What Is Pap's Role In Huckleberry Finn

Contrary to popular belief, parents aren’t infallible beings despite the fact that they’re the primary authoritative figure in our lives. Often times parents may be overly stern and authoritative whilst on the contrary they may seem distanced and abusive at times. There are certain qualities however that can determine the successfulness of a parent. In Huckleberry Finn, Huck is at odds with his two main parental figures being Widow Douglas and Pap. Neither is the ideal guardian to Huck, though the Widow is auspicious by virtue of her more responsible and competent demeanor.

In Chapter 5, Pap is seen to be envious and abusive towards Huck since he’s more accomplished and affluent than Pap ever was. "Don't you give me none o' your lip," says he. "You've put on considerable many frills since I been away. I'll take you down a peg before I get done with you. You're educated, too, they say—can read and write. You think you're better'n your father, now, don't you, because he can't? I'll take it out of you. Who told you you might meddle with such hifalut'n foolishness, hey?—who told you you could?" In the excerpt Pap was not only envious of Huck but covetous as well since he wanted what Huck had as well. An imperative value of good parenting is the ability to raise your children to surpass you however Pap displays a superior complex seeing that he wouldn’t allow his son to be more successful than he is. “Well, I'll learn her how to meddle. And looky here—you drop that school, you hear? I'll learn people to bring up a boy to put on airs over his own father and let on to be better'n what he is.” In addition to being spiteful towards Huck, Pap demonstrates his hardy demeanor whilst inside he covers his personal faux pas, not wanting others to know that he’s vulnerable.
