What happened to Monday?... More like what happened to society? Everyone loves a dramatic, dystopian thriller to watch on a Friday night, but Tommy Wirkola (director) will have you on the edge of your couch yearning for more. The movie opens with a suspenseful intro to the lifestyle of Karen Settman (played by Noomi Rapace) but then quickly jumps back in time to showcase how the septuplets were raised into becoming Ms. Settman. Now you’re probably thinking, did I read that right, septuplets? Unlike the basic plotline found in recent dystopian movies such as The Hunger Games and Divergent, What Happened to Monday (W.H.T.M.) features an original plot based on how seven grandchildren survive in a one child-one family world. Wirkola deserves major …show more content…
props for his film because the plot is unique and enticing, the directing is original, his choice of actors are exceptional and finally, the overall theme teaches the audience how strong a sister bond really is. The Netflix original sci-fi film takes place in America’s distant future where overpopulation and famine have struck the people.
A one-child policy has been put in place by the dictator-like ruler, Nicolette Caymen (played by Glenn Close). Unfortunately the Settman septuplet sisters were born into this society and were forced to live in hiding, for fear of the Child Allocation Bureau (C.A.B.). The C.A.B. would take siblings from families and discreetly dispose of them, telling the public that they are carbon-freezing them until the world’s carrying capacity increases but actually kills them. The Settman sisters were named after the days of the week and their childhood consisted of their grandfather teaching them how to secretly be a part of society, learning that all possible ramifications have consequences. Each sister must look exactly the same as the other in order for the plot to work; so if one of the siblings gets hurt, they all get hurt… The Settmans believe they have the system cracked until one day Monday goes missing so the rest of the bunch have to figure what happened to her, ultimately leading them to the Child Allocation Bureau and discovering the truth behind their ruler’s so-called “Plan for the Future.” W.H.T.M. puts a twist on future survival and focuses on how strong a family bond really is rather than run-of-the-mill couple drama found in The Hunger Games and
Divergent. However, this is not family movie night material. In order to have a successful thriller movie, there must be some type of violent scene to keep the audience on edge and Wirkola definitely delivered. From scenes of using a Settman sister’s unattached eyeball to multiple fight/murder scenes, What Happened to Monday doesn’t shy away from the violence. These gory scenes are what every successful thriller needs. This film perfectly displays how negative repercussions can affect the sisters’ lives; for example, one of the sisters lost her finger in a skateboarding accident as a child so as a consequence, all seven of the Settman’s also had to lose their finger… This scene shows the grandfather cutting off all of his grandchildren’s fingers in the kitchen, further instilling in the girls how severe their situation really is. When it comes to directing violent and suspenseful scenes, Tommy Wirkola is the man for the job. From directing the popular Dead Snow Series to the failed production of Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters, Wirkola is experienced in gory drama. In an interview with The Verge, he talked about how the movie was supposed to be originally filmed. For example, Wirkola wanted a female lead instead of a male one because females aren’t usually seen being brutally attacked, so he wanted this reality to sink in his audience. His directing style wants the audience to constantly question the plot, “Who’s going to survive?,” “What are the sister’s truly like beyond the surface?,” “What’s the motive behind these actions?.” Wirkola sets up W.H.T.M. so each scene reveals a new subplot and the storyline never repeats itself. Spoiler Alert! If you have not already seen What Happened to Monday, please skip this paragraph. However, one example of a major plot-twist includes one of the Settman sisters (Monday) having an affair with a government officer, which doesn’t get revealed until Monday is kidnapped from the Bureau. Then later in the movie, it’s revealed to the audience that Monday was pregnant all along with twins from the officer. Wirkola sets up each event to further tie the underlying plot and keep everyone on their toes with anticipation. As each subplot was directed and the Settman sisters faced a new challenge, Noomi Rapace took on the challenge to act as seven sisters with very different personalities. In her previous movies, none of her roles were as demanding as W.H.T.M. but her incredible acting skills gained all of her movies an average of 7/10 rating. Each Settman sister has distinctive traits that define their differences and Rapace does an exceptional job at making you believe that she actually has six more sisters in real life. From tactical combat to emotionally draining scenes, Rapace does it all. In one scene, sisters Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday are ambushed by the C.A.B. in their apartment and in order to survive, they have to kill off all four of the government officers. Each Settman sister displays different ways to defend themselves, either by choking (seen above with Saturday (Noomi Rapace)) or kickboxing, Wednesday’s trained in the art. Noomi Rapace has played multiple horror characters before, such as The Millennium Series, Prometheus, Alien etc…, but never seven different roles all in one movie. So all in all, What Happened to Monday is a definite must see. There are some stale scenes in the movie that drag on, such as the dinner table conversations and the beginning scenes of the Settman sisters. However the underlying drama and action scenes quickly make you forget and another subplot is unveiled with more important information.

The story follows three girls- Jeanette, the oldest in the pack, Claudette, the narrator and middle child, and the youngest, Mirabella- as they go through the various stages of becoming civilized people. Each girl is an example of the different reactions to being placed in an unfamiliar environment and retrained. Jeanette adapts quickly, becoming the first in the pack to assimilate to the new way of life. She accepts her education and rejects her previous life with few relapses. Claudette understands the education being presented to her but resists adapting fully, her hatred turning into apathy as she quietly accepts her fate. Mirabella either does not comprehend her education, or fully ignores it, as she continually breaks the rules and boundaries set around her, eventually resulting in her removal from the school.
Satire is form of comedy in which flaws in people or society are chastised in order to prompt change in the objects of criticism. Regardless of how long ago comedy itself may have existed, the concept of satire was introduced by the Roman satirists, Juvenal and Horace. The tones conveyed in their writing characterize the main modes of satire, being Horatian and Juvenalian, and are still used in satire today. Presently, two popular forms of comedy that employ satirical elements include parody news sources and comedic performances. Although satirical writing has evolved throughout history, many aspects of satire are still apparent in both the articles of parody news sources, like The Onion, and the performances of professional comedians, like

Throughout all of the discussions, each sister gives advice and support to deal with the issues most of which were caused by living on or being from the rez. This part of the road trip was influenced by Nanabush’s attack on Marie-Adele and became important
