Background Information A stepfamily refers to when a new couple brings children from a previous marriage to start a new family (AAMFT, n.d.). For a family to qualify as a stepfamily, at least one partner must bring in a child or children. It, therefore, implies that children belonging to the female partner are introduced to a stepfather who is different from their biological father. On the other hand, children belonging to the male partner are introduced to a stepmother who is not their biological mother. The children brought into this new setting may also be introduced to other siblings leading to the creation of a larger family. The parents may have never been in a marriage before, or may have been from a previous marriage that may have failed due to various reasons.
