Although Gilman herself doesn’t class herself as a feminist, there are clear representations of the feminist ideology throughout The Yellow Wallpaper. Gilman may have denied this relation due to similar reasons as the Bronte sisters when they used male pseudonyms to publish their work - as the feminist movement didn’t gain momentum until the 1960’s whilst the Yellow Wallpaper was published in 1891. The main feminist theories in The Yellow Wallpaper this essay focuses on are; male characters relations with women, the blinding effects of ideology, cultural stereotypes in literature and the idea of all women being ‘essentially helpless’. One particular feminist critic whose work can be applied to The Yellow Wallpaper is Millett who argues ‘most We can see this event has occurred in The Yellow Wallpaper in the line ‘it is fortunate Mary is so good with the baby’ (page 6) this tells us her baby has been taken away from her for someone else to look after and we can presume this is due to her mental state. Another short story this happens in is The Giant Wistaria however as this is also by Gilman some critics may argue that this is just her subjective view against the treatment of women. Another cultural stereotype of women at the time was that any mental illness they developed was deemed ‘female hysteria’ examples of this in the text are ‘there is really nothing a matter with one but temporary nervous depression - a slight hysterical tendency’ (page 3) and ‘John says if I don’t pick up fast he shall send me to Weir Mitchell [an American physician] in the fall’ (page 8). Weir Mitchell was Gilman‘s doctor and when she developed a mental health problem he provided her with the rest cure and told her to ‘live as domestic as life as possible’ (Appendix B). This allows the reader to make a clear link from the short story to cultural stereotypes at the During The Yellow Wallpaper the narrator says ‘I know John would think it absurd. But I must say what I feel’ (page 10). The freedom of speech has been a human right that predates modern international human rights and allows everyone to have opinions; feminist critics would argue that in The Yellow Wallpaper and other texts written at the time this right is taken away from women. Overall it is clear that feminist criticism plays a key role in opening up meanings throughout The Yellow Wallpaper. Although Gilman’s main objective with the short story was to ‘save people from being driven crazy [due to the same illness she suffered from]’ (Appendix B) in the modern day it can be used as an outlook on how women were treated and viewed in the 19th century. In “The Yellow Wallpaper”, Gilman has carefully crafted her sentences and metaphors to instill a picture of lurid and creepy male oppression. The surface of the text contains clues about Gilman’s perceptions of the treatment and roles of women, the narrator stumbling over words like “phosphates”, her being uncertain whether the correct term was “phosphates or phosphites” (Gilman 1684), which clearly shows that in her time women had been overlooked in education and because for a time, only men had that privilege, they were able to learn what they had to in order to earn jobs, which is illustrated in her husband and her brother both being “a physician of high standing” (Gilman 1684). In Charlotte Perkins Gilman's short story "The Yellow Wallpaper," the reader is treated to an intimate portrait of developing insanity. At the same time, the story's first person narrator provides insight into the social attitudes of the story's late Victorian time period. The story sets up a sense of gradually increasing distrust between the narrator and her husband, John, a doctor, which suggests that gender roles were strictly defined; however, as the story is just one representation of the time period, the examination of other sources is necessary to better understand the nature of American attitudes in the late 1800s. Specifically, this essay will analyze the representation of women's roles in "The Yellow Wallpaper" alongside two other texts produced during this time period, in the effort to discover whether Gilman's depiction of women accurately reflects the society that produced it.
One of the most notable feminists of that period was the writer Charlotte Perkins Gilman. She was also one of the most influential feminists who felt strongly about and spoke frequently on the nineteenth-century lives for women. Advocating social, political, legal, and economic rights for women equal to those of men, Charlotte Perkins Gilman speaks to the “female condition” in her 1892 short story “The Yellow Wallpaper”, by writing about the life of a woman and what caused her to lose her sanity. The narrator goes crazy due partially to her prescribed role as a woman in 1892 being severely limited. One example is her being forbidden by her husband to “work” which includes working and writing. This restricts her from begin able to express how she truly feels. While she is forbidden to work her husband on the other hand is still able to do his job as a physician. This makes the narrator inferior to her husband and males in general. The narrator is unable to be who she wants, do what she wants, and say what she wants without her husband’s permission. This causes the narrator to feel trapped and have no way out, except through the yellow wallpaper in the bedroom.
Traditionally, men have held the power in society. Women have been treated as a second class of citizens with neither the legal rights nor the respect of their male counterparts. Culture has contributed to these gender roles by conditioning women to accept their subordinate status while encouraging young men to lead and control. Gilman creates a horrific tone that helps explore the idea of freedom and confinement within a certain place. The story is created to follow the situation of the narrator and how slowly she begins to deteriorate psychologically due to the wallpaper. The narrator is never assigned a name, therefore it can be assumed that the story is suppose to serve as a voice for the women who have been in a similar situation and have lost their freedom and say on their own lives. However, the narrator appears to come from a wealthy family with privilege so there cannot be this idea that all women who have been through this form of depression and inequalities have experienced it in the same form. Through the use of imagery, the reader was able to understand and clearly visualize the situation in which the narrator is in and see how she has begun to slowly deteriorate, even though she is finally freed in the end of the story, or at least that is what is assumed. “The Yellow Wallpaper” is indeed a very profound image of what it was like to be a female during the 19th century while emphasizing the themes of freedom and confinement. Her story focused on a woman named Jane who couldn’t make their own decisions and the males overlooked them. “The Yellow Wallpaper” was a story about a lady who was forced to live by other decisions and rule of her husband. “My brother is also a physician, and also of high standing, and he says the same thing.” (376) Jane’s husband and her brother never took her ideas very seriously, and laughed on her feelings and ideas. She always felt suffocated in a room with yellow wallpapers because no one appreciated her ideas, which forced her to become, useless and imprisoned in her own home. When Jane requested her husband to change the wallpaper of the room, he rejected her ideas and wished to keep her imprisoned in the room with small windows. The condition of Jane in the story represents the current situation of women in society, they have rights but they are not being listened to. In (DATE) Heather Savigny wrote “Feminisms In News”, the article presented similar ideas as in Gilman’s story. “As with other political movements, it has its detractors, and feminism is often blamed for much that is wrong with our society.” (Heather Savigny) Among all other things, feminism is also important in society but women get blamed for everything wrong. Now-a-days women take same jobs as men, but they don’t get the respect they deserve. The article presented a very clear idea of how women don’t get compensated in the society although they challenge themselves to take same level jobs that men do in the society. "The Yellow Wallpaper" motivated the female mind of creativity and mental strength through a patriarchal order of created gender roles and male power during the nineteenth century and into the twentieth century. While John represented characteristics of a typical male of his time, the yellow wallpaper represented a controlling patriarchal society; a sin of inequality that a righteous traitor needed to challenge and win. As the wallpaper deteriorates, so does the suppressing effect that male hierarchy imposed on women. Male belief in their own hierarchy was not deteriorating. Females began to think out of line, be aware of their suppression, and fight patriarchal rule. The progression of the yellow wallpaper and the narrator, through out the story, leads to a small win over John. This clearly represents and motivates the first steps of a feminist movement into the twentieth century.
Firstly, the majority of the characters in this piece are males, while the minority, female characters playing weak and submissive roles. For example, Ford wrote, “John is identified in relation to the patriarchy first and in relation to his wife only afterwards: he is ‘a physician of high standing and one’s own husband’. In “The Yellow Wallpaper” the physician is the quintessential man, and his talk, therefore, is the epitome of male discourse” ( ). Gilman obviously shows us how society viewed the man, but also how she viewed the man. Not only was John the patriarchal figure, but he also was the ‘voice of reason’ that stunted the imagination and expressivity of his wife. This ‘voice of reason’ would make him the foil for Gilman’s narrator because she is the voice of insanity.
