I was born September 28th 1984 to the parents of Vail D. Smith and Vicki Lynn Smith. My parents were married for 13 years when I breathed my first air. At the time of my birth, my oldest brother Adrian was 11 years old, and Shaun was 7 years old. Our community background was farming in the southeast corner of Idaho. Raised in this vacant land of country, everyone knew everybody as the population in our surrounding area was not more than a few thousand occupants. We thrived on Mormonism religion and had the same values of family oriented lifestyle as everyone in the community. According to Omi and Winant, the term race can be defined as “a concept which signifies and symbolizes social conflicts and interests by referring to different types of human bodies.” From their framework of racial formation and concept of racial projects, Omi and Winant asserts that race is a matter of social structure and cultural representation that has been intertwined to shape the nature of racism. Racism has been seen since the events of early English colonization of the indigenous people and the racialization of African Americans through slavery, all in which the United States is molded upon as a nation. Thus, this social structure of domination has caused European colonials and American revolutionists to create racialized representations, policies, and structures in order to oppress indigenous and black populations in their respective eras.
Race has no biological meaning. There is only one human race; there are no subspecies, no single defining characteristic, traits, or even gene, separates one “race” from another. Instead of being a biological concept, race is a social construct, and a relatively modern one at that. It was created to give light-skinned Europeans an advantage by making the white race superior and all others inferior. Throughout its history, the concept of race has served this purpose well.
I classify my race, ethnicity, and culture as a white, Irish-Italian- American, woman. My mother was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland and my paternal grandparents are from Sicily, Italy. I imagine being first generation Irish and second generation Italian helps me relate with my ethnicity.
The human species is made up of those who dared to immigrate to the rest of the world from Africa. Most of human ancestry dealt with migration by venturing into the unknown and eventually establishing a culture that begins to create social mores that the population begins to believe as fundamentally theirs and what their country represents. The majority always seems to have a mob rule in cultural etiquette. By comparing the concepts of ethnicity, nation and nationality I will cover the similarities and the differences that make up each of the given terms for a culture. Race and Ethnicity According to Anthropologists Examining the ideas and beliefs within ones own cultural context is central to the study of Anthropology. Issues of Race and Ethnicity dominate the academic discourses of various disciplines including the field of Anthropology. Race and Ethnicity are controversial terms that are defined and used by people in many different ways. This essay shall explore the ways in which Anthropologists make a distinction between race and ethnicity and how these distinctions serve as frames for cross-cultural comparison and analysis. It is important to accurately define these coined terms before one is able to make accurate comparisons and distinctions between them, and their relation to the concept of culture.
The word family has changed so much in the past century. A family back in the 1950’s was probably considered a husband, wife, and one or more children. Times have changed and families have become much different. The Interpersonal Communication: Relating to Others book defines family as a, “Unit made up of any number of persons who live in relationship with one another over time in a common living space who are usually, but not always, united by marriage and kinship” (Beebe, Beebe & Redmond, 243). Families can be broken up into five different types. The first is the traditional family, which includes a mother, father, and their biological children. Next, is the blended family which includes two adults and children, but because of divorce they may have children of other parents. Unfortunately, single-parent families are being seen more often. Extended families include parents, children, aunts, uncles, grandparents, cousins and any other close relatives. The extended families are commonly found in Asian and Hispanic cultures. The last category is the dual income parents without any kids. They are known as “dinks”.
My culture identity, as I know it as is African American. My culture can be seen in food, literature, religion, language, the community, family structure, the individual, music, dance, art, and could be summed up as the symbolic level. Symbolic, because faith plays a major role in our daily lives through song, prayer, praise and worship. When I’m happy I rely on my faith, same as when I’m sad, for I know things will get better as they have before.
Having a strong foundation is something that has been passed down from our ancestors post slavery, which was used to help my family form their ethnic identity as African Americans. Ethnicity refers to a social group’s distinct sense of belongingness as a result of common culture and descent (Organista, Marin, & Chun, 2010). This influenced my family to raise me with awareness of family structure, old fashion southern culture, and valuable beliefs that molded me into the woman that I am today. Along with my family’s ethnic identity, I also have my own self -identity, which is my identity as a mother and a student. In our education system there is a long list of factors that can have an impact on one’s racial and ethnic background. There are three of these factors which are Tracking, the lack of Mentors and, Achievement Gaps. Tracking is the separation in the Education system of students and their performance. Lacking mentors is the ability for children of lower income populations to receive extra help that mentors can provide. Achievement gaps are the huge gaps between the academic performance between African Americans and Hispanics compared to White/European Americans. These factors are just small in compared to the amount of problems total in the education system of America.
My dad died when I was twelve. In October of 2008, I was a normal ten year old, a fifth grader excited for Halloween. My mom worked at the Michael’s Arts and Crafts store on Robert C. Daniel Parkway and my dad was an Automotive Service Writer/Advisor for Sunbelt Nissan on Washington Road. My oldest brother Jeremy was in Delaware, his first duty station in the Air Force, while my middle brother Justin was still home. Justin had graduated from Evans High in May, and his Air Force basic training wouldn’t start until November. I loved my family the way every child does, with unending joy and compassion. I idolized my brothers, thought the top of the world was on my dad’s shoulders, and knew that my mom was the smartest person I’d ever met. I never once felt a shortage of happiness.
I was born on February 13th 2000 in Logan Utah. At a very young age my family moved to the island of Saipan, one of the Micronesian Islands, in the pacific ocean. My family did this due to the fact that my dad had found a job there as a doctor that he liked and my mother had served her mission on multiple Micronesian islands as well as Saipan. Sadly after a year my mom brought me back to Utah. This was the beginning of my parents divorce. The divorce was not official till I was four but they were separated by the time I was one. I was the youngest of four children. I grew and developed with the church in a split family. All I have ever known is separation. At the age of five I was introduced to two new parents. As the idiom says, “the apple didn’t fall from the tree” my identity is a direct creation of my family. Family has outlined my identity since the day I was born eighteen years ago. They have taught me their traditional beliefs and values, the same views that their parents taught them, whose parents taught them. When I hear, “the apple didn’t fall from the tree” I immediately think of myself and how I am a direct replica of my family because of traditions passed down from generation to generation. That is why the central point of my collage is a tree with pictures of my family members as apples, and a picture of me as the apple on the ground.
I was born in Spokane Washington and lived my first three years on a reservation with my mother and my father. When I was three I also started my modeling career until I was fourteen. When I was four my mother remarried and her husband she was with adopted me she was with him until I was five or six. The pieces I do remember from this time were not ones I care to speak about; they still haunt my dreams. I can tell you I was scared of him and still have a hard time speaking to him still today. When I was ten my mother moved me to Portland Oregon for a year. She then decided to move my sister and me to Southern Idaho to keep me out of trouble. She said Portland was no place for a soon to be teenager to grow up. Had she known then what she knows now I think she would have kept me in Portland. I do not remember a lot of the details of my life until I moved to the little town of Filer, located about 160 miles south of Boise Idaho.
