Willy Loman is a hard working American who is trying to achieve the classic American dream. However, Willy’s criteria to becoming successful are somewhat skewed. Willy believes that business is a very personal job. One of Willy’s keys to success is personality and how having a fun, kind personality will get more business. Along with personality, comes making friends and connections in business. Mr. Loman also believes that making personal connections to customers is important to business. Willy says he gets lonely “especially when business is bad and there’s nobody to talk to” (P.38) and this compares his belief of making connections and success or lack thereof. In Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman we see the negative effect of having an absent parent. The main character Willy Loman is a salesman who constantly struggles with trying to be what he considers “successful,” and “well liked.” He has two sons Biff and Happy and is married to Linda. Willy also struggles between illusion and reality; he has trouble defining and distinguishing the past from the present. Between his financial struggles and not feeling like he accomplished anything, he commits suicide. Throughout Willy’s life he was constantly abandoned, by both his father and his brother at very young age. Since Willy has no reference to look up to, he is somewhat left to figure things out on his own. In Willy’s mind, everything he teaches his children is perfectly ok. Willy’s moral flaws and constant idealization of the “American dream,” ultimately stem from his absent father.
Willy Loman had always been a confident man for succeeding in his career. The business man, Mr. Loman, was so confident, that he explained to his sons that "they know me up and down New England," trying to prove his prevalence in the business world (Miller 1223). He had convinced himself of these lies that he had told his family for years and years. He could never admit that he was not a good salesman. Through the course of this play we get an inside look at the mind of Willy Loman, a salesman from Brooklyn, New York. Willy has worked for almost everything he has, and maintains most of his property by himself. Although, his narcissism exhibits the common issue with American capitalism-it leads to greediness, unhappiness, and anger. He says that to get somewhere, it is good to be “built like (an) Adonis,” which he tells his sons. Looking back on the free enterprise system, many prospective American business owners would have been successful if it were not for the lack of willpower they had; a primary result of the misleading success stories that American society readily displayed. These success stories misrepresented the true means through which success in the free enterprise economy is obtained: determination and grit. Had past ‘failed’ businessmen realized that “putting your back into it” possessed the true secret to obtaining their dreams, families may have thrived rather than fallen. While this exact process haunted Willy Loman, a fictional character, he serves as a greater symbol for all men who weren't successful in the free enterprise economy. Willy saw Dave Singleman to be a great salesman and an embodiment of the American dream, because Dave was wealthy and many people liked him and therefore he could sell things over the phone. Then Willy decided “that selling was the greatest career a man could want.”[pg.63]. The word ‘greatest’ suggests that Willy regards selling as the best and most important career a person could strive for.
Willy Loman equates success as a human being with success in the business world. When Willy was a young man, he heard of a salesman who could "pick up his phone and call the buyers, and without ever leaving his room, at the age of eighty-four, make his living." (81) This salesman is Willy's inspiration; someday to be so respected and so well known that he can still provide for his family, even at an old age. Of course, Willy is no good at being a salesman because his heart isn't in it. The only time Willy puts his heart into anything is when he works with his hands, and his son, Biff, comes to realize this. "There's more of him in that front stoop than in all the sales he ever made." Willy Loman’s tragic flow leads him to purse the idea that reputation in society has more relevancies in life than knowledge and education to survive in the business. His grand error of wanting recognition drove him crazy and insane and lead to his tragic death. Willy’s hubris makes him feel extremely proud of what he has, when in reality he has no satisfaction with anything in his life. Willy Loman’s sons did not reach his expectations, as a father but he still continued to brag about Biff and Happy in front of Bernard. Willy Loman caused the reader to empathize with him because before his tragic death he did everything he could for his family. Empathy, Hubris , and Willy Loman’s tragic flow all lead him to his death that distend for him the beginning.
In brief, it is apparent that Willy’s own actions led to not only his own demise, but his children’s as well. The salesman tragically misinterpreted the American Dream for only the superficial qualities of beauty, likeability and prosperity. Perhaps if Willy had been more focused on the truth of a person’s character, rather than purely physical aspects, his family’s struggles and his own suicide could have been avoided. On the whole, Arthur Miller’s play is evidence that the search for any dream or goal is not as easy and the end result may seem. The only way to realize the objective without any despair is the opposite of Willy Loman’s methods: genuineness, perseverance and humility.
Loman, a salesman, travels often. Never home, he is incapable of being a good father to his sons, and a loving husband to his wife. In the post-WWII era, ideally, the father was the family breadwinner, and the mother stayed home to care for the children. Although Willy has held the position of a salesman for a long time, he isn’t necessarily successful at it; the case is actually quite the opposite. A poor businessman, he is left unable to provide for his family, which leads him to borrow money from his neighbor Charley in order to help pay off the mortgage on his house. His incapacity to fulfill these essential roles leaves him lacking gratification and floundering for a perception of worth.
Willy Loman is a firm believer in the "American Dream:" the notion that any man can rise from humble beginnings to greatness. His particular slant on this ideal is that a man succeeds by selling his charisma, that to be well liked is the most important asset a man can have. He made a living at this for 30 years, but as he enters the reclining years of his life, people have stopped smiling back and he can no longer sell the firm's goods to support himself. His ambition was one of greatness, to work hard and to be a member of the firm; and if he could not succeed in this respect, that he should at least be well-liked and be able to sell until the day of his death: When his friends would flock from all over the country to pay their respects.
