Recently, a six-year-old by the name of Jeremy Mardis died. Though he didn’t just die of “natural causes”, he was shot and killed. By police officers. The shooting took place in Marksville, Louisiana, a small town with the population of only about 5,500, on a Tuesday night. Many are debating against this and trying to figure out why they did this and what happened to make them to this act of crime.
We all know police officers are armed almost all the time and now days are very jumpy given so many people have just been committing crime after crime. If you even move, a police officer might pull a gun out just because he might think you are going to open fire. Though no one knows why these two police officers did this. Norris Greenhouse (age 23)

Jeremy was sitting by his father in the passenger seat when it occurred. He received five bullets in the chest and head and his father received some as well though lived through it but is in critical condition at a nearby hospital.
These two cops were the local deputy marshals, according to USA Today. Details of why the shooting took place are unknown. Chris Few, the father, had no tremendous police record, there was no apparent reason they shot at them.
CNN reported the news that both of the police officers were arrested and have been charged with 2nd degree murder and attempted 2nd degree murder. In a court hearing Monday, November 9th, a Louisiana judge set a $1 million bond for both of the officers. The court has ordered both of them to surrender their badges and firearms.
“If they were going for somebody then those people most likely gave them a reason to do it. His father probably did do something. I feel like they should go to jail but not that long. They were just doing their job! My dad’s a cop so I know kind of how it is. They are trying!” Kate Ledbetter told us. People like Kate agree with not punishing them for a long time though most people argue on
Facts: On October 3, 1974, Memphis Police Officers Hymon and Wright were dispatched to answer a “prowler inside call.” When the police arrived at the scene, a neighbor gestured to the house where she had heard glass breaking and that someone was breaking into the house. While one of the officer radioed that they were on the scene, the other officer went to the rear of the house hearing a door slam and saw someone run across the backyard. The suspect, Edward Garner stopped at a 6-feet-high fence at the edge of the yard and proceeded to climb the fence as the police officer called out “police, halt.” The police officer figured that if Garner made it over the fence he would get away and also “figured” that Garner was unarmed. Officer Hymon then shot him, hitting him in the back of the head. In using deadly force to prevent the escape of Garner, Hymon used the argument that actions were made under the authority of the Tennessee statute and pursuant to Police Department policy. Although the department’s policy was slightly more restrictive than the statute it still allowed the use of deadly force in cases of burglary. Garner’s fathers’ argument was made that his son was shot unconstitutionally because he was captured and shot possessing ten dollars that he had stolen and being unarmed showing no threat of danger to the officer. The incident was then reviewed by the Memphis Police Firearm’s Revie...
On October 22, 2013, Andy Lopez, a young teenager at the age of thirteen years old, was shot and killed by a Sonoma County deputy named Erik Gelhaus. The community has taken sides either criticizing the officers actions, or supporting them. Whether the arguments are based on race or police abuse of power, we can clearly see step by step why officer Gelhaus did what he did from the first time he spotted Lopez, when he fired the shots, and by what actions he took after the fatal shootings. When looking at the circumstance as a whole, one can understand that Gelhaus's actions were justified and was done only to protect the community.
On October 20, 2014 a young male teen was fatally shot in Chicago, Illinois. The shooting occurred in the middle of the road and the suspect that was fatally shot was named Laquan McDonald. McDonald was just 17 years old and was the suspect after initial reports placed him in the scene of a possible car jacking. It was reported that Laquan McDonald had a knife and was also seen slashing tires of a police cruiser. When police had finally had him surrounded in the middle of the road, one officer opened fire and released 16 shots into his body. Another deputy on hand said the use of force was not needed because Laquan was not in any way trying to attack the officers present. The officer who fired the 16 shots into Laquan is named Jason D. Conspiracy is defined as “An agreement between two or more people to commit an illegal act, along with an intent to achieve the agreement 's goal.” (Legal Information Institute, n.d) The three police officers worked together and planned the crime together. No one individual did more than the other and they needed each other’s help to pull the crime off. Individuals sometimes have a hard time trusting law enforcement for reasons someone may or may not understand. However, it is officers like mentioned in the case study who ruin the department’s reputation. Each one of these officers acted in the same demeanor with the same intentions. That could easily give the impression that they Kansas City Police Department is corrupt and untrustworthy. Not only was their decision affecting the case they were handling, but their jobs and the reputation of the department. Each officer involved easily could have made the decision to not partake in the crime. However, they all agreed steal and intimidate the
...is novel with an outstanding salute to those who serve in law enforcement saying, “And so I tip my hat to all the good cops throughout our nation who risk their lives and strive to do the right thing when facing split-second decisions about life and death every day in the kill zone” (Klinger, 2004, page 274). Pulling the trigger of a gun can cause a variety of issues both within and outside of a police officer’s life, but it could also potentially save another human being from harm and keep the safety of our society intact.
All were full times students at Kent State University. Kahler is permanently paralyzed from the shooting. These shootings caused many students to want to attack the members of the National Guard. Seeing this, members of the Kent State faculty pleaded with the students to disperse to prevent further bloodshed.
Police officers that racially profile, and kill innocent people based off of stereotyping and hate, should be held accountable for their actions. The police officer that shot and killed Oscar Grant did a total of 11 months in jail. He did less than a year. Oscar Grant’s family and loved ones grieved longer than the time that police officer did. It is not fair that people in a high position are treated differently. That police officer did not go to jail for a long time for the fact that he was a white police officer. The police officer said that he meant to pull out a Taser gun instead of the actual gun. That was when he was charged with involuntary manslaughter. Regardless if it was an accident or not, which it wasn’t, 11 months is not enough time for taking an innocent life. I believe people in higher and important positions should be held accountable even more than a regular citizen. This is because they are trained, and they have our lives in their hands. So when they abuse their power that should not be taken
The report included testimony from Officer Darren Wilson, physical evidence, forensic evidence, and many witnesses. According to the Department of Justice report on the incident, Officer Darren Wilson was driving after finishing one of his calls and saw Michael Brown and his friend walking on the double yellow line in the middle of the street blocking traffic. According to his account, officer Wilson told them to move to the sidewalk in which they ignored. He then noticed they fit the descriptions he had earlier heard of the suspects of the robbery, he then parked his vehicle blocking traffic. He attempted to get out of his vehicle to speak to the boys but apparently Michael Brown blocked the car door and started to punch the officer. They engaged in a scuffle where Officer Wilson reached for his gun in which he claims that all he had access to. Michael Brown tried to take control of the gun, according to Wilson’s account. (Department of Justice, 2015) Officer Wilson then regained control of the gun and shot Michael Brown’s hand. Michael Brown then took off and Wilson chased him on foot. Brown started coming towards Wilson. Many witnesses even described Brown as “charging” towards Wilson. (McLaughlin, E. C. (2014, August 15) Wilson warned Brown multiple times and Brown kept moving forward towards Wilson
A father purchased a toy gun as a birthday gift for his young son. His son went outside to play and and encountered a police officer who shot him seven times. This incident occurred in Sonoma County in October 2013. A similar incident occurred in November 2014 when Cleveland police killed a 12-year-old boy carrying a toy gun. Use of excessive force by police is common in impoverished "black" or "brown" communities.
...gainst New York cops since 1993, only 180 officers have been disciplined, most of them with just a lecture or the loss of a vacation day" (26). Officers need to be treated like citizens when it comes to that type of crime. They should be sent to jail and just saying sorry should not let them off the hook. They may be law officers, but they are not gods and they should have to face the consequences of their actions as all good citizens must.
Either a Police Officer has been shot or a Police Officer has shot a citizen, but either way the final result is death. Whether an Officer has been shot or an Officer has shot someone these cases seem to be related to one thing, fear. People in today’s society feel as though they can’t trust Police Officers as they are there to hurt and kill them. And Police Officers feel as though they are in danger of doing their everyday duties because people see them as the “bad guys” and want to hurt or
Most criminals are deterred to do crime when they realize someone is armed. No one smart, willingly wants to put themselves in a position to be shot. Wayne quoted “39 percent did not commit specific crime for the fear that the victim was armed.” A natural fear lies with the human being, he will take precautions to make sure he is safe. When the citizen is armed and one can see that. It is a deterrent for the criminal to pursue that being. Conceal carry is on the rise, now criminals must be extra cautious of their target, for it may lead to their demise. An argument from the opposite side on the matter is that the conceal carry community is a threat to law enforcement, however 57 percent of non-law abiding citizens have a worse fear of being stopped by the averaged armed citizen then by the police force. The people are not bounded to as much regulation as an officer. The only variable for a citizen’s permission to shoot is, is his life is in danger or someone else’s life is in danger, or if property is being taken or invaded. Police have more regulation for their reasons to shoot a
In the video, the man is seen stepping out of his car as the officer told him to do, but when the officer tells the man to get his license and he reaches into the car to grab it, he is shot. The officer is heard telling the man to “put his hands up and get out of the car.” When the man was shot, he had his hands in the air, with his wallet in hand. While the officer had the right to defend himself against a potential threat, it was extremely unnecessary to shoot at the man. Thankfully, the man was not killed in the shooting, but the man’s lawyer stated that his client was not unhandcuffed until an officer remembered that he did not have his handcuffs and went to the hospital to retrieve them.

Early Thursday morning, on October 22, 2015 about 8:17 a.m. Savannah Chatham Metropolitan Police Department responded to reports of a front door open in the 800 block of Lynah Street. While police officers was checking the residence they found Kiana Marshall (21), Alexis Kitchens (19), and Isaiah Martin (18), deceased, with gunshot wounds inside the home. Many neighbors said that they heard gunshots around 12:30 a.m. or 1 a.m. but was uncertain on where exactly the gunshots came from. Gun violence in the United States is a major issue, especially for the African American community. Americans should always care about gun violence in the United States and not wait until someone we know gets shot and killed. As Americans we think we shouldn’t
