I identify myself as being someone that helps others to achieve their goals, sometimes overlooking my own goals to help them achieve theirs. In student affairs you have got to have a giving, helpful attitude to help students achieve their goals in education. In my day to day work I am always putting myself in the shoes of a student to see how I can best help them deal with the issues holding them back, or not allowing them to succeed in their academics. You have got to be an understanding person, most of these students are stressed out and may come at you in a negative way, you can’t take it personal. After reading the chapter on Bacxter Magolda’s self-authorship journey (Schuh, 2011), students are very dependent on instructors’ knowledge and …show more content…
Motivation is when a student comes up to you at graduation and says I got a job making 5 times more than I was making at McDonalds, and my family is so proud of me, that’s motivation. I can’t change the world but I can help make it a better place one student at a time. I have always been a people person, and working with new students’ every quarter is great. I believe for some people a college education is important, it helps get them ahead in a chosen career, in life, and socially. This country needs highly educated people to keep it running, not saying those that work serving food or pump gas aren’t important because they are. In all industry there needs to be CEO, managers, leaders, and business owners: college prepares these people to work in these positions. I am a very goal oriented type person; in my opinion I think if a person has no goals they have trouble getting through life. College helps people achieve their goals. Without higher education we would not have the technology we have, the medical advances, and many other things brought to us by very educated …show more content…
At the age of 38 it finally hit me what I wanted to do, it took going to college at that age for me to find myself and the career that I knew was for me. I started out thinking ok I should get my BS in Criminal Justice and be a cop, I got my BS but the cop thing did not happen, found out not many careers in my area for those with a BS in criminal Justice. During the time in going for my degree I was hired on by the college as a student worker, I was fortunate enough to work many aspects of a higher education center. I knew this is what I wanted but after graduation there were no positions available for me in the school, so I went on to work as an investigator for a Judge for 4-5 years. One day while working I couldn’t stop thin king about how nice it would be to work for the school again, lo and behold I got a call from the school that day asking me to come to work for them. I jumped at the chance to work for the school. They started me out as a Learning Resource manager, after 1 year I was moved into an administration position as a coordinator for our nursing program. I got hooked and never plan on doing anything but working for higher
The desire to further education is essential because it expands the mind of a person. College is implemented to attend a school for four plus years and hope to get a job after graduation. Without higher education there would not be any scientist or engineers in the world to continue to make society run smoother. However, it’s actually more than that, it creates long term friendship and builds independence.
Andrew Delbanco, a professor at Columbia University, wrote an essay regarding the question; does college still matters. Many students attend college to develop marketable skills in the workplace. Colleges use to be exclusively for the privileges and rich until the community colleges and online private colleges started competing with the traditional colleges
Right now in our society a college education is no longer an option or privilege, but rather a necessity. We are practically raised and conditioned to believe that one needs higher education in order to succeed in life. There is a saying that says "if you think education is expensive, try ignorance." But as technology is constantly advancing and computers are running almost anything, is a college education really necessary? There are people whom have never set foot in a college and are doing better than people who have their master's degree. There are views from both sides that contain a valid argument.
Every person has different life experiences that make their opinions of college and all related topics quite differentiated. In the end, the only right answer is what makes sense for their situation. For some, a college education is practical and it makes sense based on who they are, and what they are aiming to achieve. For others college simply is not in their plan, and we as a society need to realize that that an alternative path is just as useful and significant as a college education. In the end, the path one chooses is only up to the
Baxter Magolda’s defines her theory of self-authorship as “the capacity to internally define a coherent belief system and identity that coordinates engagement in mutual relations with the larger world (2004, p.xxii). However, my ideal definition of self-authorship is a lifelong process in which you discover your individuality in order to create an understanding of yourself and the relationship you have with others. It is the process in which we evaluate how to define ourselves through our values, beliefs, and views of the world. It is the breakthrough point in our lives where we utilize the information we have absorbed from our childhood to creating our own understanding to reevaluate our perspective of reality.
What is motivation? According to text, motivation is defined as a set of factors that activate, direct, and maintain behavior, usually toward a certain goal. Motivation is the energy that makes us do things: this is a result of our individual needs being satisfied so that we have inspiration to complete the mission. These needs vary from person to person as everybody has their individual needs to motivate themselves. Depending on how motivated we are, it may further determine the effort we put into our work and therefore increase the standard of the productivity. There have been a wide variety of theories about motivation developed over the years. Several are drive-reduction theory, arousal theory, psychosocial (both incentive and cognitive) theory, and Maslow’s H...
Motivation comes in all different forms, and it depends on how a person perceives it. Motivation can be anything, and affects each person differently. A person can have multiple ways of inspiration that encourage them to succeed. A person has to be at the right place in the right time, and it’s just a matter of finding it.
I learned that I am motivated in college by extrinsic goals, such as my family and friends. My second highest motivator would be task value. This is actually true for me. If I find a topic more interesting and understand it better and want to annex whatever it is I have assigned. I am extremely motivated by my performance.
A college education gives a person the opportunity to be successful in life, either financially or morally dependent on the goals that they set for their life. They will choose a college that offers programs for the major of their choice, where they will specialize and receive a degree. The decision to pursue a higher education will give the opportunity to earn a better income than someone who does not have a degree. College is more of a life preparation course that will help make sure a successful career. If a person pursues a career in engineering, physics or mathematics their curriculum would include more liberal art preparation courses, in order for them to earn their degree, so someone pursuing a degree in these types of careers should attend college for job preparation.
By getting a college degree, it helps to ensure that you are qualified for the job that you would like. For example, Andrew Delbanco writes in his article that a college degree is a minimum qualification for entry into the skilled labor market (Delbanco 506). Also David Leonhardt, a writer for the New York Times, wrote that the pay gap between college graduates and everyone else is higher than ever before according to an analysis of Labor Department statistics (Leonhardt). In addition, many adults believe that college is very important. An example of this is the cartoon on the right which helps to illustrate the importance of a college education using a comical dialogue. Delbanco also writes about the fact that a college education helps to raise the salary of the job. He writes that college graduates make more money (Delbanco 506). He also writes that a college education will help to shape Americans into educated citizens and can help citizens to contribute to society. He talks about this when he writes “College education provides an educated citizenry…College graduates should be able to understand the ideas and practices of democratic education”(Delbanco 507). College education also helps to provide for citizenship. Delbanco explains this when he writes “College helps people to enjoy their lives and opens their senses and minds to different experiences”(Delbanco 508). He writes about how when he first introduced this he did not emphasize as deeply what this meant he said it “plainly and passionately”(Deblanco 508). College education prepares students for their future by creating an educated group of citizens for our roles in
One of the many reasons why getting a college education is worth it is because there are more job opportunities. Most job now a days don't just require a high school diploma. A lot of employers are looking for people with degrees because they have more knowledge and will get the job done right. Between December 2007 and January 2010, jobs that required some one with a college degree grew by 187,000. Georgetown University calculated that by 2018 nearly 63% of jobs will require at least some college education. Finding a decent job is tough now a days, but having a college degree or at least some college education will make it a little easier. A degree may not necessarily guarantee a good high paying job, but the chances are a lot better with one (procon.org).
College education goes about the way to an effective future for people who are not kidding with it. Currently, a college education has turned in the base necessity in securing a job in different companies and although some people might think college is not worth the debt, in a long run it actually is.
It is easy to think college is not worth the cost to become better, but getting educated molds a better person, and creates happier people in the future and occasionally they become better in health (Leonhardt 25 ). Becoming a better and happier person is pleasing for everyone. Even former President Obama says “‘Education helps us be better people. It helps us be better citizens. You came to college to learn about the world and to engage with new ideas and to discover the things you're passionate about -- and maybe have a little fun’” (Procon.org). Learning and engaging in everything is a skill everyone should have, so like he said we should go to college to be able to do that. Additionally, education shows people to develop more intellectual skill and become more responsible (Pew Social and Demographic Trends). Thus said, being educated and smart is something everyone can do and college helps with that. Likewise, college can encourage someone to be more educated and happier. Reaching the point of happier and more educated is worth the cost.
Motivation is the general desire or willingness of someone to do something (Mariam Webster, 1947). In the beginning, the employees of Perfect Pizzeria were very motivated and willing to do whatever it takes to keep their job cause they knew in South Ville jobs where very much limited. The employees were mostly college students, with a few
College is a very important thing. If you go to college you will most likely get better pay in your career. Also, with a college degree, you have more opportunities. I believe that everyone should go to college. If you don’t go to college and just go into some job and that fails then you have no backup plan. A college graduate is more likely to be offered employment than another who didn’t attend college, if you have a college degree you will make more money in your lifetime than someone who doesn’t have a degree, if you are considering having children having a college degree is very beneficial to them, you have a higher chance of having better health yourself, college is very beneficial, and if you go to college you will have a better social
