I excelled academically in high school. I was diligent about setting proper study habits for each class in order to handle my rigorous extracurriculars and my school work. The workload intensified throughout my time at UHS with my addition of more AP and Honors level courses; however, I learned time management skills, work ethic, and how to make better student-teacher connections to ensure that I always preformed to the best of my ability during the school year and beyond. Reflecting on my high school classes, I am confident that I put in my best efforts to ensure success. B. Each year of high school was better than the last in my extra-curricular element. I entered high school focused on theatre, with band and music on the side; however,
each year I became more involved in band. Due to my workload I had to choose between the two, so I chose band. In this way, I feel that high school helped me to further develop who I am. I also learned valuable social and leadership skills via numerous opportunities such as going on L.I.N.K., maintaining employment at a local restaurant, and teaching a class at a local camp. More specific events, like drumline championships, gave me a greater purpose as part of a well bonded team. In school with peers as well as outside of school in the workforce and in leadership positions I have learned how to make lasting professional and social relationships with both my peers and adults in the past four years. 2. Do you think your transcript is an accurate reflection of your ability? What factors, if any, contributed to your performance positively or negatively? Throughout each school year I have had after-school activities until 9pm at least three days a week. Because of this, I was often up late studying and completing assignments. Despite these potential setbacks, I feel like my transcript accurately depicts my intelligence and work ethic. Not only do I perform best under these pressures, I have also learned efficient study habits and time management skills in order to maximize my success inside and out of class. Furthermore, I formed excellent relationships with my teachers in order to seek help and advice outside of class to boost suffering grades. 3. Have there been any events, circumstances or experiences that have had a major impact on your way of thinking? The natural gain and loss of friendships and relationships throughout high school has taught me how to be respectful and understanding of those around me in order to develop lasting bonds with individuals and groups. 4. What is your strongest subject or elective and why? My strongest subject is history. Learning about the historical bedrock of the world that shapes our present way of life fascinates me. Specifically, I enjoy learning about world cultures because I feel that they can give me a greater appreciation for the world around me that I don't see in my daily life. I feel that we can learn the most about how to succeed in the future by examining events of the past, which is ominous and intriguing. What’s more, I excel at reading quickly and retaining specific information which is critical to excelling in social studies courses. 5. What are your most significant contributions to UHS? How will UHS be different because of you? My most significant contribution to UHS has been my dedication to my classes as well as to the music program. In school I set an example for those around me by mindfully participating in class on a regular basis and by always completing my work above the expectation by adding flares of creativity. Moreover, I consistently arrive at band practices thirty minutes early to practice and prepare to work as hard so that I can elevate my team to a higher standard in competition. This dedication instills future pride and passion for the organization. I hope that my dedication to school will help others feel more comfortable speaking out and expressing themselves in whichever medium interests them the way that I do with academics and music.
Growing up, my parents never expected perfection but expected that I try to accomplish my best. The effort I’ve put forth in learning has been reflected in my grades throughout my high school career. I’ve entered myself in vigorous course work such as AP Government and AP English to become well prepared for my college career, all while maintaining a 4.4 grade point average this year. Not only do I engage in AP classes, but up until this year I had no study halls. I wanted my day to be packed full of interesting classes that I would enjoy learning about. My grades and choice of classes prove the effort that I put forth in my learning. Working hard now can only pay off in the future. Learning now creates a well-rounded human being. Working to learn is why I am so dedicated to my studies now.
During my early education, meaning elementary school and middle school, I was a very average student. I gave an average amount of effort to my grades, and I received above average results. This did not bother me, until the end of my 8th-grade year. At this point in the year, I was filling out what classes I desired to take the following year, my freshman year. I realized that from this point forward, I had to take my education much more serious, in order to get accepted to whichever college I desired. therefore, when planning my classes, I decided to challenge myself more than I ever have in the past, and take multiple honors courses. I assumed because of my grades, that I had what it took to be an honors-level student, but I was very wrong. One teacher, Mrs. Johnson, made me realize the kind of effort, time and energy needed to be devoted to my education.
During my years in high school, I have learned many valuable lessons. I’m proud of the person I am becoming. Life has not been easy, but thankfully I’m a strong hard worker. I started high school with a high GPA, and never intended for it to drop throughout my years. Within the last three years, I’ve moved around, participated in sports, and got a job.
In today’s advancing society, knowledge has become an essential aspect to achieve a successful lifestyle. It is important that one demonstrates scholarship from the early ages to attain knowledge and understanding for the future. High school, along with college are two major stepping stones in a person’s life. Many individuals are able to make the transitions from high school to college pretty easily, while there are others that find the transition into college to be somewhat challenging and hard to adjust to. When I think about what counts as learning to me, I think about my life. Just being able to live in this world to me is a learning experience, because I feel that my life is full of lessons and I believe that it takes lessons to learn in life. I feel that I have learned to understand learning more and to also understand the value of learning. As I get older I can comprehend subject matters more than I could ever do before. I am learning to be more serious and I find myself not taking life for granted anymore.
1. I encountered the most significant challenge when I moved to Canada in January, 2012. Before I came to Canada, my English grade was very good in China, thus, I thought living and studying in Canada would not be too difficult. However, I did not do well in the ESL evaluation at all, and I was placed in ESL 1 at my high school. Most of my classmates there spoke very little English, and they did not spend much time and effort on studying English. It was very difficult for me to study if I wanted to be their friends and at that time, they were the only friends I had in Canada. However, I expected much more effort from myself. I studied very hard and became the 2nd fastest ESL students ever to complete ESL 1 to 4 in my high school. Today, when I recall what I have accomplished, I think I learnt to trust myself and at the same, success in anything only comes from hard work.
Since a young age I became to realize that playing the school game would get me to achieve one of my biggest goals which is to attend a four year college. The academic journey from my childhood up to my ongoing college experience was an important role in defining who I am as an individual. Like any other person, I eventually gained the understanding and importance of essential qualities like time management, work ethic, developing strong mental mindset, and many other things throughout my years of education. Fortunately for me, I became aware of these things much earlier than my peers around me. However, being aware of these things was only a fraction towards success. Over time I’ve realized that the most critical part of success was gaining the discipline and willpower to apply these lessons and concepts.
Having spent twelve years of my school life in just one small red brick building, the years tend to fade into each other. But the year I remember most clearly and significantly is my senior year of high school, where I finally began to appreciate what this institution offered to any student who stopped to look. Before, school had been a chore, many times I simply did not feel motivated toward a subject enough to do the homework well, and seeing the same familiar faces around ever since I was 5 years old grew very tiring soon enough.
