Throughout this semester in the Introduction to Academic Research course, I learned a great deal about research. We covered a wide variety of topics that encompassed topics such as methods of field research, the unknowns when conducting research (the Black Box activity), the differences that exist among fields when using the word “research”, and many others. I’ll begin with what I learned about myself. Throughout this course, I learned a great deal about my future interests and the characteristics I exhibit when participating in a group project. When working with Rob Geis and Martin Castro, I searched constantly and relentlessly through the CIA database to find any information relevant to our project and the argument we wished to make. Certainly when dealing with a History project, this is strength. It takes a great deal of time to sift through the necessary amount of information to make a sound conclusion. However, when deadlines are firm and very near, this type of research method is very time consuming and could result in an unfinished or inappropriately approached end product. I also found that in the course of the project I was attempting to micromanage certainly elements of the project. For example, Sam had trouble finishing his part of the PowerPoint because his Mac didn’t have office. I texted him a few times within a few days to see if he had finished his portion. During the final rehearsal, I asked both Drew and Sam to re-word things simply because I didn’t like the way they sounded or felt they weren’t serving their necessary purpose. Sometimes this type of person is needed in a group in order to help perform quality control. This type of behavior reflects my behavior and value in a group project. However, the originality lies within the collection of these facts and examining how underlying factors connect said events and cause a chain of events that lead to a present point. I feel like the program would be more successful if the classes were divided by potential majors. Each student interested would be assigned to a group of students within the same discipline and an advisor in said discipline. The group would function in the same manner our current Honor’s class does and a completed project would be the end goal. For those who are undeclared, an inter-disciplinary professor would be assigned to those individuals. I feel like this would be a better direction for the program in the future for all involved.

When working on a group project there are certain skills that are required to make sure that the tasks are being carried out smoothly. With that in mind, it is critical to keep an open line of communication along with a certain level of understanding of the other individuals in the group. The following scenario is of a group project I was a part of that had a breakdown in the two points expressed above.

In this stage the students that will be working together on a group project are meeting and greeting each other. This stage is very important, because it allows the students to get to know each other by sharing their past experiences, what they are good at, and, perhaps, what they aren’t so good at. This is a good time to set up a schedule for meetings and deadlines that every member on the team is able to maintain. This schedule should accommodate each member’s time schedule, and focus on completing the various project goals. At this stage the student who is designated team leader should give guidance to the team and help them figure out their own roles within the team based on their skills and the requirements of the project. The term ‘Research’ can consist of different meanings, research enquires can be defined as; a methodical, formal and precise process employed to gain solutions to problems and to discover and interpret new facts and relationships (Waltz and Bausell 1981). The goals of research are to formulate questions and aim to find the answers. Gall, et al. (1996) explain how the immediate goals of research may be categorised as exploration, description, prediction, explanation and action, where they provide a strategy for figuring out which questions to ask and how to find the answers. Researchers can decide the type of research they want to carry out according to which methods would suit their research (Johnson,.et al. 2007)

Working in groups is challenging at times. Other times it is very rewarding. We are so focused on life that we do not take time to reflect on things as much as we should. Being in a Groups class has opened my eyes to a whole new world. I have begun to question, explore, and even understand how things work. I even get how they work sometimes. Not only is there a process involved in making individual decisions, process is involved in group decisions as well. This paper attempts give insight into my reflection of my group decision process.
Research philosophy, refers to the development of knowledge adopted by the researchers in their research (Saunders, Lewis and Thornhill, 2009). In other words, it is the theory that used to direct the researcher for conducting the procedure of research design, research strategy, questionnaire design and sampling (Malhotra, 2009). It is very important to have a clear understanding of the research philosophy so that we could examine the assumptions about the way we view the world, which are contained in the research philosophy we choose, knowing that whether they are appropriate or not (Saunders, Lewis and Thornhill, 2009). According to Saunders, Lewis and Thornhill (2009), three major ways of thinking about research philosophy are examined: ontology, epistemology and axiology. Each of them carries significant differences which will have an impact on the way we consider the research procedures. Ontology, “is concerned with nature of reality”, while epistemology “concerns what constitutes acceptable knowledge in a field of study and axiology “studies judgements about value” (Saunders, Lewis and Thornhill, 2009, p110, p112, p116). This study is intent on creating some “facts” from objective evaluations which are made by the subjects. Therefore, epistemology will be chosen for this study as the way of thinking about the research philosophy.
