In F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby, the narrator of the story, Nick Carraway, is new to the rundown area of West Egg in New York. He is from a well-known family in the West, but comes to the East for business and adventure. His small, humble abode is located next to a mysterious, lively mansion owned by a man named Gatsby. Tom Buchanan is a man of wealth. In the area of East Egg, the sparkling area of New York, Tom holds a high rank in the social class. Nick and Tom have their differences concerning Gatsby and morals but are brought together by a beautiful, cynical woman, Daisy.

Nick and Tom do not see Jay Gatsby in the same way. Nick, a newcomer to the area, finds himself living right next to Gatsby. As Nick gets to know him, he uncovers bits and pieces of Gatsby’s mysterious identity. Throughout the book, …show more content…

Nick holds a standard of high morals. His father raised him to not be judgmental towards others telling him “...just remember that all people in this world haven’t had the advantages that you’ve had” (Fitzgerald 1). Nick’s morals also shine throughout the book because he is seen as a honest and trustworthy character. He has a good head on his shoulders with the gift of discernment in situations without being judgmental. For example, Nick shows his good discernment throughout the book as he sees the real Gatsby, unlike everyone else's view of the mysterious man. Nick gets to know Gatsby personally, not basing his opinion on the presupposition of others. Tom can be described as a man with very low morals because he is greedy, boastful, and unfaithful in his marriage. Tom proves to be greedy and boastful when Nick comes to visit Daisy. Tom greets Nick bragging about his home saying “I’ve got a nice place here.” (Fitzgerald 7) Tom is a man who is very concerned about his social rank, money, and white supremacy. Tom’s infidelity to Daisy when he cheats with Myrtle also shows how low his morals
