Throughout history, many writers have used this evil vice, devil-like characters in their writings. William Shakespeare is known for his many evil characters in his writing like Lady Macbeth, Macbeth, Claudius, Hamlet and Iago, Othello. In the book Othello, by William Shakespeare, he has one of his cruelest antagonists, Iago. Iago is a high, “honest” and very known man. He is solely determined to destroy Othello, out of random hatred and rumors. Shakespeare uses all this reason and plans to destroy Othello to prove that Iago is an evil being. Iago throughout the play has shown many characters that could classify him as a vice. In the book Othello Iago's intentions are to destroy Othello relationship with Desdemona, then destroy him as a person. Through manipulation and convincing Iago destroys Othello and makes him do things out of jealousy that end of him killing his love and then himself. Another example is “Now will I question Cassio of Bianca[..] He, when he hears of her, cannot refrain from the excess of laughter[...] As he shall smile Othello shall go mad and his unbookish jealousy must construe poor Cassio's smile.” (Othello Ⅳⅰ 90-100) Iago is speaking to the audience and himself and is plotting his plan and letting them know what his intentions are and characteristic of a vice is addressing the audience and Iago addresses the audience a few times throughout the play.
