Tony Buzan, is the creator of mind mapping and an expert on memory and the brain. In an interview conducted by Scholastic he stated, “Many think of memory as rote learning, a linear stuffing of the brain with facts, where understanding is irrelevant. When you teach it properly, with imagination and association, understanding becomes a part of it” (2011). In other words, it is important to make sure that students are not just remembering information just to pass the test, but remembering it in a way that they can use the information later on. Episodic memories is a form of explicit memories. These memories deal with events, experiences and contextual knowledge (Mastin 2010). It is important that in order for students to transform an experience into an episodic memory they have to experience it for themselves. A teacher can improve a student’s episodic memories by increasing their curiosity, motivation, and involving the students senses (Jensen 2005).
The third subgroup of memories is reflexive memories. Reflexive memories is an example of an implicit memory. Reflexive memory deals with the body’s natural reflexes and or when something is repeated (Jensen 2005). An example of a reflexive memory is when someone closes their eyes when a ball is thrown at them. Teacher work with reflexive memories when they use flashcards in the classroom and fill in the blank assessments.
The final subgroup of memories is procedural memories. Procedural memories are considered implicit memories. These memories deals with body movement (Jensen 2005). Examples of procedural memories are riding a bike, the order of events that occur in the classroom, the steps in performing a lab, etc. Procedural memories are important to incorporate in a classroom because these memories can be easy attained. When teaching, teachers can have their students write down their vocabulary words three times. Explicit memory is memory that we can recall consciously with our minds. Explicit memories are stored permanently in the neocortex after being processed by the hippocampus. These memories are divided in two different subcategories: Semantic Memory and Episodic Memory. Semantic memory can be described as universal knowledge. This can span from knowing the colors of fruits to knowing facts about animals. Episodic memories can be described as firsthand experiences. This can be anything from your first car or your wedding.
Human memory is flexible and prone to suggestion. “Human memory, while remarkable in many ways, does not operate like a video camera” (Walker, 2013). In fact, human memory is quite the opposite of a video camera; it can be greatly influenced and even often distorted by interactions with its surroundings (Walker, 2013). Memory is separated into three different phases. The first phase is acquisition, which is when information is first entered into memory or the perception of an event (Samaha, 2011). The next phase is retention. Retention is the process of storing information during the period of time between the event and the recollection of a piece of information from that event (Samaha, 2011). The last stage is retrieval. Retrieval is recalling stored information about an event with the purpose of making an identification of a person in that event (Samaha, 2011).
Definition of memory and it's functions is difficult to illustrate by a single sentence. Consequently we use several metaphors to describe memory implicitly. Our beliefs, perceptions and imagination influence memory. The fact gave rise to memory being described as a reconstructive process, explaining that memory is not an exact record of a particular experience. Instead we bring various components together and fill in the blanks with our predisposed schemas while recalling.

We usually form procedural memory at an early age when we start to learn how to talk or walk. Episodic memory is also a type of long-term memory. Memory is the tool we use to learn and think. We all use memory in our everyday lives. Memory is the mental faculty of retaining and recalling past experiences. We all reassure ourselves that our memories are accurate and precise. Many people believe that they would be able to remember anything from the event and the different features of the situation. Yet, people don’t realize the fact that the more you think about a situation the more likely the story will change. Our memories are not a camcorder or a camera. Our memory tends to be very selective and reconstructive.
The five types are Memory is classified by a few different characteristics. Declarative Memory is the memory of dates, historical facts, and telephone numbers (Silvia Cardoso). It is easier to build up Declarative Memory but can be easily forgotten as well. Procedural Memory is the memory/ability to drive a car, to play sports and tie shoes. This type of memory involves repetitive practices. The other of types of memory is Elaboration, Self Referent and Visual Imagery. Elaboration is known as memory associating with other information. Self Referent Memory is how it is made personally relevant. Then, there is Visual Imagery, which can be used in a few ways, one of which can be used to add richness to the material to be remembered.
Learning and memory are fascinating. The world could not function without either. They both are used in many different fashions in a wide variety of places. Learning and Memory have been carefully studied by professionals but are also well known and used by the common people on a daily basis. I am one of those common people, a student who is constantly learning and making the most of my memory. Since enrolling in The Psychology of Learning and Memory class I have come to the realization that I encounter situations in my life that exemplify the very concepts I have studied. I have also learned that it is beneficial to apply the lessons learned in class to my everyday life. Positive reinforcement, learned helplessness and serial recall are a few among many of the learning and memory models that have come to action in my life and in my final reflections surrounding the course.
In order to understand the functional relationship between learning and memory we have to first define what both learning and memory are. Learning can be described as “the acquisition of knowledge or skills through experience, practice, or study, or by being taught” (Merriam-Webster, 2014). “Memory is the means by which we draw on our past experiences in order to use this information in the present” (Sternberg, 1999). Base on this definitions one can conclude memory is essential part of our lives. Without any memory of the past, we would not be able to operate in the present or reminisce about the future. As we all know rats have been used in experimental mazes since at least the early 20th century. Hundreds if not thousands of studies have looked at how rats run different types of mazes, from T-maze, to radial arm mazes, and to water mazes. These maze studies help scientist study spatial learning and memory in rats. Maze studies helped us uncover general principles about learning that can be applied to several species, including mankind.
