When I first begin working at the agency I did not understand why I was working there because I wanted to ultimately work with children. But instead of continuing with that way of thinking I opened my mind and my heart to this experience and it has honestly changed me. Through my course knowledge I have learned about different types of families. Also about different types of belief systems that each family may have. Every person in each family plays a unique part in the family household, some big or some small but they play a part. Through my courses I learned that it is up to us to help those who are in need. Even though I thought that working with kids it has nothing to do with this, but it has everything to do with families and family systems.
Although I was not homeless I lived in a home with no lights for a whole semester of school. Sometimes I did not have the coolest new gear and name brand clothes, and was bullied for a period in my life. So even through my life story may not have been as severe of a story as some of the families but I could relate because I know what it means to go without. Also I know that as a child because all you know is the other kids have it and you do not. I just know that though your issues are hard it will defiantly get better. Through my experiences in life I learned to push and never give up on your dreams. The most important thing I learned was believe in those who sacrifice for you and never stop believing that one day it will get better because indeed it will get better.
I feel as if my knowledge and my experiences will help the agency to become more relatable. I want them to understand that we all have been through things and sometimes needed assistance to get out. Some situation may have been extreme and without the help of other some situations we would still be in. I believe the new staff that they are bringing in will allow the new experiences to come about and the new understanding for the clients. This has been a great experience and with open hearts and open minds I believe that they can accomplish what they set their minds to. It all comes with hard work and
Homelessness can result from children running away, being abandoned by parents, extreme poverty within the family and/or unsafe/unstable living conditions. Being in situations where a child has worry about where they are going to sleep or where there next meal may come from gives them little time, if any, to focus or even think about attending school. In addition, attending school means a need for the upkeep of personal hygiene, having clean clothes and most importantly transportation to and from school, which can add more stress to a child outside of the fact they are homeless. Not having these things causes high levels of depression, anxiety and low self-esteem. Th...
Culture expresses itself in many ways, shapes, and forms. Many of these are interconnected to everyday life, and just as many are unnoticeable if one does not know where to look. Each culture has their own deeply ingrained set of rules and social requirements; this includes a moral code. The Dou Donggo people are an example of separate morality in motion – existing side by side with an outsider legal system, with a different standard of morality, and different standard of ideals to go with it.
There are several populations that interest me however possible preferences include families that deal with domestic abuse and those who are disabled. Working with families that have experienced domestic violence is an interest because in the past I had friends whose family was dealing domestic violence and the impact could clearly in all members of the family. Seeing the difference that was made by those who worked to help their family made this population a preference. Another population that is a possible preference is are those who are disabled. The interest to help those who were disabled started when a faculty called Edelweiss opened. Up to that point there had been no interaction with those who lead different lives than myself. Through the year that was spent volunteering the changes in those that had lessons became obvious. Being able to see the achievements of those who had lessons made it a continued interest. In the past couple of years a new side of this interest was shown. There is someone that is a close friend who is disabled because of seizures who has had trouble with employers. Seeing how she has been treated made it even clearer that this population needs help and has made it a continued interest professionally and personally.
Kris became a social worker because she has a passion and needs to help people. Her passion comes from years of abuse and neglect when she was younger. She stated, “It feels right to be a social worker. Although there is no thank you cards and the work may be meticulous at times, seeing smiles is a great reward”. I have learned most social workers enter this career due to personal experiences and they were to help make a change. I am one of them. Although I know I cannot change the world, I know I can make a difference in the lives I touch. I too will find the smiles of my clients
Family is a group of people like parents, children, siblings, grandparents, grandchildren uncles, aunts, nephews, nieces, cousins, spouses, siblings in law, parents in law and children in law. Who are considered to be related in some way such as by blood, by common ancestry, by descent or by marriage. There are two types of families, the nuclear and the extended family.
...ome, or they lost their employment, or they fell ill, perhaps a combination of all three that led to a life of homelessness. In the state the world is in today, it is necessary that people should not be quick to judge, but quick to lend a helping hand. The government and volunteer agencies do a lot to help but not all are so fortunate. In one way or another everyone is struggling financially, and if it is not resolved soon, more people than ever might be heading down the path of homelessness. In the meantime it is indispensable to support charities in donations or volunteer some time for the shelters dedicated to those without a home. People should place themselves in the position of a homeless, and see how appreciative one would be for shelter, warm covers and a hot meal in a time of need. For in the long run, the words of the many must echo the words of the few.
I enjoyed this experience so much, that I decided to go back to volunteer for Change Point, and will be going there once a week. This experience had the impact it did because I got to connect with the community in which change Point serves and help assist others. By doing this, I gained hands-on experience in which will help me in my future career. I also was able to enhance my skills in being a leader and in communication. The parenting classes that I taught to others not only helped them but also helped me.
Working with the clients at Silver Saddle, facilitating anger management group and being able to identify the clients needs have been the greatest experience that has had a large impact on my learning. Working with clients helped me set a professional standpoint while maintain healthy boundaries with my clients, which is something I struggled with because I wanted to be more like a mom to the clients. Talking with my field instructor helped me establish more clear boundaries, which is something that’s very import as a social worker so this impacted my learning. Having the ability to address my client’s needs while co-facilitating
I came into this class not really knowing any more then people can get insurance and money for food from the human service department. My eyes were definitely opened those first couple weeks of class. I have realized that there is so much more that a human services worker can do. I also learned that most people who use the services are truly desperate and need help. I have learned a lot about seeing the big picture and not just what’s in front of me.
Almost every minivan has the stick-figure family in the bottom left corner on the back window that shows their family. Yet, it seems that every family consist of a father, mother, kids, and maybe a pet or two. One virtually never sees any variation of a ‘family’. The two men with the adopted daughter, the single mother with a handful of kids, and the lone college student with her dog. An image of a family is limited in the current mindset; it is the average family that is seen when the term is spoken, never the true form of family. The idea of what a family is can be wildly debated and may never come to a true agreement, yet the answer lies in front of each individual, if only they are willing to open their mind and grasp the concept. The definition of family is as
Family may seem like a simple concept, but there is no simple definition of family. In common words, a family is a group of individuals who share a genetic bond. But in other cases family doesn't only have to share a genetic bond because we have some friends that we consider family. People who live together with a special bond which is love is family. Family stands for responsibility, trust, sacrifice and hope. Family don't just share with you just the happy moments but they're with you through thick and thin. They share laughter, sadness, loss, happiness, and success together. Family structure helps to carry their culture to the next generation. The meaning of family changes with the natural and economic conditions. The real meaning of family is a lot more complicated in today’s world. It's no longer easy in our society.
In society today, we are working with families and children are more diverse than ever. We are servicing families and children from so many different traditions, beliefs and values. Every family has their own stories. We will find that families and children
What is family? Each person defines family according to what family means to him/her. The concept of family means various things to different people, yet the meaning of the word can bring different emotions to the person who hears it. But no one is born into this life alone. Everyone has known the bond of family, at least at birth, and for many it is a bond that can last life long time.
Family, one word with so many definitions, but what truly defines what a family is? The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines family as the following, a group of individuals living under one roof and usually under one head. I like this definition of family because it says nothing about a family being related by blood, but that they are individuals. Personally think that blood doesn’t make you family, being provided and cared for and properly taken care of and loved makes you family. Not all families are blood related, there’s families that have adopted kids, families that have no kids, families that consist of two people and a pet or two. There is no rule that states all families have to have a mother, father, and children. Every family differs
Interacting with others, in the context of a social institution, is a common phenomenon that takes place every day. Through this socialization, members within society interact and learn about what is expected of them. These social expectations are most commonly communicated through socialization agents, such as the family, media, peers, and religion. To start, the family is one of the social institutions that each individual is born into. By interacting with parents, and maybe even brother and sisters, a baby begins to understand what behavior is and is not normal and expectable. Through the influence of family members and the individual 's interaction with others in society, the individual begins to form his/her own views and beliefs. This view of the family is known as the functionalist theory. When considering whether different age groups agree that it is best for a family if the man is the money maker and the woman takes care of the home and family, it is crucial
