Step 4: Idea #8- Become a questioner. I find that engaging myself in class and the lectures help me to become more aware of the information that I am learning. Furthermore, I like to ask questions about things I do not know or understand. Being a questioner really helped me during Microbiology because there was a bunch of information that made me confused. For example, when we were doing lab experiments and we had to do specific tests. I had to ask numerous questions to make sure that I understood what I needed to do and what the expected outcomes could possibly be.
Idea# 9- Relate content to situations in your life. Therefore, for me to have a better grasp on Micro, I needed to relate the content to my life. Also, we could pick our own projects for this class which also made it easier to relate the content to my life. When you relate and apply the content, you retain and learn the information better than if you just try to memorize it. Furthermore, when I become interested in the content, it also makes it easier to apply and learn.

Idea# 10- Figuring out study skills and learning habits.
I find this helpful in all classes that I take. Not all teachers teach in the same way, therefore, I need to figure out my studying skills for every teacher I have. In Micro class, I figured out that I needed to pay attention to the material that was covered in the lab, and the class assignments. When I was studying I focused on these two parts of class the most. Of course, I would still reread the PowerPoints and all my class notes. Furthermore, note taking was an extremely important part of this class. I would rewrite my notes so that I was able to have a better understanding of the
material. Idea#11- Can I explain this to someone else well enough? I ask myself this all the time. Thankfully my tablemates helped me with this greatly. My tablemates were constantly asking me what was going on and if I understood anything he just said. I was the mother hen of my table, making sure everyone understood the information and completed all the work that needed to be done. Of course, I am the one who asks questions to make sure that I fully understand. Then when I understand, I can relay the information when someone asks me. Idea# 13- Ask questions to fill in missing pieces. Asking questions is extremely important to my learning and developing as a person. When I don’t know something, I ask questions to become more familiar. In Microbiology, I had to ask a lot of questions to make sure that I fully understood the content that was being presented. I also find by asking questions it makes the material easier to apply.
In Toni Cade Bambara’s short story “The Lesson” there is no hiding what she intended to portray to the audience, the fact that there is a huge gap between the lower class citizens and the higher class citizens. This becomes apparent during one of Miss Moore’s infamous outings with the kids when she takes them to FAO Schwartz in Manhattan to teach them about money. Through this outing with Miss Moore the children realize that their way of life is far different than of those in Manhattan and that they belong to a different class of people altogether.
Living in one of the wealthiest countries in the world, our culture has naturally valued prestige and luxuries. We admire fancy items and often judge other individuals by the clothes they wear, the car they drive, and the schools that they attend. The “American Dream” serves as a motivational factor for people; believing that hard work and dedication can bring “success” to ones’ life. Although this is partially true, it is difficult for individuals in the middle class and lower class.
The Grapes of Wrath, by John Steinbeck, has many social class conflicts presented in the book. The main thing that Steinbeck concentrates on is the fact that if a man had land he had a name, he had a purpose. Though some men in the 1930’s were living in poverty and having to struggle to provide for their family, they still had a place, their land kept them grounded, they didn’t feel like they were ultimately losing everything. Steinbeck tells a story about a family that got their land taken away from them and their struggle to continue on with their lives.

There are many similarities and differences between the upper-class, middle-class, working-class, mixed income and low-income urban neighborhoods. There are many different social distinctions within each class and each class has their own way of living. Here are some of the difference and similarities between each class:

The past few months in this course have been a rewarding and memorable learning experience. Some of these lessons I will carry with me for the rest of my life. I feel more prepared to face society and the people in it head on in my pursuit of a better future. I can begin to answer the essential questions of how society really works, our place in history, and who will prevail. As I further my educational and career goals I will be equipped with an arsenal of facts and a new way of thinking that I can incorporate into everything I do. The sociological perspective, is this a new lens to view the world through. Which has enabled me to see how the larger problems of the world affect me and how I in turn affect them, giving me the ability to predict the direction of the world and make smarter choices with a greater degree of accuracy is which is always an in demand skill.
The socio-economic status and class division of society has greatly influenced everyday life in North America. Once designated a certain socio-economic status, it is very difficult to move freely in-between the classes. “The lower class typically encompasses a wide variety of class identities, from working class (blue collar) to working poor to unemployed.” This class is seen as the foundation of the social ladder, the bottom of society. Many people in this class work either minimum wage jobs or labor jobs.
This week in class we dealt with the subject of varying types of social structures. To start there are open and closed systems. An open systems allows for an individual to move up or down in society where as the closed system allows for no mobility. The only closed system I am familiar with is the caste system in India. In a closed social system you are born into your class and that is the same one you will grow up in. While discussing this subject it would be helpful to define class in the manner we did as a group: class, in this context, is unequal access to economic resources, power, and prestige. In contrast to a class system an egalitarian system has equal access to these aspects of living. A rank system only has unequal access to prestige and, as discussed in class, is seen in Pacific Islanders, and some Native Americans in the North and Southwest. Although the US social system is open we tend to stay in the same class. It is said that the head of the household dictates the class. Many problems in this country circulate around the problem that there is very little mobility in class in the United States however, in Japan, Italy, and Germany there is even less mobility. At first one may feel it is less of a problem in the United States yet, I disagree. In the sense of social structure I do not think you can really compare two separate nations and draw conclusions about one based on the other because there are too many factors that make up a society. Social history, dispersion of race as well as religion, and the difference between the classes all need to be taken into great consideration. Even though I am not very familiar with the European social structure I do know that in America there is an enormous gap between upper, middle and lower classes. The top 1% of our economic bracket controls a little under 50% of the money in America. That fact is amazing to me and I found it in a document named “People like us: Social class in America” by, Paul Fussel.
Social class has a large effect on the lifestyles of all Americans. But what does it really mean to be a part of the lower, middle or upper class? These divisions of social class are defined by aspects such as family income and lifestyle; however, education plays a large role in determining ones social class. That does not mean that it will determine success in ones life but to interpret, many people with a further education usually have a higher income as well. Those of the upper class have higher standards for education and career aspirations in contrast to those of the lower and middle class. Besides the differentiation of aspirations of the individuals of each social class, it is also used to determine who will go to college, depending on who can afford it or have no other priorities that can get in the way.
I also learned from discussing with my teacher who went to university for chemistry how to use certain pieces of equipment and also how to improve in what i'm doing, I found this important as this expand and help my knowing and my knowledge. I must say as well I did not realise how important it was as well to make sure that the area that I was working in was clean. Now understanding that having glassware left right and center scattered on the desk and everything untidy really does not work in my favour and leads to incidents and possible wrong results and other things. When I first started I did as possibly stated above have any past experience with anything in which we were going to do with ended with tme having to lean new things which needed concentration and listening which I did but not as good as I should have. I think that a lot more focus and listening would have been more beneficial and could have ended with fewer mistakes and
When FITing your learning patterns you are supposed to forge those areas you avoid, intensify the areas you are use as needed in, and tether your use first areas. Since I am use as needed for all the learning patterns I have been working on intensifying each pattern to strengthen my use in each area. I have been practicing self-regulation all throughout this course. After learning my patterns, I realized why I had been unsuccessful before in college. I realized that although I am use as needed for all of my patterns that there are certain areas where I need improvement. For example, I can intensify my sequence my creating better study habits by setting aside specific times and dates that will focus solely on school where I will have no distractions. I have also practiced using a word wall to figure out what each task is asking of me and which pattern I need to use to be successful. I plan to use self-regulation to know why I am unsuccessful or unproductive and how to fix that, and metacognition to accurately figure out how I need to respond to everything. I plan to start using the writing center more often for my assignments and just to help myself study grammar and writing skills in general. I also plan to start using word walls to decode what an assignment is asking of me. I am also making sure I stick to setting aside times and days devoted to school work and studying so that I can eliminate distractions and successfully focus on school
When I went to the understanding learning styles workshop, I found out my learning style is to listen and talk about the lectures therefore I am a auditory. Furthermore I found out that I'm also good at reading about the lecture notes thus I am a visual reading learner too. As the result of the workshop, I studied with other fellow classmate and discussed about notes and the question therefore I achieved a better score on that class. The time management workshop, helped me to priorities my school works and I also learned how to set up weekly plan. This workshop class helped me to plan this course so I can hand in my assignments on time. And the note taking workshop helped me to know that reviewing my notes the day after the class helps me to remember most of the material that was taught in class.
