Shriver’s quote beings to light that we are not even taking
My project will take place at Harbor House, a homeless shelter for teens. The Supervised Transitional Living Program provides shelter for up to 18 months, for adolescents boys and girls ages 16-21. The purpose of my project is to address the injustice of lack of education on these social issues. Many homeless adolescents in the program have experienced discrimination based on these social issues. By educating the youth in the shelter on these social issues, it will prevent reoccurs of youth being singled out because their black, white, gay, mental ill, etc. Picking on someone because they’re different is bullying, which is a social injustice. Therefore, it’s important to education the youth and to spread awareness about these social issues
Slide 1- what is child poverty: When you hear the term child poverty what comes to mind? ( first ask the audiences opinion, then state my own opinion) Child poverty denies children with the basic needs to survive, expand and flourish, it also deprives children from having equal opportunities such as attending school, having a roof over their head or having a warm meal to eat. Children that unfortunately face poverty have a higher chance of being abused, discriminated or exploited due to their poor living circumstances. "Poverty shows a strong association with child maltreatment, particularly neglected. The NIS-3 study, for example found that children from families with an annual incomes below $15000 in 1993 were 22 times more likely to be harmed by child abuse compare to a families with an annual income above $30000." [1] ( Once I am finished explaining I will play the introduction video to child poverty)
An issue that has been affecting the local communities in the Untied Stated is homelessness. How do we prevent this epidemic and how do we come to the aid of those who need help. It also happens to be an issue with our younger generations. For some families in parts of the United States they get laid off or are not able to find jobs and become homeless creating problems for their children and their futures. It is a terrible situation to be in when it is happening to students. Sometimes it is hard to spot out these kids who are struggling. There is not much research done on homelessness based on where one would go when it first happens but these young people are doing what they can for themselves to survive. There are signs that students may be homeless but most do not bring up the issue because they are ashamed of what they have to go through. Research is always done about the numbers and statistics of homeless students and there are some methods to escape the streets but the number still continues to grow. Solutions to help eliminate homeless students in a community.
My plan after college is to become a Sociologist or a Social Worker. With a college degree in one of these areas, I hope to impact my community in various ways. First, with the knowledge obtained from college, I hope to counsel with young people who are on the verge of going astray. In today's society, there are so many negative factors that influence young people. I want to help them understand the importance of setting goals and striving to become productive citizens. I also want to give them a sense of hope that with perseverance, they can become great role models for other young people.
When I was in high school I got the chance to travel to the Dominican Republic with my dad. It was the first time in my life that I would be traveling to a country where a fairly large percentage of the local population live in, what is considered by the United Nations, “extreme poverty”. Many people do not have access to clean drinking water or an education beyond primary school. I did not legitimately understand the situations of these people, and of over 1.5 billion people in the world for that matter, until I was able to see it firsthand.
The effects of homelessness on a child's education is definitely an important issue, Frances. This is a national issue, but will you first start locally? I like Soni's suggestion about trying to tug at the heart strings of people by introducing them to the faces behind homelessness. Maybe you would be interested in a Humans of New York type of approach to social media where you're able to share the stories of some of these kids in order to appeal to the emotions of your audience.
Commitment to community is a requirement for contemporary Americans and vital to its survival. “Love thy neighbor as thyself” is the unselfish act of sharing: from a cup of sugar to a wealth of information to the guardianship of all children involved and the protection of every individual in that said community. Whether that community consists of the “Classic Neighborhood, those with a common set of goals, or those who share a common identity” the thread that holds this matrix together is always woven into the shared identity as well as responsibility of all involved. (Redmond, 2010). A community cannot continue to exist through the will of withdrawn individuals who arms only embrace themselves and have no involvement whatsoever with neighbors one door away.
Though, the concept of community service is not very new its importance has developed in the past few years. There are thousands of organizations all over the world that engage and hold millions of young people all through the world. People of all age groups, with a maximum number of youth are involved in the process of community service. Community-based organizations include; social service organizations, non-profit providers and associations that engage both young people as well adults as volunteers. The process is beneficial both for the individuals as well as the society. Without community service people would not know the meaning of charity and giving back. Community service can be defined as a service that is performed for the benefit of the public. Community service is not a responsibly or an obligation; it is a commitment. A person must want to do it with good intentions and not because they are being forced to do so. Basically, community service is a way for a person to give back to a community in which they live.
Poverty is prevalent throughout the world around us. We watch television and see famous people begging us to sponsor a child for only ten dollars a month. We think in our own minds that ten dollars is only pocket change, but to those children and their families, that ten dollars is a large portion of their annual income. We see images of starving children in far away countries, and our hearts go out to them. But we really do not know the implications of poverty, why it exists, or even what we can do to help combat this giant problem in our world.
Citizen participation is a very critical aspect of the developmental process of any community. Botes and van Resensburg (2000) posited that “participatory development is very essential to the community development process”. This perhaps is because community development itself is meant to bring about improved living standard for community members, and not necessarily the initiators or executors of the community development project should they be from outside the benefitting community. Consequently, it is only logical that the people, for whom the project is design, be involved in the decision making process, beginning from the initial stage of needs assessment to the implementation and execution stages. More so, citizens’ participation in the developmental process that concerns them ensures speedy development and brings about a sense of importance and ownership, which ultimately translates to commitment and also helps in capacity building.
