Human beings were not put on earth to live in fear or fear the future that awaits them. Their mission is to serve a special purpose in society. By helping to create a better society, there would be fewer problems to worry about in cases such as education, economic, social, and health problems. The concept of social justice means finding justice for all genders and races that have been mistreated whether it is physical, mentally, or verbally by others. Social justice is stopping inequality within society and helping others that fall from injustice towards society. With social justice provided, it helps make the world a just, sustainable, fair place. The most effective method for a positive change is taking time and doing activities with each other to understand individual’s belief, and their identity. In addition, respecting and accepting the way an individual identify their selves can create a positive change.
In “Mending Wall” by Robert Frost, one neighbor wants to break down the wall that separates both of them. They each need something from each other whether it is food or resources. Each year, they come together to discuss ways to fix the wall that separates each other. This neighbor wants his other neighbor to join together as an "entire "community despite their belief and differences. Within “Theme for B” by Langston Hughes, Hughes finds some similarities towards another race. "I like to work, read, learn, and understand life…I guess being colored doesn’t make me NOT like the same things other folks like who are other races.”(443). Hughes wants races that separate themselves from others, to realize that they all have at least share one a similar quality as individuals. Coming together as all races can create an outcome of solving economic and social issues. The concept of social justice relates to English Theme B because races such as African Americans and others are not treated and viewed the same compared to whites. Whites tend to themselves as superior to other races. By them feeling superior to other races, each race separates themselves from one another. Hughes wants his professor to see that Blacks also share common likable things as of the professor race as he is white. By Hughes wanting to show his professor this, he hopes to educate his professor into coming together peacefully and helping society out. Whites see themselves as their own individual race and brushes away other races. By finding social justice, races can help create a just, fair, stainable society by accepting and respecting one another beliefs. Both authors explore the progressive attitudes and how these were received during the time period of both Fitzgerald and Robert. Frost presents this idea in the poem, ‘Mending Wall’. The poem is about two neighbours who every year go to the end of the garden to meet and build a wall together. However, one neighbour is confused as why there needs to be a wall as there is nothing that needs to be divided or prevented from escaping or entering. This neighbour begins to challenge the other neighbour, ‘why do they make good neighbours?’
“Theme for English B” and “Let American be American again” share some similar elements. These poems both written by Langston Hughes both explain about inequality. Theme for English B revolves around the separation of the black and white man; the differences within each race were segregation was at a high point. Let America be America again revolves around the concept that America is supposed to be the land of the free, but to another race or background; it’s a total opposite. Being a teacher for social justice is more than just making sure you include all of your students in your discussions. It is being aware of the injustices that your students may have faced, are already facing, or may face in the future. With this awareness, as teachers, we should be able to reflect on what we know, and respond by using our resources to apply it to the classroom.
Critical social justice, unlike the more mainstream social justice, looks at the inequalities present in society more critically and actively tries to change them. Though the word “critical” has many negative connotations critical social justice purpose is not to judge but to help people think about the different perspectives of an issue. Social Justice is about making society function better – providing the support and tools to help turn lives around. This is a challenging new approach to dealing with poverty in all its forms. It is not about income poverty alone.(SJS) Throughout this essay I will explore why Poverty is a primary issue when striving for Social Justice and how, we as professionals, can attempt to overcome this by working together to achieve a fairer more just society. Social Work, Primary Education and Community Learning and Development are working together collaboratively to achieve Social Justice. I will discuss the changes that have taken place in our professions and the guidelines and regulations that we must adhere to. In addition to this I will examine the positive and negative outcomes of my group experience working together with CLD, Social Work and Education Students. I will also address the historical perspective in addition to the philosophical perspectives.
Social justice is a core value in the social work field. We define social justice as, “all citizens would possess equal fundamental rights, protection, opportunities, obligations and social benefits (Kirst-Ashman & Hull, 2015, p. 29). Unfortunately, we understand there are many members in today’s society that are not receiving social justice. Some may not want help and believe that s/he is able to do it on their own and then there are the individuals that we may not know about that could really use our help. Our jobs as social workers is to help those who need help no matter if they are rich, poor, disabled, white, Hispanic, it does not matter because everyone should be treated equally. As NASW states, “The original mission of social work had much to do with championing the rights of society’s most vulnerable members, from children to homeless people to the physically disabled” (NASW: National Association of Social Workers, 2015, para. 1).
Social Justice enables individuals to become more empowered and self-aware. It gives individuals equal access and diminishes negative prejudices and stereotypes. The minority in society is oppressed by the dominant ones and social justice strives to diminish that. I am privileged and that allows me to obtain an education to help others. I am going to use this to help others gain the same privileges that I have and be able to build the future they want. Throughout middle school I would have friends that would be made fun of or denied entry to certain social groups, unless they were with me. Just because they had a different skin color or their culture was different they were not allowed to play tag on the playground. Associating negative stereotypes and prejudices, about cultures or ethnicity, to a young child is not okay. Only letting a child join a game of tag when a member of the dominant group is accompanying them is also not okay. This is a huge issue in society and not just when it comes to children, teaching children to become culturally competent and aware at a young age will lead to the decrease of this social issue. I strive to be culturally competent enough to have the ability to aid various individuals on their road to empowerment, safety, and self-healing. Educating myself is just the first step, joining the Social Work program will help me expand my field of knowledge. Through this, I will be enabled to become a better social worker and
