Through the course of a lifetime, lots of things change. We experience changes in communication technology, fashion, medicine, and many other things. People even change, but there is one entity that does not, Jehovah God. The consistency of God is taught all through Scripture. In Malachi 3:6 God confirms, "I the Lord do not change (ESV)." God does not change is written word, promises, nor his nature. Though God does not change, theology does. The course is about Systematic Theology, and is designed to give a basic review of Christian doctrine. Systematic is defined as relating to or consisting of a system; presented or formulated as a coherent body of ideas or principles (merriam-webster.com). So, systems bring things into agreement, cohesiveness, and togetherness. About theology the textbook states, “The study of theology is by definition the quest for the ultimate truth about God, about ourselves, and about the world we live in (Guthrie 1).” Based on these two definition, I surmise that Systematic Theology give us a foundational framework to operate in as we carry out the mission set forth for us by God found in the Great Commission to, “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo , I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. The Doctrine of Predestination is about God’s salvation plan to redeem mankind back to himself. Now arises a question, how does predestination apply to non-Christians and Christians alike? It is God’s desire that all come to repentance and receive salvation, we find that supported scripturally in 2 Peter 3:9, “The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance (KJV).” However, for non-believers, just as it is with believers, God love them too. I agree as we said in class that we are moving from orthodoxy to orthopraxy and I for one think that is a great thing. If we do not accept change then we put our clients well being at risk because we are unable to provide clients with valuable information if we are unable to accept change.
The authors’ state in their introduction to the book they were “hopeful that laypeople and seminarians will find here an orientation to theological reflection that can be put to use right away and built over time.” At times this was a difficult read, which fortunately challenged my thinking and pressed me to read and concentrate on the information I was asked to understand, but this book is required reading for seminary. As a Roman Catholic life is marked by interior devotion to God and following the Ten Commandments. Theology, is understood to mean supernatural theology that is the science of God and Devine things, in as far as it based on supernatural Revelation. There are five aspects of covenant. For the purposes of this paper I am going to be referring to primarily the new covenant that is offered us through Jesus. The first aspect is the parties involved. There are two parties: God and the elect. Unlike the old covenant, the elect goes beyond the Jews. It also includes the gentile, or non-Jew in all the nations. This is one aspect of covenant that has helped shape my worldview. I have spoken to people who believe that God only selects a few privileged people to be saved, and condemns the rest to eternal punishment in hell. I now wholeheartedly believe this to be completely false, and even a heresy. In John 3:16 God uses the phrase “panta ta ethne” which means “all the nations.” There are other places in scripture, for example, when Paul says in Romans 1:16, “I am not ashamed of the gospel because it is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes…” He clearly says ‘everyone who believes’ not leaving anyone out. There are places in scripture, such as Ephesians 1:11 that talk about things which are predestined for believers. This verse is commonly taken out of context by those who believe in predestination. He has indeed planned out things He wants those in covenant relationship to accomplish for His kingdom once we accept Jesus and make Him Lord of our life. He does not, however, make the choice beforehand to save some, and damn some to hell! God created us in His image, therefore we have also been given the gift of free will to choose to love Him or love the world. This is the depraved condition of mankind in our fallen state.
