"Inaction breeds doubt and fear. Action breeds confidence and courage. If you want to conquer fear, do not sit home and think about it. Go out and get busy." - Dale Carnegie I have been studying, writing about, teaching and applying the principles of successful living for close to forty years now. These principles are timeless, changeless and there for everyone to apply and benefit from. I have also discovered that the principles of success are often misunderstood, feared, misrepresented and lied about. None more than the principle of self-confidence. The principle of self-confidence has been twisted and redefined into many things, none that truly represent what real confidence is. It has been called "Self-Centeredness" and often turned into …show more content…
Robert Schuller Self-confidence is the knowledge and understanding that you have particular talents and strengths. It is the awareness of what you can do and the desire to do it with excellence to the best of your ability. Real self-confidence is not thinking you are better than everyone else but knowing that there are some things that you can do better than everyone else. Where some may think that to have confidence you must have a big ego, the truth is that real self-confidence is humble and focused. The man or woman who possesses real self-confidence will do their job with excellence and not feel they have to let everyone else know that they did. Excellence is always recognized by those who see it. It is the person who lacks confidence in themselves who feels they have to point out what they do to everyone around …show more content…
Nothing can be done without hope and confidence." Why do we need to build confidence in our lives? Simply put, without it we can achieve nothing. When you feel confident you have the courage to strike out and face the challenges before you. Self-confidence is the knowledge that you have the ability to achieve your goals. It is knowing that even if you fail at this attempt, you will learn from the mistakes, move forward and win in the end. People with confidence are those who develop the determination to keep keeping on, even in the face of great difficulties. U.S. President, Abraham Lincoln was a man of great self-confidence. He failed in politics more than he succeeded, however, when he did succeed it really mattered. Starting with great disadvantages and many heart breaks, he was confident that he had something to give to his country. He was one of the more humble of all Presidents. Knowing full well that he could not do it alone, he build his Cabinet with the very best of the leaders of his day. Some were his enemies, yet he recognized their abilities more than their disagreements. He went on to become one of the most respected and cherished leaders in world
Too much confidence can cause a sense of arrogance, much like Odysseus. Not enough confidence can make you uninspiring and weak as a leader, much like David. People who live their own monomyth everyday, and have the right amount of confidence, achieve great things.
What does it mean to possess confidence? Confidence is one word that has a vast impact on today’s society. Without confidence one’s whole life could and will be turned completely upside down. The autobiographical narrative, “Fish Cheeks,” by Amy Tan, is about a fourteen-year-old girl who describes her thoughts and feelings about the minister’s son and reveals to the reader that she is not accepting of herself. Throughout my life I have learned not to let others dictate my opinion of myself, because who I am or where I originated from is qualified and in reality, no one is capable of standing in my shoes. “Fish Cheeks,” written by Amy Tan, is a
We gain strength, and courage, and confidence by each experience in which we really stop to look fear in the face… we must do that which we think we cannot. - By: Eleanor Roosevelt
In the Webster's online dictionary, self-confidence is defined as confidence in oneself and in one's powers and abilities. A famous quote by Jim Loehr says, "With confidence, you can reach truly amazing heights; Without confidence, even the simplest accomplishments are beyond your grasp." Confidence in yourself does not come without effort. One must believe in themselves, and not let someone change their beliefs. In the novel Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte, Jane shows self-confidence throughout the novel, by possessing a sense of self-worth, dignity, and a trust in God.

Individuals who have solid self-confidence express high level of self-esteem, self-regard and more sense of pride to themselves (Chuang et al., 2013). Their tendency is more optimistic in most of circumstances (Rosenberg, 1979) and when they are facing complicated situations, self-confidence plays an important role in supporting their decisions (Bearden et al, 2001). The characteristics of self-confidence indicated by White (2009) are trusted in positive accomplishment (self-assertion and optimism), persistence (endurance, flexibility, goal setting and anticipation) and self-awareness (judgment, intrinsic part and worries). On the other hand, the low level of self-confidence will make people feel pessimistic and less self-respect, they can only view their inappropriateness, imperfection and valuelessness (Rosenberg, 1979). Some researchers determine the determinants of self-confidence as precise knowledge and self-efficacy (De Cremer & Van Hiel; 2008). Confidence is a way of being in the world that demonstrates assuredness and comfort in the skin you're in. Do not confuse this with egoism, which is a way that many falsely convey the self-esteem that they lack. Those who are acting from an egotistical place will exaggerate their importance, call attention to their accomplishments and find the need to seek praise because they're not really sure of who and what they are. Do you think that Nolan Ryan had to tell people what a great pitcher he was? Do you think Steven Spielberg has to remind people

When an individuals self confidence or self esteem is brought down, there are normally some prolong effects that take place in that person life. Self confidence can be defined as, "...a personal resource that helps one to focus on the task..." (Elfering 94). Elfering continues by stating, "...individuals who are more self-confident are also more confident about coping successfully with novel tasks because they believe in their abilities rather more" (Elfering 94). In addition to the thoughts of Elfering, people who's self confidence is higher are capable of performing more tasks than ones who's confidence is lower. To put it in perspective, if a student or child is exposed to how disrespecting the feeling of individuals lowers that person self confidence, then the child would have a better understanding of why not to do so. Furthermore, Elfering also states, "...greater self-confidence to be associated with normal stress response whereas lower self- confidence should be associated with prolonged stress responses" (94). When an individuals self confidence is lowered, the individual may experience prolonged stress which can cause damage to how that person lives his or her life. Confidence – the full trust; belief in the powers, trustworthiness, or reliability of a person or thing. The day I was handed my blue and black Babolat tennis racquet and was forced on the tennis court I knew it was where I belong. Every day I pick up my racquet and walk on the asphalt blue courts, I can’t help but to remember my days of glory- the days that were filled with screeches from my shoes sliding against the concrete.
