I identify myself as being someone that helps others to achieve their goals, sometimes overlooking my own goals to help them achieve theirs. In student affairs you have got to have a giving, helpful attitude to help students achieve their goals in education. In my day to day work I am always putting myself in the shoes of a student to see how I can best help them deal with the issues holding them back, or not allowing them to succeed in their academics. Motivation is when a student comes up to you at graduation and says I got a job making 5 times more than I was making at McDonalds, and my family is so proud of me, that’s motivation. I can’t change the world but I can help make it a better place one student at a time. I have always been a people person, and working with new students’ every quarter is great. I believe for some people a college education is important, it helps get them ahead in a chosen career, in life, and socially. This country needs highly educated people to keep it running, not saying those that work serving food or pump gas aren’t important because they are. At the age of 38 it finally hit me what I wanted to do, it took going to college at that age for me to find myself and the career that I knew was for me. I started out thinking ok I should get my BS in Criminal Justice and be a cop, I got my BS but the cop thing did not happen, found out not many careers in my area for those with a BS in criminal Justice. During the time in going for my degree I was hired on by the college as a student worker, I was fortunate enough to work many aspects of a higher education center. I knew this is what I wanted but after graduation there were no positions available for me in the school, so I went on to work as an investigator for a Judge for 4-5 years.
