What Is Sam Houston Heroism

Maya Angelou once said “I think a hero is any person really intent on making this a better place for all people”. Sam Houston showed the meaning of that quote in every action. Whether it was telling people to escape the alamo wanting friendship with the native Americans , or going against slavery he was filled with courage, and integrity for doing what he knows is right. He was filled with greatly needed determination that helped him get through everything he did. Houston believed in the act of heroism, and taking chances for the things you are strongly passionate for.

He proved to be a great hero by trying to warn the governor that they should abandon and destroy the alamo, but with no luck the governor took the other option. An opportunity

by James bowie, who won the attention of the governor by saying he would rather die than give up the cannon to the enemy. That decision cost many people’s lives, lives that could have been spared if only the governor listened. Sam houston was a hero by trying to save many lives, and choosing intelligence over pride the path many didn’t take. Everything he did was to survive the game of life we all play with the hopes and dreams we all create in it trying to make the world better for others.
Another way Houston acted like a hero was when he had very unpopular opinions, and stuck with them even if it would have got him killed. He liked the native americans, and believed they are people too which many Anglo Texans at the time went against him for. They sided with Mirabeau Lamar which wanted war with the native Americans. Many people like Lamar made fun of houston and called him “squaw man” because he married a cherokee. Sam houston had many people go against him yet though after everything he went through in life he some how had to go through another enemy, and another battle to fight.
Sam Houston might not of been strongly remembered for the other reasons, but showed true acts of heroism when he went up against the majority of his country to defeat slavery. He believed in a world without slavery, so he did everything in his will to fight for people’s rights. Houston knew a world separated slave states and free states would start wars between the two sides. He didn’t want fighting between them. Sam houston was one of the only two southern senators who voted against the popular sovereignty bill.
Houston was smart and full of courage for the things he believed in. He was a good husband, a great leader, but most of all a fantastic hero who felt strongly for all people he served. In conclusion, Sam Houston stuck up for the native americans, tried to save everyone in the alamo, and was strongly against slavery while many in the south were for slavery.
