What I’ve Learned
School is a typical natural notion for any child living in the United States with every state have multiple public schools for any person to attend to private school for ones who have more money than the typical person. With so many different options for education, people know the concept of how a school works starting from kindergarten advancing to the next grade if they have passed all the requirements. With this elementary school, maybe not at the time, is considered to be the easier school years. From this, I would have never seen myself taking a class which allows me not only just have a better understanding of myself, and learning habits that I should break; but, new methods to help me in my future college courses.
Starting from day one, we learned what we should do during the first three days of class this is what made me feel confident during the class since I realized I had done everything recommended during my previous years; and, what I will continue doing in my future courses. Within the following classes, it was interesting to learn how to actually be productive in a beneficial method. SUch as the saying that has been stuck in my head from the class, “ For ever how long the class is a day you must study double” this has stayed in my mind since I never really knew an exact time of which is a productive amount to study. The deaths per year done by guns, 80% of them are gang related. If I Grow Up, written by Todd Strasser shows the life of a male kid growing up in the projects in Chicago. DeShawn wanted didn’t want to join the gang and stay in school. But his family didn’t have money or food. His friend that was in the gang had a bunch of money. So DeShawn joined the gang because in school they didn’t teach them much, and the money that his family got was a lot more of it when he got in the gang. I think that DeShawn had a choice not to join the gang because he could get a job, could have gotten a better education, and other people have gotten out of the projects.
Many Americans do not question the credibility of the education system within the country because they believe it forms good citizens and creates a stepping-stone to success. John Taylor Gatto is an American teacher who has experience in the classroom for thirty years and has now devoted his life to critiquing American schools exploiting his own experiences. In his essay “Against School”, he argues that the 12-year system of school may not be necessary, due to its curriculum, and that it may be a tactic of manipulation from the government to promote obedience. I agree with his argument because there are many paths to individual success outside of public education, such as homeschooling or vocational school.
The story I chose for this analysis is “Why, you reckon?” by Langston Hughes. IN this analysis I will be focusing on how the great depression in Harlem had effect on the story, how racism played a part, and how or if the characters were justifyied in their actions. During this time period the intense racial divide combined with the economic harships that plagued the U.S. during the 1923’s makes for an interesting story that makes you think if the charaters were really justified.
Now that public schools were commonplace in America, they needed to be altered to increase knowledge of students leaving them. Through reforms and political events, schools became not only a place for learning math and English, but also a place to learn other skills that will help students obtain jobs once they graduate. School was becoming essential rather than optional.
We live in a society where we are surrounded by people telling us that school/education and being educated is the only way to succeed. However, the school system is not up to the standards we want it to uphold. There are three issues we discuss the most which are the government, the student, and the teacher. In John Taylor Gatto 's essay “Against School”, we see the inside perspective of the educational system from the view of a teacher. In “I Just Wanna Be Average”, an essay written by Mike Rose, we hear a student 's experience of being in a vocational class in the lower level class in the educational system when he was supposed to be in the higher class.
When looking at not just this class but all of my classes and looking at how I have been approaching them versus how I should approach them it definitely puts my mind in a different perspective because I am a person that “strives for excellence” and if I am able to “ace” a class then I definitely try and do that but a lot of the time that doesn’t mean sitting there and actually learning the information it means
Many children begin school at the ages of 5 or 6, the age when a child enters kindergarten. However, children?s learning capabilities are at there peak at earlier ages than that. Alison Gopnik, a professor of psychology at the University of California at Berkeley says, ?Children learn more in their early years than they ever will again. With the dissolution of the extended family, the best way to support early learning is with publicly funded pre-K? (Starr, 2002). Their brains are more primed to learn and will absorb more information earlier in life. Therefore the earlier children begin their education, the better. It is through these programs that the children learn proper etiquettes when dealing with teachers and fellow students. ?Children who attend well-planned, high quality programs?tend to learn more and are better prepared to successfully master the complex demands of formal schooling,? says one government commissioned review of research on early childhood education (Ruben, 2000/2001).

When a person is young it is mainly their parents responsibility to raise them right. Raising them correctly will help them make good choices as they get older. Putting children through the right amount of education will also impact the person they become as they get older. “Programs at one stage or age may or may not prepare students for later experiences. Ideally, the learning situation in preschool will foster independence and child-initiated activities.” (Slavin). School has a big impact on a person and who they will become. One important aspect of any person’s life is their education. Children start with their education as early as the age of three. They are put into some form of schooling. The general pattern of schooling for all children is preschool, elementary school, middle school, highschool, and some may choose to go on to college. Each level of schooling is very important for its own particular reasons. The entire education process plays a vital role in each individual’s life.
It worked for me to an extinct like I had to basically form an alliance or network of people who were in my classes to get myself to stay focused and sometimes help them stay focused. I used to think i needed a small pill in order to get through a tough test or stay up all night cramming all the information I need for the test the next day. But I learned if instead of cramming i studied at the library for an hour a day I would do a lot better than cramming. Although we have spended a handful of nights staying up till studying and going over our study guides. In my opinion the skills we learned in this course are skills we will know and use for years to
I understand my styles and behaviors better now. Too bad I didn’t take this course earlier in life. Understanding myself will help me understand other people better I believe. That will be helpful concidering the profession I intend to have.
At the beginning of one’s journey of gaining more knowledge, most children don’t mind school, for it is a change of environment for them. The majority of elementary school adolescents even enjoy school to some degree. As time wears on, we usually, and sadly, begin to see a change of heart. Children become fatigued from school and therefore don’t take pleasure in going anymore. Maybe their teachers didn’t teach them in the way that they learn most efficiently, or maybe students just become bored with the whole “school scene” itself. Whatever the case, it is apparent that by the time they reach high school, their interest for learning alone has died out.
I have learned a lot about myself in this class, and through writing this paper. I have come to the bluntly honest truth about myself that is sometimes hard for me to succumb to. I think now being consciously aware of how I am and why I am the way I am will help me to continue to strive for better and continue to learn about
After twelve years of school, it took me until now to figure out exactly why I had been there all those years. It was not to torture me by making me learn how to spell but to make sure that my classmates and I got the opportunity to make the most of ourselves. Opportunity that would come from learning as much as possible from books and beginning to see that the world focuses on more than just history and English . I owe my success in life and school to teachers who taught me to spell and to be respectful and responsible. Those quick to argue with me say that school's usefulness is shallow: deeper-real-life experiences truly educate a person. School should be seen not only as a place to study, but also as a place to learn about real life. People cannot depend on experience alone for education just as they cannot solely rely on information from school books to prepare them for life. The lessons, whether from a book or not, learned in school transcend the classroom to real life situations.
