Today when people hear the word “technology” usually laptops, cell phones, and other modern forms are the first forms thought of. Technology is no foreign thing for most people in developed countries and even underdeveloped countries. It provides a resourcefulness that wasn't achievable before modern inventions. It seems technology is taking over the world via smartphone. Why wouldn’t smartphones be so popular? In one hand-held device, so many tasks are achievable. However, technology goes far beyond smart and computerized devices. Other aspects that seem completely normal to society are often neglected to be thought about. This very practical and important object makes sense to have been one of the first transportation technologies. While more advanced today, the wheel is still very relevant and needed. It is used in all departments of transportation. Without wheels wagons couldn’t roll, horse buggies couldn’t be pulled, bikes couldn’t be ridden, automobiles wouldn’t drive down the street, jets wouldn’t zoom down the runway to take off. Before the wheel, people would use animals, such as horses, or carry things around themselves and that began to feel impractical. A technology of the ancient world aside from transportation helped historians roughly guess where the concept of the wheel began. By studying ancient pottery with paint and engravings, historians trace the invention as far back as 5,000 BCE, but the exact time and place are unknown (Slaughter). Transportation through water is also a very simple, yet significant and relevant innovation that connects many places to each other. Clay pottery reveals the use of water vessels as far back as 4,000 BCE in Egypt. This makes sense, as they were utilizing what’s known as the longest river on Earth: the Nile River. To navigate around the waterways, these ancient vessels features oars and sails. Ancient forms of boats can be traced to many regions of the world, but not many stuck because of how unadvanced they were. The pottery showed how simple the designs of the ancient flotation devices were, also revealing the slow advancements made until only about 150 years ago (Stilwell and Woodward).
