3.2.2 Environmental Pollution.
One of the greatest issues today that the entire globe is facing is environmental pollution, which is increasing every year and causing severe and irredeemable damage to the earth. The term environmental pollution is too broad with diverse meaning to different group of people or scholars, for example scientist, farmers and business men all have different meaning to environmental pollution.
Environmental pollution is any discharge of material or energy into water, land, or air which can cause short or long-term detriment to the ecological balance of the Earth or that lowers the quality of life. Pollutants or contaminants may lead to primary damages, with direct detectable impact on the environment, or secondary

That is, technological development have though very essential, have through the economic and social growth been to the expense of other areas of human life. The energy is directly interrupted in the atmospheric pollution that results from burning of lots of fossil fuels for transportation, domestic and industrial uses. It was not until 1960s that the issue of environmental air pollution was identified due to the emergence of western thought towards it. It should be noted that pollution in the western world is as a result industrialization but the case with the less developed countries including Nigeria is due to waste deposition facilities. Air pollution have been found to be the major issues influencing the environment with dangerous element. The remission of air pollution onto the atmosphere is basically as a result of human activities .I most case the natural pollutant are often more than human- made pollutants thought the result tends to be concentrated in cities where populations are working (Bolaji, …show more content…
They also proceed to say that household combustion devices, motor vehicles, industrial facilities and forest fires have been found to be the common sources of air pollution with major pollutants being the particulate matter, carbon monoxide, ozone, nitrogen dioxide and sulfur dioxide. Also some scholars have defined air pollution as the introduction of chemicals, particulate matter and biological materials which can cause damages to humans and other living organisms and also often cause lots of damages to the entire natural environment .It can also be defined as the presence in the outdoor and indoor atmosphere of one or more gaseous or particulate contaminants in quantities, characteristics and of duration such as to be injurious to human, plant or animal life or to property, or which unreasonably interferes with the comfortable enjoyment of life and property (
When we think of air pollution we think of the refineries in our cities and the exhaust coming from our cars mostly. In reality there are many more pollutants that we don't think about every day. The six most common air pollutants are; “Carbon monoxide, Nitrogen oxides, Sulphur oxides, Particulate matter, Volatile organic compounds, and Ground-level ozone (nitrogen oxide and Volatile organic compounds reaction)”(David Suzuki Foundation). The fact is people are dying from air pollution and we are doing nothing to make it better, in fact air pollution is getting worse.
Pollution is causing the destruction of environments and habits resulting in many adverse affects. The types of environments that are heavily damaged by pollution is normally freshwater ones. Polluting factors such as untreated sewage, mining waste, acid rain, fertilizers and pesticides
There are many kinds of air pollution. The ones I want to talk about are the ozone, acid rain, carbon monoxide and toxic air contaminants. Ozone is formed when hydrocarbons and nitrogen oxide react in sunlight. Therefore, ozone is at its peak during hot summer days. Exposure to high levels of ozone can have serious consequences on your health. It can cause respiratory disease, loss of pulmonary elasticity, and premature aging of our lungs. Next, is acid rain, which occurs in the atmosphere in the form of sulfur and nitrogen oxide. These pollutants can have serious damaging affects on aquatic, forest and wildlife ecosystems, as well as deterioration of buildings. Carbon monoxide is another form of pollution. It reduces the blood?s ability to carry oxygen. If a human is exposed to higher levels, it can cause chest pains, angina attacks or even death.
Air pollution is caused by many things such as car fumes, burning of fossil fuels,
Every day when looking out a window, people see a beautiful earth. The earth is intriguing, but hinges on a delicate balance. Many natural resources keep the grass green and the sky blue. Man has made quite an impression on our world, and has transformed the earth's resources into tools to make life easy. However, mans' manipulation on earth has become detrimental to the health of our planet and the safety of mankind. Through the use and production of resources such as oil and energy, man is gradually poisoning the earth. Pollution has become such a dilemma in society; there is no real control or a feasible solution to society's recklessness. Without complete change, our system will collapse. The earth will eventually retaliate with disaster, or corporate control of our economy will cause hysteria and depression. Evaluation of the consequences and repercussion of worldwide pollution, may give people a better idea of what the future holds.
What is air pollution? It basically is all of the contaminants that are in the air because of smog, carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide, monoxide, and all of these contaminants come from major pollutants. Air pollution is a big problem. In a questionnaire I asked twenty people if they thought that it is a big problem and all twenty responded with yes, that they do believe it’s a big problem (Chan). Air pollution can be solved from making or causing a greater damage in the near future. Cars and industries are the major components of air pollution because of all the carbon that they release into the air. As every day goes by we are inhaling all of this bad air, and it is slowly affecting all of us. Something should be done to solve this problem.
Air pollution according to the Wikipedia << is the introduction of particulates, biological materials, or other harmful materials into the Earth’s atmosphere, possibly causing disease, death to humans, damage to other living organisms such as food crops, or the natural or built environment>>. Therefore, human being should be aware of the facts that the environment and all living creatures are dying. They need to understand the importance of natural items, the nature, etc…
Air pollution takes place when the air contains gases, fumes dust, or odor in dangerous sums. That means the quantities that may be injurious to the health of humans as well as animals and or may lead to damage to plants and other materials. The elements that cause air pollution are known as pollutants. Pollutants that are thrusted into the air and directly contaminate the air are known as primary pollutants. Primary contaminant examples are carbon monoxide from car dissipates and sulfur dioxide from the burning of coal. Further contamination of air can arise if primary pollutants in the air go through chemical reaction. The resultant compounds are known as secondary pollutants. One of the examples of secondary pollutants
Air Pollution is when a poisonous or a harmful substance is released in the air. There are many form of pollution but air is one of them, it only occurs when dust, harmful gases or smoke enters into the atmosphere and makes it hard for species like plants, animals and humans to live in a difficult situation because of the dirty air.Air Pollution is classified in two sections, invisible air pollution and visible air pollution.. Hence any substance that makes it difficult for the living things that need the atmosphere is air pollution.Humans have been undergoing air pollution ever since the industrial revolution. In order to understand the causes of Air pollution, it is divided into divisions. Primary air pollutants and secondary air pollutants:
Efforts to improve the standard of living for humans--through the control of nature and the development of new products--have also resulted in the pollution, or contamination, of the environment. Much of the world's air, water, and land is now partially poisoned by chemical wastes. Some places have become uninhabitable. This pollution exposes people all around the globe to new risks from disease. Many species of plants and animals have become endangered or are now extinct. As a result of these developments, governments have passed laws to limit or reverse the threat of environmental pollution.
Pollution is the introduction of various contaminants into the natural environment such that it results in disorder and harm to the ecosystem, to include the living organisms in that specific ecosystem. Pollution can assume both chemical forms and energy forms. Pollution can also occur naturally, and there are man-made pollutants as well. Industrial pollution does the greatest damage to the natural environment. One popular historical occurrences of massive industrial pollution is the Great Smog of 1952 in London, making the Industrial Revolution as the triggering point of harmful industrial pollution as people know it today. The setting up of many factories burning fossil fuels for production has led to unprecedented levels of air pollution (Makarenko, 2007.) Also, factories which used to be situated beside bodies of water used to dump their industrial discharge onto these rivers, and this combined with untreated human waste has led to the pollution of the waterways in many countries.
What is pollution? Pollution is a detrimental enemy to all species that walk on earth. It is a product of mankind carbon foot print on the environment. It consists of chemicals or particles in the air that can harm the health of humans, animals, and plants. Pollution occurs when pollutants contaminate the natural surrounding; which brings about changes that affect our normal lifestyles adversely. Pollutants are the key elements of pollution which are generally waste materials of dissimilar forms. Pollution disturbs our ecosystem and the balance in the environment. With innovation and development in our lives pollution has reached its peaks; giving rise to global warming and human illness. When raw materials, water, energy and other resources
Air pollution is a type of pollution that can severely damage our environment as well as the earth’s atmosphere. Air pollution occurs all the time when the air contains many substances ...
Firstly, Air is the most essential source of life. Any creature can survive without only for a few minutes, so it must pure, clean and breathable. Air pollution means the presence of harmful substances that harm the human health in both short and long terms. Garbage, radioactive waste, wars, biological weapons and poisonous gases can pollute the environment that they live in. The problem of air pollution occurred after the World War 2. Oil, gas and the mass extension in the industrial developments have become another main cause.
Pollution is a massive problem that the earth faces. Pollution is the action or process of making land, water, air, etc…, dirty and not safe or suitable to use. Pollution of air, water, and soil are the most complex issues. Various types of gases and toxins that are released by industries
