For a young girl to grow up in a world of prejudice, white supremacy, and understanding what life was like for colored individuals in the 1960s was difficult because she has not fallen out of her innocence, yet. Scout Finch is a confident seven-year-old girl because her father is an honorable and intelligent individual in Maycomb.
Her intelligence is apparent in the novel because she learns to read before she is enrolled in school. Scout gains her father’s confidence and uniqueness. Therefore, her confidence and intelligence makes her thoughts and is recognized to be concerned about an individual’s bad and good behavior towards each other.
Atticus has countless positive and negative characteristics, but there are two that stand out the most. The first character trait is that he acts a lot older than his age. Jem said that Atticus loved playing keep away and that he was never too tired, but when Jem went to tackle him, Atticus blurred out, “‘I am too old for that, son’” (Lee 118). Jem had never gotten that reaction from Atticus before. Atticus had to wear glasses, because without them he would not be able to see black on white with his left eye. It’s natural to follow Jem, her brother, when that is her only friend through out the years. Imagine hearing gossip about your father from friends, neighbors, and even your own cousin. To start, Scout isn’t able to see things from other people's points of view when she invites Walter Cunningham over for lunch on her first day of school and he pours molasses syrup all over his lunch. She isn’t able to realize that other people do things differently than she does. When she asks why he is doing this, Calpurnia scolds her for asking and tells her that some people just do things things differently. Since she is developing, she is able to realize that Boo Radley is actually a nice, caring person instead of a crazy, squirrel eating, monster. In the beginning of the book, Scout is worrying about her teacher’s teaching methods. In addition, Scout is worried about getting in trouble. However, towards the end of the book, Scout is tackling serious world issues. She contemplates how not everyone has the same opportunities. Furthermore, she worries about African Americans being treated unjustly on a daily basis. After the Tom Robinson trial, the whole Finch family is upset, but they leave it to young Scout to showcase her maturity. Scout shows maturity when she states, “Atticus had used every tool available to free men to save Tom Robinson, but in the secret courts of men’s hearts Atticus had no case. In the novel, To Kill a Mockingbird written by Harper Lee, Scout Finch believes everything she hears, so her memories could be wrong based on how she perceived everything as a child, making the reader think harder and deeper about situations. Scout narrates the entire story, giving us her opinions, interactions with people and explaining everything she believes. She is also only six years old, therefore most of her opinions and the way she perceives things could be completely wrong.
