What is hypnosis? Many doctors have tried to come up with a definition but they have yet to suffice everyone. There is multiple definitions and none seem to be enough. The most universal definition of hypnosis is “ the induction of a state of consciousness in which a person apparently loses the power of voluntary action and is highly responsive to suggestion or direction.” Some may believe that hypnosis is fake and is just what you would see on tv. People being hypnotized to do mediocre stuff like acting like an animal or make funny noises. This is totally wrong and has damaged the public image of hypnosis. Hypnosis is recognized as a valid medical procedure by the American Medical Association and the American Psychological Association. There …show more content…
Hypnotherapy is an advocate to help people break addictions by helping you regain control of your thoughts and actions ensuring you make the right choices, it also helps alleviate the physical symptoms of addiction. Personally, my friend Jack used to smoke over a pack of cigarettes a day. He wanted to quit but never could because will power is only temporary. One day he was researching ways to quit smoking and hypnosis came up. He eventually went to see the hypnotherapist and completely quit smoking cold turkey the same day. Also, it helps with weight loss and is thirty percent more effective than just dieting. Another advantage of hypnotherapy is helping cope with stress. Everyone gets stressed once in awhile, some more than others. During hypnotherapy you are put in a deep state of relaxation which helps your body …show more content…
It is almost unbelievable some of the pain people can withstand under hypnosis. All they do is get hypnotised and are completely awake and aware of everything that is going on. For instance, Alex Lenkei who is a professional hypnotherapist and psychotherapist had a surgery where the surgeon removed some bone at the base of his thumb and fused some joints together without any anesthetic! Alex was completely aware of what was going on during surgery and he felt no pain what so ever. It only took him roughly thirty seconds to induce himself into deep hypnosis. Hypnosis can be used for post operations as well to help the patient relax and have a more successful surgery. Hypnosis is also used during labor to aid mothers for a more natural birth. Lastly, they used hypnosis during the world war two when there was no anesthetic available. It also helped soldiers who suffered PTSD from the
In the novel Brave New World by Aldus Huxley, brainwashing was used in the form of hypnopaedia also know as sleep teaching. Hypnopaedia is similar to the form we use in modern television. Huxley uses hypnopaedia in the novel Brave New World to control the society’s thoughts. Modern television uses subliminal messages to tell the viewer when you see product A buy product B. Huxley used this in his book by using subliminal message to give the certain classes of humans purpose in life. The whole purpose of hypnopaedia is to have control over society’s thoughts.
Hypnosis can be defined as a form of highly focused concentration with relative suspension perplexed awareness used to lessen pain experience. (King.B, 2001) It can also be used alongside analgesics such as morphine. (Bamford.C, 2006) This paper will be discussing the effectiveness of its use to manage pain and related areas based on the benefits and limitations highlighted by various methodologies. These methodologies include decade long observations of case studies, testing on amputees and cancer patients whilst comparing use of pharmacological medicines to use of hypnosis itself. Some of the advantages of hypnosis include how it increases self efficacy by actively allowing patient to control pain symptoms, (Williamson.A, 2004) compliments and in some cases lessens the need to take pharmacological medicines. It lessens anxiety and depression in patients with chronic pain or terminal illnesses while enhancing the function of the immune system. (Liosso.C, 2001)All these benefits are however undermined by the process’s lack of effect on activity level or physical quality of life, (Liosso.C, 2001) the existence of individual differences in hypnotic responsibility and the fact that the effects of hypnosis achievable in non hypnotic social situation context (Brian.R.V, 2010). Nonetheless, just as the effectiveness of other methods of pain management varies due to issues such as genetic makeup, hypnosis is more effective on some individuals than it is on others. Case studies have proven its success on its own and in some cases combined with pharmacological medicine. It is therefore better to compliment what is already available than reject it due to its psychologically driven success aspect.

Hypnosis can play a useful role in medicine, dentistry and psychotherapy. Thus, it can be used to suppress the pain of the childbirth or of having one’s teeth drilled. It is also useful in reducing the nausea caused by the drugs used in chemotherapy for cancer.
Historically there have been many uses for hypnosis, as David Deegan describes. The most general is to relieve all types of physical pain. During hypnosis, many patients have described their physical pain as feeling closer to a warming sensation. Another use involves the treatment of diseases such as asthma and irritable colon. Hypnosis can also be used to control various impulses that can contribute to anorexia, obesity, chemical addictions, and sexual impulses. Finally, hypnosis can be used to treat phobias such as panic disorder and anxiety. It was widely used in this manner in WWI due to a shortage of psychiatrists, mostly for the treatment of physical pain, itching, anxiety, and the "restoring of repressed traumatic experiences which could them be dealt with and understood, helping soldiers come to terms with dreadful events" (Deegan). Coming to terms with traumatic events through hypnosis is a positive consequence of restoring memory.
In this style of induction the client is asked to imagine a relaxing scene. This can be a very personal vision, potentially tailored/suggested from using information from their timeline or from the initial consultation. The client is asked to imagine all of the sights, sounds, and sensations of the scene they have created. I would use this process of guided relaxation and guided imagery, that is essentially self made, for at home hypnosis. Once an individual has learned how to guide themselves to this ...
Although Science and Pseudoscience are evidently two completely different topics, what is considered to be classified as a Science or Pseudoscience is a controversy topic that’s still being debated today. While science builds and organizes knowledge in the form of testable explanations and predictions about the world through the scientific method, pseudoscience is a claim, belief or practice which is presented as science, but lacks support of evidence and cannot be reliably tested. Hypnosis is one topic several psychologists and those in the field of science are seemingly still debating today, in result to its several different uses. Although hypnosis is shown to work when dealing with certain phenomena’s like stress, there are several uses it is considered to be very ineffective and simply not a science.
For centuries hypnosis has been around, however many people till this day do not know much about it. Most still believe hypnotist carry around big clocks using them to swing back and forth in someone’s face, controlling their every action. As the one being hypnotized remains unaware as they proceed to act like a chicken with their head cut off. But for the most part, the truth is most hypnotists can be your average doctor, therapist, dentist, psychiatrists, and friend. It doesn’t take much to hypnosis someone as long as a deep state of relaxation is created, where the unconscious mind is “listening” and the conscious mind is “resting”. The meaning of “conscious and unconscious are really just shorthand terms to describe the general characteristics of the human mind. The “conscious mind” is the bit where we tend to “live” – the bit you might think as “you”. If there’s a little voice reading these words out loud in your head, that’s the conscious mind talking. The unconscious mind is everything else” ("About hypnosis"). In fact some doctors don’t use the word trance when describing the relaxed state because the person is very aware in their so-called unconscious mind. They feel that the word trance implies a different mind level or mental lapse and sends out the wrong idea to people who don’t know the subject.
Addiction is the result of a gradual accretion of neurological tendencies based upon the ingestion of a particular substance or the taking of a particular action. It is cumulative, building over time, and varies in strength from individual to individual based on their own abilities to exercise willpower over themselves and their actions. Some people become addicted more easily than others. In the end, addiction is the result of a series of choices made by the individual. These choices usually have a massive impact upon the life of the person, modifying their friendships, family life, professional life and psychological/spiritual well being. The cumulative aspect of addiction is built up by an individual willfully choosing to either not see the direction they are heading in or to not take action even though they sense themselves following the path of an addict. Some kind of deterioration in their life is bound to take place, and willful ignorance is all that could keep one from noticing that. Likewise, addiction can he helped and cured by an individual choosing to do something different, to adjust their habitual reliance on a specific substance or action for pleasure or escape or whatever quality they are searching for. Only the individual can make that choice, but once they have made that choice other people and institutions can help them.

There are however a few issues with this particular form of treatment. First, the individual can experience major relapse, the individual can also experience a withdrawal for the particular substance. Many times in therapy, individuals will pair another substance or activity to the old substance. For example, pairing chewing gum or a vape can help the individual slowly ease off of the substance and cravings, and slowly condition them back to a much more healthier lifestyle. Moreover, seeking therapists and clinicians for the lifestyle change is often recommended for those individuals. In addition to classical conditioning, operant conditioning can also play a huge role with the use of a drug. Furthermore, when an individual takes that drug or drinks that alcoholic beverage, overtime the pleasurable activity starts to become rewarding to the person, which soon develops into an addiction. Operant conditioning deals with the “rewarding behaviors” which are considered drugs and substances to some
The theory our learning team is studying is the psychodynamic approach or what is sometimes called psychoanalytic approach. The main contributors to Psychodynamic approaches was the founder Sigmund Freud (1859-1939), Anna Freud (1895-1982) gave significant contribution to the psychodynamics of adolescence and Erik Erickson (1902-1994) called the “new” Freud but with an emphasis on ego (conscious) forces, termed as psychosocial theory (Craig & Dunn, p 11-13). Psychodynamics is the explanation or interpretation (as of behavior or mental states) in terms of mental or emotional forces or processes (www.merriam-webster.com)
The fruit of the Spirit is self-control. As we follow the Spirit’s lead, He will give us the power to better control our own selves. Hypnosis involves the transfer of control away from ourselves to another person. Hypnosis leads to an altered state of consciousness in which the mind is very susceptible to outside suggestion. That susceptibility is what the hypnotist needs in order to modify the behavior of his subject. However, the word susceptible should concern us. Scripture says to be watchful and “self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour” (1 Peter 5:8). The hypnotist is not the only one who wants to modify our behavior; Satan also wants to do some modifying, and we should be wary of giving him any opportunity to make his

It is possible to control your mental and physical well being by controlling your thoughts and emotions. This is true for the following reasons. First, people can change the environment they are in and the people they are surrounded by in order to change their mood.
