Was Ancient Athens Truly a Democracy?

First off, what exactly is a democracy? Democracy comes from the word “Demokratia”, which means “rule of the people”. So most democracies, if not all, are centered around the citizens of the nation.
Many characteristics of ancient Athens makes it democratic. First, their constitution favors the many over the few. They also have citizens that have a right to participate and vote in government. Their laws give equal justice to all citizens. Last, social class does not interfere with merit, and poverty doesn’t get in the way.
So, was ancient Athens a democracy? Some would argue that it isn’t, but I believe that it in fact is. It has many parts of it that makes it not one, but the proof that
