The Shang Dynasty invented and, over the years, perfected the technique of casting a bronze vessel from a clay mold assembly, which this wine vessel has also been made from using those techniques (Cantor). While pottery from Ancient Greece shows cultural beliefs and practice of religion in Ancient Greece it also shows ways for archaeologists to be able to study chronology. Not only is some ancient pottery important to us, pottery was especially important to the Greeks as well. After all, the clay items were used everyday for storing food and drinks. There are many distinct qualities in the different shapes of pottery. Such as curving at the top (vases) or straight sides with a curved bottom so nothing could come out (cups). These include cups, plates, vases, jugs, and massive amphorae. The most common piece of pottery was the amphorae which was mainly used to store wine. This was because amphoras tended to be bigger in size after the potters had made them. Speaking of potters and making pottery it was actually really difficult to make pottery since it was such a long process.

Because of their potential toxicity, lead water pipes are no longer being installed. The greatest single use of lead metal today is in the plates of storage batteries for automobiles. The protective oxidation layer formed by lead in contact with such substances as air, sulfuric acid, and fluorine makes it highly resistant to corrosion. For this reason, lead has been used to make drainage pipes and lead chambers in sulfuric acid factories.
The U.S. Bureau of Mines categorizes clay into six groups: ball clay; bentonite; common clay and shale; fire clay; fuller's earth; and kaolin. Ball clay is a plastic, white-firing clay that has a high degree of strength as well as plasticity. Principal ball clay markets in 1992 were pottery, floor and wall tile, and sanitary ware. Bentonite is a clay composed mainly of smectite minerals. The three major uses of bentonite in 1992 were drilling mud, foundry sand, and iron ore pelletizing. Common clay and shale contain mixtures of differing proportions of clay, including illite, chlorite, kaolinite, and montmorillonite, plus other nonclay materials. The largest user of these clays is the structural clay products industry, which manufactures brick, drain tile, sewer pipe, conduit tile, glazed tile, and terra cotta. Fire clays can withstand very high temperatures and consist mainly of kaolinite. These clays are used in commercial refractory products such as firebrick and block. Fuller's earth, either the attapulgitetype or montmorillonite-type, is used in pet waste absorbents, oil and grease absorbents, and pesticide carriers.
Metals are currently in high demand by society. A high percentage of common everyday items you use and see utilises a form of metal. That wooden table in a common kitchen that looks like it is made completely of wood. Metals are still used in that "completely wooden table" as the screws used to hold it together are made of metals. Many commonly used metals such as iron, aluminium, and/or copper are all found from ores. An ore is a mixture in the form of a rock that is mined. For example, bauxite is an ore that contains a high percentage of pure aluminium. That pure aluminium is then extracted, refined, and crafted in to many everyday items such as cars, foil, and ladders. Chemists are continuously researching an innovative approach to extract and refine pure metals from ores while using fewer amounts of energy. Society's requirement of metals is increasing by the year as science and technology advances.
Most dielectric materials are solid. Examples include porcelain (ceramic), mica, glass, plastics, and the oxides of various metals. Some liquids and gases can serve as good dielectric materials. Dry air is an excellent dielectric, and is used in variable capacitors and some types of transmission lines. Distilled water is a fair dielectric. A vacuum is an exceptionally efficient dielectric.
There are two types of pottery; a bowl and decorative piece of clay. A bowl can only be done by a pottery wheel while decorative piece of clay are best done by hands. Whatever the choice you have made, just make sure create a hollow on the pottery and vent hole for air flow during firing.
