Quitting A JobHistory of Hip Hop Throughout the human existence people have always made art to express themselves and convey a message. Whether it be from: performing arts, visual arts, or acoustic arts, one subgenre stands out to most, Music. This subgenre has an outstanding amount of different types of music. However, one type that has been exponentially growing with the growing culture is Hip Hop. As an aspiring music producer and an avid supporter of music, I've been introduced to this new wave of Hip Hop. As Hip Hop is nearing its fiftieth year since its creation and introduction into the music scene I will share with you How Hip Hop was created and what made it transcended into a worldwide phenomenon. Hip Hop (also known as RAP) was first created in South Bronx of New York City in the late 1960’s. First, many MC’s began forming Record labels and creating groups to elevate their public image. Secondly, DJ’s began doing solo careers and became producers of instrumentals for the MC’s to rap over. However, Hip Hop didn't only stop their, Rappers like Run DMC began experimenting by rapping over Rock instrumental and collaborating with Aerosmith creating numerous amount of rap subgenres inspired by the unlikely combination. Although many things have changed over the years two deaths changed the rap genre forever, the death of biggie smalls and tupac. Both were on the opposing ends of the rap radius. Biggie was part of the East America rap wave and Tupac was part of the West Coast Rap wave. Their deaths ended a 10 year Rap rivalry that was becoming hostile as many rappers prior were getting murdered. From the socio-economic struggles of 1970's New York, a new kind of subculture emerged, and from this, a new style of music known as Hip-hop. The rap group Run DMC pioneered to some extent the transformation of hip hop from an underground phenomenon to a genre recognised as mainstream and a significant aspect of pop-culture. Run DMC produced the first rap album to go tripple platinum and produced the first rap song to be featured on the 24 hour music channel, MTV. The groups became increasingly popular throughout the ninteen eighties and through their popularity , the style of the subculture they were representing was sold to the mainstream not only through Music, but other form of Media too.

The hip hop culture began in the suburbs of New York over 30 years ago and has gone through drastic changes over this time. Hip Hop contains four different elements including: graffiti, rap, disc jockey and break-dancing. In the 1970’s, musical artists began to express themselves like Kool DJ Herc. Rap music began to spread through the urban neighborhoods of New York City and people used a new form of expression that gave a chance to sing about anything.
Motown paved the way for future artists to explore themselves. It helped created the grounds of a great music and cultural integration in the 1970’s to now and hopefully forever. Since the early to mid 90’s, hip-hop has undergone changes that purists would consider degenerating to its culture. At the root of these changes is what has been called “commercial hip-hop". Commercial hip-hop has deteriorated what so many emcees in the 80’s tried to build- a culture of music, dance, creativity, and artistry that would give people not only something to bob their head to, but also an avenue to express themselves and deliver a positive message to their surroundings.
From its conception in the 1970's and throughout the 1980's, hip hop was a self-contained entity within the community that created it. This means that all the parameters set for the expression came from within the community and that it was meant for consumption by the community. Today, the audience is from outside of the community and doesn’t share the same experiences that drive the music. An artists’ success hinges on pleasing consumers, not the community. In today's world, it isn’t about music that rings true for those who share the artists' experiences, but instead, music that provides a dramatic illusion for those who will never share the experiences conveyed. This has radically changed the creative process of artists and the diversity of available music. Most notably, it has called in to question the future of hip hop.

The area’s mostly African American and Puerto Rican residents originated this uniquely American musical genre and culture that over the past four decades has developed into a global sensation impacting the formation of youth culture around the world. The South Bronx was a whirlpool of political, social, and economic upheaval in the years leading up to the inception of Hip-Hop. The early part of the 1970’s found many African American and Hispanic communities desperately seeking relief from the poverty, drug, and crime epidemics engulfing the gang dominated neighborhoods. Hip-Hop proved to be successful as both a creative outlet for expressing the struggles of life amidst the prevailing crime and violence as well as an enjoyable and cheap form of recreation.

The name hip-hop comes from one of the earliest phrases used in rap on the song “Rapper’s Delight” by Sugarhill Gang. “I said a hip hop, hippie to the hippie, the hip, hip a hop, and you don't stop, a rock it to the bang bang boogie, say, up jump the boogie, to the rhythm of the boogie, the beat.”. In addition to rap music, the hip-hop subculture also formed other methods of expression like break dancing, graffiti art, a unique slang vocabulary, and fashion sense.

The culture began to take its shape within the African American, Afro-Caribbean, and Latino communities. He brought forth a new sound system and the Jamaican style of “toasting.” Toasting was when Jamaicans would talk or rap over the music they played. Although created by black youth on the streets, hip hop's influence has become well received by a number of different races in this country. Because it has become the fastest growing music genre in the U.S., companies and corporate giants have used its appeal to capitalize on it. Although critics of rap music and hip hop seem to be fixated on the messages of sex, violence, and harsh language, this genre offers a new paradigm of what can be (Lewis, 1998.) The potential of this art form to mend ethnic relations is substantial. Hip hop has challenged the system in ways that have unified individuals across a rich ethnic spectrum. This art form was once considered a fad has kept going strong for more than three decades. Generations consisting of Blacks, Whites, Latinos, and Asians have grown up immersed in hip-hop. Hip hop represents a realignment of America?s cultural aesthetics. Rap songs deliver a message, again and again, to keep it real. It has influenced young people of all races to search for excitement, artistic fulfillment, and a sense of identity by exploring the black underclass (Foreman, 2002). Though it is music, many people do not realize that it is much more than that. Hip hop is a form of art and culture, style, and language, and extension of commerce, and for many, a natural means of living. The purpose of this paper is to examine hip hop and its effect on American culture. Different aspects of hip hop will also be examined to shed some light that helps readers to what hip hop actually is. In order to see hip hop as a cultural influence we need to take a look at its history.
