When I First signed up for this class I can honestly say I had no idea what sociology was this was just one of those classes I had to take to get into Saint Martin’s. The first day of class I wasn’t sure what to except but as Carlos introduced the class to sociology I was excited to learn some new things but I had no idea what was in store. The information in this class has opened my eyes to so many different ideas of what today’s society truly is and how we are trained not to see it. I feel like a blindfold was removed from my eyes in the duration of this class and the events of this year have been perfect modern examples of what we were learning in class. I can’t imagine going through the past couple of months without being in this class …show more content…
Every one of us can do our part to make this world a better place we just have to actually put forth effort. Think about every generation that has come before us and the obstacles they faced and overcame that is their legacy that is what they will be remembered for my question to the millennial generation what do you want our legacy to be? I want to say how much this class has meant to me and the lessons it has taught me and the perspective it has shown me it has change how I see the world. Most importantly I learned that is there is hope and we can make a difference if we stand up for what we believe in and to make a difference not wait for someone else to. I never in a millions years expected this class to impact me as much as it did going from not even knowing what sociology even was to having a better understanding of today’s society and a much stronger motivation to make a difference. I am extremely glad I got the opportunity to take this class and learn so many new things about society from Carlos I feel as if I have grow as a person from the first day of class to the last. I hope to make a difference in today’s society instead of complaining about what I don’t like I really do think that we can change things even though things look a little bleak. After taking this class and would defiantly agree that sociology and ethnic studies should be a requirement in some shape or form whether its in high school or college people need to have the blindfold removed from their eyes because just like me I would have never taken this class if it wasn’t a requirement but I can say I am glad I did and I know everyone in class would agree with me when I say thank you showing me what I have been taught to
I have learned a great deal since being in this class. I have learned terms and concepts, ideas and theories, but most of all, I have learned the staggering problem that involves diversity and social injustice.
The past few months in this course have been a rewarding and memorable learning experience. Some of these lessons I will carry with me for the rest of my life. I feel more prepared to face society and the people in it head on in my pursuit of a better future. I can begin to answer the essential questions of how society really works, our place in history, and who will prevail. As I further my educational and career goals I will be equipped with an arsenal of facts and a new way of thinking that I can incorporate into everything I do. The sociological perspective, is this a new lens to view the world through. Which has enabled me to see how the larger problems of the world affect me and how I in turn affect them, giving me the ability to predict the direction of the world and make smarter choices with a greater degree of accuracy is which is always an in demand skill.
In sociology class, we talk about different concepts that affect people in their everyday life. Starting with when they are born, people accept these concepts as their lifestyles. During this class, we learned about society and how people impact society as well as society impacting the lives and views of people. Society changes around the world and in different cultures even in people’s views. Throughout this class, I got to look at how society has affected my life and how these different concepts changed my views. Family, friends, church, school, etc. can changed how one looks at life and issues in the world. We looked at stereotyping and prejudices, alongside families, and religions. Each plays a role on how our lives end up and what we personally act like.
Before this class began, I was not very sure about who was considered to be in poverty and who was not. My idea of poverty related to the starving children that you see on television in third world countries and it never really occurred to me that poverty is also one of the biggest problems that society is faced with throughout the world today. It is very apparent that poverty should be one of the main priorities for our world leaders and that we should stop at nothing to end poverty as quickly as possible. In America as the rich get richer, the poor get poorer and the gap between the two is still larger here than anywhere else in the world. This class has improved my knowledge on the subject of poverty and I now understand how big of a problem poverty in the United States as well as poverty from a global perspective really is.
When I first signed up for this sociology course I thought that it would be a walk in the park but I was sorely mistaken. There are so many things that go into sociology and the world around us that sometimes it was difficult to even comprehend. It gives us a better understanding of society and why some people act the way they do. Once one is able to understand the concepts of society and what makes it work then they can go about trying to fix things and make society better as a whole. It has also helped me to figure out that the way people interact as groups can lead us to a better understanding and acceptance of other cultures and personal beliefs. Sociological imagination is the ability to see and comprehend the impression of social factors
The racism had a big historical significance if we go back to the history. Also, I learned what is capitalism is how capitalism effected with other society. Things that I have a deeper understanding of your core values in the context of social justice theory. I learned to identify various forms of power, privilege, and oppression that have existed in the USA throughout history and into present time. I learned to skillfully engage in reflective learning to explore and understand your service experiences. This course focuses on issues of diversity, oppression and social justice. It is designed to prepare social work students to be knowledgeable of people’s biases based on race, ethnicity, culture, religion, age, sex, sexual orientation, social and economic status, political ideology, disability and how these contribute to discrimination and oppression. The challenge of my preconception I personally thought the class will being kind other social classes but when I in the class I learned so many different thing that I was thought I will learned and my teacher classified in many ways. Before in this class I thought the racism it is something you can make your own but I learned it is something that from in our genetics. Also, I thought racism it is
Society is constantly changing as well as the individual perspectives in a changeable society. One of the challenges of being a member of a changeable society is the continued discovery of social changes. Yet from time to time, I step back and try to figure out the factors that affect these social changes. However, the issue of socioeconomic class, for example, less opportunity for people to attend college because of poverty, has been around for centuries. I am a victim like everyone else of the social changes contributing to the issue of socioeconomic class in the United States so much that these social changes shape peoples perspectives.
Through this program, I feel I had acquired an important amount of knowledge in different areas, which will help me to improve my teaching, giving me the necessary tools to better serve all my students, especially the English language learners (ELLs). I understand the importance of been a culturally-responsive teacher. I understand the importance of having a clear portrait of the school, and being able to understand diversity in school. Through research, I can learn about student’s background, culture, ethnicity, and language they speak. I acquired the knowledge about linguistics and language acquisition, which will allow me to support my ELLs in my content area. I will be able to recognize the areas were students struggle acquiring a
I recall taking my children to the pediatrician for checkups and this doctor would ask them where they got their “pioneer bones”. This random comment about their sturdy, healthy bodies became an ideal opening for the first of many conversations with my children about where they came from and who were their ancestors, and helped both of my children to establish a strong self-identity beginning at a very young age. My parents and my husband’s parents also felt that it was important to instill a sense of family heritage by sharing knowledge of family background, ethnicity, culture, stories, and traditions. I feel that learning about the past has enabled each one of us to chart our own course in life, while also understanding that
In this paper, I’m going to talk about personal experiences and sociological ideas that I’ve learned throughout this course. Some of the social concepts I will be talking about are race, class, gender, and norms in sports. You will be personal reflections throughout this paper, you will see articles on things that we have covered in class.
When a couple is expecting a child, they are anxious to know whether the unborn baby is a girl or a boy. However, they do not realize that their child can feel different about himself or herself while growing up. The child's sex is either a male or female of course, but when the child starts puberty, that is when he or she starts to realize that they behave as the opposite of what their sex is because that is how they feel in the inside of their mind. That would be considered their gender because the term means the behavior and attitude of how that person is seen in society according to their masculinity and femininity. On the other hand, the meaning of sex is something everyone inherits and are also biological characteristics that differ the men and women
Now living in an area not only more racially and ethnically diverse than my hometown, but with a far larger socioeconomic gap as well, I saw yet another side of human life that shed light on the reality lived by so many people. While I lived in my fraternity house deep in a low income area of Long Beach, my interaction with the community around me was life changing. Passing homeless people, gang members, and drug addicts on the street among other struggling, hard working people every day showed me for the first time what my parents had been telling me when I was younger. My first time seeing the look on someone’s face whose only concern was where their next meal was going to come from, or where they were going to sleep that night was chilling, but one that ended up opening my mind and making me a better person in the process of developing my understanding. In addition, this was also the first time in my life being exposed to drastically different political opinions as I interacted with the members of my fraternity and the people in my classes. My interactions within these settings helped form my belief as well in that both provided safe and respectful environments for everybody to express their views, but in the end, put aside any differences in order to come together as friends and
This is a reflective writing essay, based on what I learned this semester in my sociology 1013.51 Introduction to Sociology. I am going to discuss a few of the concepts and lessons that I have learned in class and from my instructor.
Throughout this semester I have learned a lot and has changed the way I view things. It has opened my eyes about all the inequality, discrimination and troubles in the world. I’ve enjoyed taking the time learning about how to expand my critical thinking. Before signing up for this class, my views on the world were very broad. I knew there were plenty of issues in the world but with the readings in the books, documentaries and clips it has made me see the issues in a very detailed way.
Soren Kierkegaard once said, “Life can only be understood backwards, but it must be lived forwards.” Although life may be an ever-moving conveyor headed to an eventual end; it is important to look behind us to understand what has happened. Through this understanding, we are then able to better live as we continue on this journey called life. Although not explicitly stated, Mr. Kierkegaard is speaking of the importance of reflection. It is important to reach milestones, look back, and figure out how you conquered the once seemingly impossible. Only through reflection can you then conquer the next mountain, which will surely be even bigger than the last. In a similar way, the mountain I have recently conquered is leading a group of 6 freshmen to a common goal. Even though I was well prepared and had a fairly good grasp of what would be required of me, traversing over this metaphorical mountain has shown me new parts of myself that were previously unknown.
