Recommended: The art of writing
I learned how to write the same way everyone learns how to write; drawing simple letters on large, lined paper in Kindergarten and forming short sentences. The style and techniques are the important elements of writing, and it takes years to develop in school. I learned the foundations of writing in elementary and middle school, and eventually built up a better understanding of writing in high school. My earliest memory of learning how to write begins in Kindergarten, when I was taught the pronunciation and shape of each letter of the alphabet. Even though it is an easy task, mastering how to write singular letters was crucial for the rest of my academic career. The wide ruled paper made it easy to master the shape of each letter, and soon …show more content…
Lippincott who taught us about relating writing to books and theme. Now that I was older, I had a broader vocabulary and I could put my thoughts on paper in a way that was understandable. My teacher taught me how to write a structured essay with an opening paragraph, body paragraphs, and a closing paragraph. It was an easy structure to remember since it followed the same pattern I was taught in elementary school. However, it wasn’t until I entered high school that I really began learning how to write a formal essay. My freshman English teacher, Carynne Burnett, taught me so many important elements of writing essays. I also had her a second time as a teacher, during my senior year of high school. Burnett taught me about thesis statements, implementing quotes, opening and closing an essay, MLA format, and other important elements of writing. She always gave very detailed and specific instructions to help me achieve the best possible results. Most of the time I felt as if I learned nothing, and thought that I probably repeated the same mistakes in paper after paper. However, when I went back to read a paper I wrote during freshman year I realized that my writing had vastly improved compared to my writing in senior year. It showed that I progressed in leaps and bounds throughout high school, even if I didn’t realize
In the past three months I feel like I have accomplished a great deal. As the semester comes to an end I find myself reflecting not only how I have survived the first semester but also what I have learned. The most important thing I have learned so far is how to become a better writer. I did not think it could really happen to me. I did not think I could handle all the work. I did not think I could actually become a better writer. Some how after all the hours of writing, and putting effort into the papers that I wrote this semester, I became a better writer. I did this because I concentrated on two very important areas, with the attitude of, if I could just become better in those then I would become a better writer. With help from an awesome teacher and a reliable tutor I have become a better writer by improving my skills in the areas of procrastination and content.
I came into this class under the impression that I already wrote well enough and wouldn’t need to improve. However, as I progressed through the semester I learned that there is always room to grow. The first paper I produced was not at the level I was hoping but after I actively decided to improve my writing my papers became much better. Looking back on my work in the class I wonder how much my writing has changed and where I still have room to improve. Without evaluating my work I can’t hope to become any better. Through this class I have grown much as a writer but there is still more I can learn.
Over the course of this class I feel like I have become a much better writer. When I go back and look at some of my Journal entries and assignments that I did at the beginning of the semester, I can’t help but tense up at some of the things I wrote. Sometimes the things I was writing didn’t flow well, or I might have even have missed glaring grammar mistakes.
I have always known that writing was not my strong point. Entering writing 101 in September I was very much afraid. I knew that the expectations would be very high for this course; thus it would be more difficult than any other writing class I had previously taken. At first writing was a nightmare for me, but thanks to the assistance from professor Smart and my tutors, I have improved drastically in my writing skills and, as a result I am now a better writer. During the course of four months, I have learned so much. There were a few bumps in the way throughout the semester, but I managed to overcome them. It is hard to believe that my journey in writing 101 is coming to an end. Through my hard work and dedication, this class has helped me to build confidence in my writing that will help me throughout my college life.
Throughout this semester I have learned many ways of writing through two main essays literacy narrative and comparison and contrast. These two essays have taught me how to correctly fix my comma splices, thesis statements, and capitalization. I have engaged in numerous learning material during this summer class. Many times when I thought it would be hard to work on those three developments I never gave up. I gain more positive feedback from my teacher because he pointed out most of my mistakes I made on both literacy narrative and comparison and contrast essays to help me understand what is it that I need to work on. My development as a writer became stronger.
Over the course of this semester I learned a lot about myself as a writer. This English 101 class has really allowed me to expand my essay structure and ways of thinking. This was my first college writing course and it has given me much more freedom when writing because in high school I felt limited and like what we were writing was not very important. In high school I would write essays to just to fulfill the required word or page count and to a degree I still feel like this but maybe that is why I am an engineering major but in this course I actually was able to express my ideas and for the first time really test the limits of my writing capabilities. I really enjoyed being able to incorporate my voice more in my essays and I believe that I developed my own personal style a bit from this. At the beginning of the semester my writing was quite choppy and there was plenty of room for improvement in the overall flow of my essays. Now, I use several different tactics such as outlining to create better connections between paragraphs. I believe I was able to move beyond many of the high school ways of writing and make general improvements to my essays.
I have learned many things throughout the course of the term, including such things as: how to write an essay and how to improve on essays that I have already written, how to locate and composite better research through the use of numerous resources found at the campus library, the internet, and the “Common Sense” textbook, how to cite research, examples, and quotations properly within the contents of my research paper as well as document it accurately according to MLA standards. Through the exploration of the “Subjects and Strategies” textbook, I have learned nine different methods used when writing an effective essay and how the different writing styles affect the overall theme and tone of the essay when used properly. This past semester, I have encountered many difficulties when trying to write these essays, but through the use of the textbooks, the aide of the instructor, and once I was able to classify the different types of essays and styles, I found them possible to overcome.
All in all cursive can help lead to higher test scores and can be beneficial due to the amount of writing is involved on major tests besides this cursive can also help brain function which ultimately can aid higher test
Over the course of the semester, I feel that I have grown as a writer in many ways. When I came into the class, there were skills I had that I already excelled at. During my time in class, I have come to improve on those skills even more. Before I took this class I didn’t even realise what I was good at. This is the first class where I felt I received feedback on my writing that helped me to actually review my work in see what areas I lacked in and where I succeeded. Some of the skills I had shocked me as I didn’t think I had those capabilities in me.
I would have to say that going to my professor was the biggest help when writing essays because I receive better information from her than all the other sources, I have used. She made me a better writer in many
Yet, in reality I would just go on, and on, and never seemed to end. I was careless when it came to my grammar, and ignored all rules of English. Thinking back on it now I realize that I was an amateur writer, and none of my English teachers ever told me. Going into high school, I didn’t have much experience still with my writing, and this is where I noticed that the only reason I was so exceptional at reading and writing in Junior High School, was only because it was at a lower level. Once I started attending high school I understood that it was a different ball game, and it showed.
extremely motivational third grade teacher encouraged my writing in ways that all teachers should note.
As I look back on my schooling I can’t believe how many papers I’ve written throughout my life. Naturally as I’ve grown up, my writing has developed from learning how to write sentences all the way up to the pages of essays that consist of deeper criteria. I know for a fact that I’m a better writer now than I was before. College writing is more challenging and I’ve had to learn how to adjust to it.
I keep an archive of school work from past semesters of college and even high school. So I opened it up and looked through a few essays I had senior year at my high school. It quickly became apparent to me that although my writing style was consistent and slowly got better over those years, I still made some of the same mistakes in paper after paper. I tended to just throw out the idea I had in my head at the time onto the page. Yes I did manage to transcribe my meaning from my head to the text, but more often then not you couldn 't tell because It was buried under mountains of unnecessary text and formatted
The first lesson I learned, are from the essay professor Mahoney let us read in the class called the “Silk parachute.” Professor Mahoney taught me the structures and how to use the concrete details to make my ideas be clear and supported. For example, in my descripted essay describing my mother, I learn to use the concrete details to avoiding generalities so that a reader can have a better visualiztion in my descripted essay such as, instead of saying "My mother is a nice and strong woman," I can say, " My mother who brought me up with her whole kindly heart and she is the kind of persistent woman with strong willpower who had to face the toughest challenges in life." This concrete detail creates a vivid image in the reader's mind to help increase interest in the essay.
